1 Ο Ιώβ απάντησε:

2 Αχ, να μπορούσε η οδύνη μου να ζυγιστεί

κι όλες μου οι συμφορές μαζί

στη ζυγαριά να μπούνε!

3 Θα ’τανε πιο βαριές κι από της θάλασσας την άμμο·

γι’ αυτό κι είναι τα λόγια μου απερίσκεπτα.

4 Του Παντοδύναμου τα βέλη υπάρχουν μέσα μου

και το φαρμάκι τους

έχει το πνεύμα μου ταράξει·

οι τρόμοι με περικυκλώνουν του Θεού.

5 Γαϊδούρι δεν φωνάζει

που ’χει τη χλόη δίπλα του

ούτε μουγκρίζει ταύρος

πλάι στο ξερό χορτάρι του.

6 Αλλά πώς το άνοστο κι’ ανάλατο φαΐ

να φαγωθεί;

Και σαν ποια να ’χει νοστιμιά

τ’ ωμό του αυγού τ’ ασπράδι;

7 Καθώς τ’ αηδιαστικά ετούτα φαγητά,

έτσι είναι και τα βάσανά μου αφόρητα.

8 Ας ήταν να ’χε η προσευχή μου απόκριση,

να μου ’δινε ο Θεός αυτό που του γυρεύω:

9 Αν αποφάσιζε οριστικά να μ’ εξοντώσει

το χέρι του ν’ απλώσει

και το νήμα μου να κόψει της ζωής,

10 τότε θα ’χα τουλάχιστον ετούτη την παρηγοριά,

και θα πηδούσα από χαρά μες στα δεινά

που μου ’δωσε να υποφέρω:

Πως δεν αθέτησα ποτέ μου

του Άγιου Θεού τις προσταγές.

11 Ποια δύναμη έχω να μπορεί να με κρατήσει στη ζωή;

Μα και για ποιο σκοπό να ζω,

όταν δεν έχω ελπίδα;

12 Μήπως την αντοχή έχω του βράχου,

ή μήπως από μέταλλο είν’ οι σάρκες μου;

13 Κανένα στήριγμα μέσα μου δεν υπάρχει·

κι έχει μακριά μου φύγει κάθε βοήθεια.

14 Ο απελπισμένος έχει ανάγκη από φίλους σπλαχνικούς,

το σέβας του για να μη χάσει στον Παντοδύναμο.

15 Οι φίλοι μου όμως με ξεγέλασαν

καθώς τ’ απατηλά ποτάμια,

καθώς οι χείμαρροι που η κοίτη τους στεγνώνει

όταν δε βρέχει πια.

16 Όταν οι πάγοι και τα χιόνια λιώνουν την άνοιξη,

ρέματα κατεβάζουν θολωμένα.

17 Μα με τις ζέστες του καλοκαιριού στερεύουνε·

στην πύρα του ήλιου η κοίτη τους μένει στεγνή.

18 Την κοίτη ακολουθώντας των χειμάρρων

τα καραβάνια βγαίνουν απ’ το δρόμο τους

ανοίγονται στην έρημο και χάνονται.

19 Τα καραβάνια απ’ την Ταιμά

για τους χειμάρρους αγναντεύουνε·

οι ταξιδιώτες από τη Σαβά

σ’ αυτούς ελπίζουν.

20 Αλλά απογοητεύονται

κάθε φορά που μάταια φτάνουν ως εκεί.

21 Έτσι είσαστε κι εσείς για μένα τώρα·

τη συμφορά μου την είδατε και φρίξατε.

22 Μήπως σας είπα κάτι να μου δώσετε

ή να δωροδοκήσετε για χάρη μου κανέναν

23 ή να με σώσετε απ’ τα χέρια του εχθρού

ή να μ’ εξαγοράσετε από τα χέρια των τυράννων;

24 Διδάξτε με, λοιπόν, κι εγώ σωπαίνω·

δείξτε μου σε τι έσφαλα.

25 Απ’ τα ειλικρινή σας λόγια

έτοιμος είμαι να πεισθώ!

Μα εσείς μου λέτε κατηγόριες

τέτοιες που δε με πείθουνε,

γιατί δεν είν’ αληθινές.

26 Σκοπεύετε να κατακρίνετε τα λόγια μου;

Μα όσα ο απελπισμένος λέει

είναι του ανέμου λόγια.

27 Εσείς θα φτάνατε να βάλετε στον κλήρο ένα ορφανό,

και να πουλήσετε τον ίδιο σας το φίλο.

28 Κοιτάξτε με κατάματα,

ψέματα δε σας λέω.

29 Πάψτε πια τώρα να με αδικείτε!

Σας ξαναλέω: σταματήστε!

Το δίκιο μου είναι ολοφάνερο!

30 Δεν είναι άδικα αυτά που λέει η γλώσσα μου·

το στόμα μου μιλάει

μόνο για συμφορές.
