1 Τότε αποκρίθηκε ο Ιώβ στον Κύριο:

2 «Ξέρω πως τίποτα για σε δεν είν’ αδύνατο

κι όλα όσα στοχάζεσαι

μπορείς και να τα πράξεις.

3 Ρωτάς ποιος είμαι που τολμώ ν’ αμφισβητώ τα σχέδιά σου,

καθώς για πράγματα μιλώ που δεν καταλαβαίνω.

Αλήθεια, μίλησα για πράγματα που δεν τα καταλάβαινα,

πολύ μεγάλα, θαυμαστά

κι ασύλληπτα για μένα.

4 Μου ζητάς πρώτα να σ’ ακούσω όσο μιλάς

κι ύστερα ν’ απαντήσω εγώ στις ερωτήσεις σου.

5 Τότε σε γνώριζα μονάχα απ’ όσα είχα για σένα ακουστά·

μα τώρα με τα μάτια μου σε είδα.

6 Γι’ αυτό, ανακαλώ τα όσα είπα

και ντρέπομαι γι’ αυτά.

Μέσα στο χώμα και στη στάχτη ταπεινώνομαι».

7 Όταν ο Κύριος έπαψε να μιλάει με τον Ιώβ, είπε στον Ελιφάζ τον Ταιμανίτη: «Θύμωσα πολύ μ’ εσένα και με τους δύο φίλους σου, γιατί δε μιλήσατε σωστά για μένα, όπως ο δούλος μου ο Ιώβ. 8 Τώρα λοιπόν πάρτε εφτά μοσχάρια και εφτά κριάρια και πηγαίνετε να βρείτε το δούλο μου τον Ιώβ και να τα προσφέρετε ολοκαύτωμα για την ενοχή σας. Να προσευχηθεί για σας ο δούλος μου ο Ιώβ κι εγώ θα δεχτώ με ευμένεια την προσευχή του και δε θα σας μεταχειριστώ κατά πώς ταιριάζει στην αφροσύνη σας». 9 Τότε ο Ελιφάζ ο Ταιμανίτης, ο Βιλδάδ ο Σουχίτης και ο Σωχάρ ο Νααμαθίτης έφυγαν καί έκαναν όπως τους είπε ο Κύριος. Και ο Κύριος δέχτηκε με ευμένεια την προσευχή του Ιώβ.

10 Όταν ο Ιώβ προσευχήθηκε για τους φίλους του, ο Κύριος του έδωσε πάλι πλούτη, και μάλιστα διπλάσια απ’ όσα είχε πριν. 11 Τότε τον επισκέφθηκαν όλοι οι αδερφοί του κι οι αδερφές του και όλοι οι παλιοί του γνώριμοι. Καθώς έτρωγαν στο σπίτι του μαζί του, του έδειξαν πως συμμετέχουν στον πόνο του και τον παρηγόρησαν για όλες τις δυστυχίες που του είχε στείλει ο Κύριος. Και ο καθένας τους του χάρισε ένα νόμισμα και ένα χρυσό δαχτυλίδι.

12 Στα χρόνια που ακολούθησαν, ο Κύριος ευλόγησε τον Ιώβ περισσότερο από πριν. Έτσι ο Ιώβ απέκτησε δεκατέσσερις χιλιάδες πρόβατα και έξι χιλιάδες καμήλες, χίλια ζευγάρια βόδια καί χίλια γαϊδούρια. 13 Απέκτησε ακόμα εφτά γιους και τρεις θυγατέρες. 14 Την πρώτη την ονόμασε Ιεμιμά (Περιστέρα), τη δεύτερη Κεσία (Κανελλολούλουδο) και την τρίτη Κέρεν-Αππούχ (Θήκη Καλλυντικών). 15 Σε κανένα μέρος της γης δεν υπήρχαν τόσο ωραίες γυναίκες, σαν τις κόρες του Ιώβ. Ο πατέρας τους τούς έδωσε κληρονομικό μερίδιο όπως και στους αδερφούς τους.

16 Μετά απ’ αυτά τα γεγονότα ο Ιώβ έζησε εκατόν σαράντα χρόνια, και είδε τα παιδιά του και τα παιδιά των παιδιών του, τέσσερις γενιές. 17 Πέθανε μακροήμερος σε βαθιά γεράματα.

1 Then Job answered the LORD, and said, 2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.*42.2 no thought can be…: or, no thought of thine can be hindered 3 Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. 4 Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. 5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. 6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

7 And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath. 8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.*42.8 him: Heb. his face, or, person 9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.*42.9 Job: Heb. the face of Job

10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.*42.10 gave…: Heb. added all that had been to Job unto the double 11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. 12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. 13 He had also seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch. 15 And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. 16 After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations. 17 So Job died, being old and full of days.
