1 Τότε ο Θεός απάντησε στον Ιώβ μέσα από τον ανεμοστρόβιλο:

2 Ποιος είσ’ εσύ,

που τα δικά μου σχέδια αμφισβητείς;

γιατί μιλάς για πράγματα

που δεν καταλαβαίνεις;

3 Σαν άντρας τώρα, ετοιμάσου· εμπρός!

Εγώ θα σε ρωτάω

κι εσύ θα μου αποκρίνεσαι:

4 Πού ήσουν εσύ, όταν εγώ θεμέλιωνα τη γη;

Πες μου το αν το γνωρίζεις.

5 Ξέρεις ποιος όρισε τις διαστάσεις της;

Ποιος τέντωσε σκοινί να τη μετρήσει;

6 Πάνω σε τι στηρίγματα

μπήκαν τα θέμελά της

ή ποιος της τοποθέτησε το γωνιακό λιθάρι;

7 Τότε όλα τ’ άστρα της αυγής

μαζί τραγούδαγαν,

και σκόρπιζαν κραυγές χαράς

όλα τα ουράνια όντα.

8 Ποιος περιόρισε τη θάλασσα με πύλες,

σαν πρόβαλε απ’ τα μητρικά

σπλάχνα της γης μ’ ορμή;

9 Εγώ την έντυσα με σύννεφα

και τη σπαργάνωσα με ομίχλη.

10 Όρια της χάραξα, την κράτησα

πίσω από πύλες κλειδαμπαρωμένες.

11 Της είπα: «Ως εδώ θα ’ρχεσαι·

ούτε γραμμή πιο πέρα!

Εδώ θα σπάζουν τα περήφανά σου κύματα».

12 Μες στη ζωή σου πρόσταξες ποτέ

τη μέρα να φανεί;

ή μήπως είπες στην αυγή

πού να προβάλει;

13 να πιάσει από τις άκρες της τη γη,

να την τινάξει κι οι ασεβείς να σκορπιστούνε;

14 Στο φως της μέρας τα βουνά

κι οι λαγκαδιές προβάλλουν

σαν τις πτυχές μιας φορεσιάς.

15 Αλλά στο φως

των ασεβών τα έργα δεν ευδοκιμούν·

και κάθε χέρι που υψωνόταν βίαιο

θα πέσει συντριμμένο.

16 Μήπως προχώρησες ως τις πηγές της θάλασσας;

ή μήπως εξερεύνησες τα βάθη της αβύσσου;

17 Σου έδειξε ποτέ κανείς τις πύλες του θανάτου;

ήσουν εκεί απ’ όπου ξεκινά σκοτάδι αιώνιο;

18 Ξέρεις αλήθεια ως ποιο σημείο

εκτείνεται η γη;

Απάντησέ μου αν όλ’ αυτά τα ξέρεις.

19 Ξέρεις το δρόμο για να φτάσεις

στην κατοικία του φωτός;

και ξέρεις το σκοτάδι πού φωλιάζει;

20 Μπορείς τα δυο τους

στου δρόμου τους το τέλος να τα πας,

και πάλι πίσω στην κατοικία τους να τα φέρεις;

21 Το ξέρεις, βέβαια,

γιατί ήσουν τότε γεννημένος,

και φτάνουν σ’ αριθμό μεγάλο οι μέρες σου!

22 Μπήκες ποτέ σου εκεί, το χιόνι που σωρεύεται;

είδες ποτέ τον τόπο

που το χαλάζι αποθηκεύεται;

23 Όλα αυτά τα ’χω φυλαγμένα

για της ανάγκης τους καιρούς

για τις μέρες της μάχης και του πολέμου.

24 Ξέρεις το δρόμο για να πας

εκεί που ο ήλιος ανατέλλει,

εκεί απ’ όπου έρχεται ζεστός

ο άνεμος, ο ανατολικός;

25 Ποιος άνοιξε αυλάκια για να πέφτει η μπόρα;

ποιος δρόμο χάραξε στα νέφη που βροντούν;

26 Ποιος προκαλεί βροχή

στην άδεια στέπα,

στην έρημο, που δεν υπάρχουν άνθρωποι;

27 Ποιος τη στεγνή, τη διψασμένη γη ποτίζει,

και κάνει να φυτρώνει το χορτάρι;

28 Έχει η βροχή πατέρα;

ποιος γέννησε τις στάλες της δροσιάς;

29 Από ποιανού τα σπλάχνα βγήκε ο πάγος;

την πάχνη ποιος τη γέννησε;

30 Αυτά κάνουν τα ύδατα

σαν πέτρα να σκληραίνουν

και να παγώνει η επιφάνεια της θάλασσας.

31 Μπορείς όλες μαζί να δέσεις τις Πλειάδες;

να χαλαρώσεις τις χορδές του Ωρίωνα;

32 Μπορείς να κάνεις να φανούν τα Ζώδια στον καιρό τους

και τη Μεγάλη Άρκτο να οδηγήσεις μ’ όλα της τα μικρά;

33 Ξέρεις τους νόμους που κυβερνούν τους ουρανούς;

ή, μπορείς και στη γη

να τους κάνεις να ισχύουν;

34 Αν με κραυγές τα σύννεφα προστάξεις,

θα ρίξουν τάχα τη βροχή τους πάνω σου;

35 Μπορείς τις αστραπές κάτω στη γη να τις εξακοντίσεις;

Αν τις καλέσεις, απαντούν

στις προσταγές σου;

36 Ποιος λέει στην ίβιδα*ίβιδα. Πουλί της Αιγύπτου.

πότε θα πλημμυρίσει ο Νείλος;

Πότε θα ξημερώσει,

ποιος το λέει στον πετεινό;

37 Ποιος είναι αρκετά σοφός

τα νέφη να μετρήσει,

τις στάμνες τ’ ουρανού να γείρει για ν’ αδειάσουν,

38 όταν οι χωματένιοι σβώλοι ενώνονται

και γίνεται η γη σκληρή και συμπαγής;

39 Μήπως βρίσκεις εσύ της λέαινας τη λεία;

Μήπως εσύ χορταίνεις τα λιονταρόπουλα,

40 σαν κρύβονται μες στις σπηλιές τους

κι όταν παραμονεύουν στα λημέρια τους;

41 Του κόρακα, ποιος του ετοιμάζει την τροφή του,

όταν φωνάζουν τα μικρά του στο Θεό

και τριγυρνάνε πεινασμένα;
