1 Ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή: «Κόψε δύο πέτρινες πλάκες σαν τις προηγούμενες, για να γράψω πάνω σ’ αυτές τους λόγους που ήταν σ’ εκείνες που έσπασες. 2 Να είσαι έτοιμος νωρίς αύριο το πρωί ν’ ανεβείς στο όρος Σινά. Θα σταθείς εκεί μπροστά μου, στην κορυφή του βουνού. 3 Κανένας δε θ’ ανεβεί μαζί σου και κανένας δε θα εμφανιστεί πουθενά σ’ όλη την περιοχή του βουνού. Ούτε πρόβατα ούτε βόδια θα βόσκουν στους πρόποδες».

4 Ο Μωυσής λάξεψε δύο πλάκες από πέτρα σαν τις πρώτες και νωρίς το πρωί σηκώθηκε κι ανέβηκε στο όρος Σινά, όπως τον είχε διατάξει ο Κύριος. Πήρε στα χέρια του και τις δυο πλάκες. 5 Ο Κύριος κατέβηκε μέσα σε σύννεφο και στάθηκε κοντά του και είπε το όνομά του: «Κύριος». 6 Έπειτα πέρασε μπροστά από το Μωυσή και φώναξε: «Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος, ο Κύριος ο Θεός. Είμαι γεμάτος καλοσύνη και έλεος, υπομονετικός, πιστός και πρόθυμος να συγχωρήσω. 7 Δίνω τη χάρη μου σε χιλιάδες. Συγχωρώ την ανομία, τα σφάλματα, την αμαρτία. Αλλά και δεν αφήνω τίποτε ατιμώρητο. Η τιμωρία για τις ανομίες των πατέρων πέφτει στα παιδιά τους και στων παιδιών τους τα παιδιά, ως την τρίτη και την τέταρτη γενιά».

8 Τότε ο Μωυσής έπεσε με βιάση στη γη και προσκύνησε. 9 «Αν λοιπόν έχω την εύνοιά σου, Κύριέ μου», του είπε, «τότε σε ικετεύω να έρθεις μαζί μας, γιατί αυτός ο λαός είναι απείθαρχος. Συγχώρησε την ανομία μας και την αμαρτία μας και λογάριασέ μας για λαό σου».

10 Τότε ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή: «Εγώ θα συνάψω διαθήκη μπροστά σ’ ολόκληρο το λαό σου. Θα κάνω θαύματα τέτοια, που όμοια τους δεν έγιναν πουθενά σ’ όλη τη γη, σε κανένα έθνος. Και όλος ο λαός που σε περιβάλλει θα δει τα έργα μου, γιατί θα είναι φοβερά αυτά που εγώ, ο Κύριος, θα κάνω μέσω εσού. 11 Τηρήστε τις εντολές που σήμερα σας δίνω, κι εγώ θα διώξω από μπροστά σας τους Αμορραίους, τους Χαναναίους, τους Χετταίους, τους Φερεζαίους, τους Ευαίους και τους Ιεβουσαίους. 12 Προσέξτε να μην κάνετε συνθήκη με τους κατοίκους της χώρας στην οποία θα μπείτε, γιατί αυτό θα μπορούσε να γίνει παγίδα για σας. 13 Αντίθετα, να καταστρέψετε τα θυσιαστήρια τους, να συντρίψετε τις λίθινες και τις ξύλινες λατρευτικές τους στήλες.

14 »Δεν επιτρέπεται να προσκυνήσετε άλλο θεό, γιατί εγώ, ο Κύριος, δεν ανέχομαι αντίζηλους. Το όνομά μου είναι "Θεός που απαιτεί αποκλειστικότητα". 15 Να μη συνάψετε, λοιπόν, συνθήκη με τους κατοίκους της χώρας εκείνης, γιατί, όταν αυτοί τελούν λατρεία αθέμιτη στους θεούς τους και θυσιάζουν σ’ αυτούς, υπάρχει φόβος να σας προσκαλέσουν να φάτε απ’ αυτά που θυσιάζουν. 16 Μπορεί ακόμη να πάρετε από τις θυγατέρες τους γυναίκες για τους γιους σας, κι αυτές να πορνεύσουν, ακολουθώντας τους θεούς τους και να παρασύρουν έτσι τα παιδιά σας στην ειδωλολατρία.

17 »Να μην κάνετε είδωλα θεών χυτά για να τα λατρεύετε.

18 »Να τηρείτε τη γιορτή των Αζύμων. Εφτά μέρες θα τρώτε άζυμο ψωμί το μήνα Αβίβ, όπως σας έχω διατάξει, γιατί αυτό το μήνα βγήκατε από την Αίγυπτο.

19 »Κάθε πρωτότοκος γιος σας θα ανήκει σ’ εμένα, καθώς και κάθε πρωτογέννητο αρσενικό από τα ζώα σας, είτε είναι βόδια είτε πρόβατα. 20 Το πρωτογέννητο πουλάρι*Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 13:13. όμως θα το εξαγοράζετε μ’ ένα πρόβατο ή μ’ ένα κατσίκι. Κι αν δεν θέλετε να το εξαγοράσετε, θα του σπάζετε τον τράχηλο. Επίσης θα εξαγοράζετε κάθε πρωτότοκο γιο σας. Δε θα εμφανίζεστε μπροστά μου με άδεια χέρια.

21 »Έξι μέρες θα εργάζεστε, αλλά την έβδομη θα αναπαύεστε, είτε είναι εποχή οργώματος είτε συγκομιδής.

22 »Θα γιορτάζετε τη γιορτή των Εβδομάδων (στο θερισμό των πρώτων σιτηρών) και τη γιορτή της Συγκομιδής (των πρώτων καρπών) το φθινόπωρο. 23 Τρεις φορές το χρόνο όλοι οι άντρες σας θα πρέπει να παρουσιάζονται μπροστά σ’ εμένα, το Θεό του λαού Ισραήλ. 24 Τρεις φορές το χρόνο θα παρουσιάζεστε μπροστά σ’ εμένα, το Θεό σας, όταν θα έχω διώξει από μπροστά σας τα άλλα έθνη για να σας δώσω τα εδάφη τους και κανείς πια δε θα έχει βλέψεις στη χώρα σας.

25 »Δεν πρέπει να μου προσφέρετε ένζυμο ψωμί όταν θυσιάζετε ένα ζώο σ’ εμένα. Κρέας από την πασχαλινή θυσία δεν πρέπει να το φυλάτε ως την άλλη μέρα το πρωί.

26 »Τα καλύτερα από τα πρώτα προϊόντα του αγρού σας θα τα φέρνετε στον οίκο του Κυρίου, του Θεού σας. Δεν πρέπει όμως να βράζετε το κατσικάκι στο γάλα της μάνας του».*Δεν... Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 23:19.

27 Τέλος ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή: «Γράψε αυτά που σου λέω, γιατί με βάση αυτά τα λόγια εγώ θα συνάψω διαθήκη μαζί σου και με τους Ισραηλίτες».

28 Ο Μωυσής έμεινε εκεί μαζί με τον Κύριο σαράντα μερόνυχτα. Ψωμί δεν έφαγε και νερό δεν ήπιε. Και έγραψε στις πλάκες τους λόγους της διαθήκης, τις δέκα εντολές.

29 Όταν ο Μωυσής κατέβαινε από το όρος Σινά και οι δυο πλάκες του νόμου ήταν στα χέρια του, δεν ήξερε ότι το δέρμα του προσώπου του είχε γίνει λαμπερό όση ώρα μιλούσε με το Θεό, και ακτινοβολούσε. 30 Ο Ααρών και όλος ο λαός κοίταξαν το Μωυσή, και είδαν ότι το δέρμα του προσώπου του έλαμπε· γι’ αυτό φοβόντουσαν να τον πλησιάσουν. 31 Ο Μωυσής όμως τους κάλεσε, και τότε ο Ααρών και όλοι οι άρχοντες της κοινότητας πήγαν κοντά του κι αυτός τους μίλησε. 32 Ύστερα πλησίασαν κι οι υπόλοιποι Ισραηλίτες, κι ο Μωυσής τούς ανακοίνωσε όλες τις εντολές που του είχε δώσει ο Κύριος στο όρος Σινά.

33 Όταν ο Μωυσής τελείωσε τη συνομιλία του μαζί τους σκέπασε το πρόσωπό του μ’ ένα κάλυμμα. 34 Κάθε φορά που ο Μωυσής ερχόταν ενώπιον του Κυρίου για να μιλήσει μαζί του, έβγαζε το κάλυμμα, ως την ώρα που έβγαινε από τη σκηνή και ανακοίνωνε στο λαό τις εντολές που του είχαν δοθεί. 35 Τότε οι Ισραηλίτες έβλεπαν ότι το πρόσωπό του έλαμπε. Ύστερα έβαζε πάλι το κάλυμμα στο πρόσωπό του, ώσπου να ξαναμπεί στη σκηνή και να μιλήσει με τον Κύριο.

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest. 2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount. 3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.

4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. 8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped. 9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

10 And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee. 11 Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: 13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:*34.13 images: Heb. statues 14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: 15 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; 16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods. 17 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.

18 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt. 19 All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.*34.19 sheep: or, kid 20 But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.*34.20 lamb: or, kid

21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.

22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end.*34.22 year’s end: Heb. revolution of the year

23 Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel. 24 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year. 25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning. 26 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk. 27 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.*34.28 commandments: Heb. words

29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. 30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him. 31 And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them. 32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai. 33 And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. 34 But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. 35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
