1 Εκείνη την εποχή, ένας άντρας από την φυλή Λευί πήρε για σύζυγο μια κοπέλα, επίσης από τη φυλή Λευί. 2 Η γυναίκα έμεινε έγκυος και γέννησε αγόρι. Όταν είδε πόσο ωραίο ήταν το παιδί, το έκρυψε για τρεις μήνες. 3 Δεν ήταν όμως δυνατό να το κρύβει περισσότερο. Πήρε λοιπόν ένα καλάθι από πάπυρο, το άλειψε με πίσσα, έβαλε μέσα το παιδί και το άφησε στις καλαμιές, στις όχθες του Νείλου. 4 Έβαλε και την αδερφή του παιδιού να παρακολουθεί από μακριά τι θα γίνει.

5 Μια μέρα η κόρη του Φαραώ ήρθε να λουστεί στο Νείλο και μπήκε στο ποτάμι, ενώ οι υπηρέτριές της περπατούσαν στην όχθη του. Κάποια στιγμή, εκείνη είδε το καλάθι ανάμεσα στα καλάμια κι έστειλε τη δούλη της να το πάρει. 6 Το άνοιξε κι είδε μέσα ένα μικρό αγόρι που έκλαιγε· το λυπήθηκε και είπε: «Αυτό είναι εβραιόπουλο».

7 Τότε η αδερφή του παιδιού ρώτησε την κόρη του Φαραώ: «Να πάω να σου φωνάξω μια τροφό από τις Εβραίες, να σου θηλάζει το παιδί;»

8 Η κόρη του Φαραώ της λέει: «Πήγαινε». Πάει το κορίτσι και φωνάζει τη μητέρα του παιδιού. 9 «Πάρε αυτό το παιδί», της λέει η κόρη του Φαραώ, «και θήλασέ το για μένα, κι εγώ θα σου δίνω την αμοιβή σου».

Έτσι πήρε η γυναίκα το παιδί και το θήλαζε. 10 Όταν το παιδί μεγάλωσε, το έφερε στη θυγατέρα του Φαραώ. Εκείνη το υιοθέτησε και του έδωσε το όνομα Μωυσής,*Μωυσής. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η φρ. «τραβηγμένος έξω». «επειδή», είπε, «τον έβγαλα απ’ το νερό».

11 Όταν ο Μωυσής είχε πια μεγαλώσει, πήγε μια μέρα να δει τους συμπατριώτες του. Καθώς παρακολουθούσε τις βαριές δουλειές που τους υποχρέωναν να κάνουν, βλέπει κι έναν Αιγύπτιο να χτυπάει έναν Εβραίο συμπατριώτη του. 12 Κοίταξε τριγύρω, κι όταν είδε πως δεν ήταν εκεί κανείς, σκότωσε τον Αιγύπτιο και τον έκρυψε στην άμμο.

13 Την άλλη μέρα πήγε πάλι και είδε δύο Εβραίους να φιλονικούν. Και είπε σ’ εκείνον που είχε το άδικο: «Γιατί χτυπάς το συμπατριώτη σου;» 14 Εκείνος του απάντησε: «Ποιος σ’ έβαλε άρχοντα και δικαστή σ’ εμάς; Ή μήπως θέλεις να με σκοτώσεις κι εμένα όπως σκότωσες τον Αιγύπτιο;» Τότε φοβήθηκε ο Μωυσής και σκέφτηκε: «Ώστε το επεισόδιο μαθεύτηκε!» 15 Όταν έμαθε ο Φαραώ αυτή την πράξη, ζητούσε να σκοτώσει το Μωυσή. Ο Μωυσής όμως κρύφτηκε και κατέφυγε στη Μαδιάμ. Εκεί κάθισε κοντά σ’ ένα πηγάδι.

16 Ο ιερέας της Μαδιάμ είχε εφτά κόρες. Αυτές ήρθαν να βγάλουν νερό για να γεμίσουν τις ποτίστρες και να ποτίσουν τα πρόβατα του πατέρα τους. 17 Ήρθαν όμως κάτι βοσκοί και τις έδιωχναν. Τότε σηκώθηκε ο Μωυσής και τις υπερασπίστηκε, και πότισε αυτός τα πρόβατά τους. 18 Όταν οι κοπέλες γύρισαν στον πατέρα τους το Ραγουήλ,*Ραγουήλ. Στο κεφ. 3εξ. το όνομα του ιερέα αναφέρεται ως «Ιοθόρ». εκείνος τις ρώτησε: «Γιατί ήρθατε σήμερα τόσο νωρίς;»

19 Αυτές του απάντησαν: «Ένας Αιγύπτιος μας γλίτωσε από τους βοσκούς, έβγαλε μάλιστα ο ίδιος νερό και πότισε τα πρόβατα».

20 Τότε ο πατέρας τους τις ρώτησε: «Πού είναι, λοιπόν, αυτός ο άνθρωπος; Γιατί τον αφήσατε εκεί; Καλέστε τον για φαγητό».

21 Έτσι ο Μωυσής αποφάσισε να μείνει κοντά σ’ αυτόν τον άνθρωπο, κι εκείνος του έδωσε για γυναίκα τη θυγατέρα του τη Σεπφώρα. 22 Αυτή γέννησε γιο κι ο Μωυσής τον ονόμασε Γερσώμ,*Γερσώμ. Στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως η λ. «ξένος». «επειδή», είπε, «είμαι πάροικος σε ξένη χώρα».

23 Ύστερα από πολύν καιρό πέθανε ο βασιλιάς της Αιγύπτου. Οι Ισραηλίτες όμως εξακολουθούσαν να στενάζουν στη σκλαβιά και να φωνάζουν για βοήθεια· κι έφτασε η κραυγή τους στο Θεό. 24 Άκουσε, λοιπόν, ο Θεός το στεναγμό τους, κι αναλογίστηκε τη διαθήκη που είχε κάνει με τον Αβραάμ, τον Ισαάκ και τον Ιακώβ. 25 Έστρεψε το βλέμμα του προς τους Ισραηλίτες και ενδιαφέρθηκε γι’ αυτούς.

1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. 3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.

5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. 6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. 7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. 11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. 13 And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? 14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian?
