1 «Μη διαδίδεις φήμες ψεύτικες. Μη δίνεις, για χάρη ενός ανθρώπου αδίκου, μαρτυρία αναληθή. 2 Να μην ακολουθείς τους πολλούς στο κακό, και σε περίπτωση δίκης να μην καταθέτεις παίρνοντας το μέρος των πολλών για να διαστρέφεις το δίκαιο. 3 Να μη μεροληπτείς στη δίκη ούτε για χάρη του αδύνατου διαδίκου.

4 »Αν συναντήσεις το βόδι του εχθρού σου ή το υποζύγιό του να περιπλανιέται, πρέπει να το οδηγήσεις στον αφέντη του. 5 Αν δεις το υποζύγιο του εχθρού σου να γονατίζει από το φορτίο του, μην τραβήξεις το δρόμο σου, αλλά να τον βοηθήσεις πρόθυμα.

6 »Μην αφήσεις να καταπατηθεί το δίκιο ενός γνωστού σου φτωχού κατά τη δίκη του. 7 Μείνε μακριά από κάθε υπόθεση απάτης. Μην προκαλέσεις το θάνατο ενός αθώου κι ενός που είναι δίκαιος, γιατί εγώ δε θα αθωώσω τον άδικο. 8 Να μη δέχεσαι δώρα, γιατί τα δώρα εμποδίζουν την ορθή κρίση και καταστρέφουν τις υποθέσεις των δίκαιων ανθρώπων.

9 »Ξένον μην καταπιέζετε, γιατί ξέρετε πώς αισθάνεται ο ξένος, αφού κι εσείς ήσασταν κάποτε ξένοι στην Αίγυπτο».

10 «Έξι χρόνια θα σπέρνεις τη γη σου και θα κάνεις τη συγκομιδή των προϊόντων της. 11 Τον έβδομο χρόνο θα την αφήνεις ν’ αναπαύεται. Όσα παράγει δεν θα τα μαζεύεις αλλά θα τα αφήνεις ελεύθερα για να τρέφονται οι φτωχοί του λαού σου, και απ’ ό,τι περισσέψει, τα άγρια ζώα. Το ίδιο θα γίνεται και με το αμπέλι σου και με τον ελαιώνα σου.

12 »Έξι μέρες θα κάνεις τις εργασίες σου και την έβδομη θα γιορτάζεις το Σάββατο, για ν’ αναπαύεται το βόδι και το υποζύγιο σου, και να μπορεί ν’ ανασάνει ο δούλος σου και ο ξένος που σου δουλεύουν.

13 »Όλα αυτά που σας είπα, να τα τηρείτε. Και το όνομα άλλων θεών ούτε να το επικαλείσθε, ούτε να βγαίνει καν από το στόμα σας».

14 «Με τρεις γιορτές θα με τιμάτε κάθε χρόνο: 15 Η πρώτη είναι η γιορτή των Αζύμων. Εφτά μέρες το μήνα Αβίβ θα τρώτε άζυμο ψωμί, όπως σας έχω διατάξει, γιατί αυτόν το μήνα βγήκατε από την Αίγυπτο. Κανένας δεν θα εμφανίζεται ενώπιόν μου με άδεια χέρια. 16 Ακόμη θα τηρείτε τη γιορτή του Θερισμού των πρωτογεννημάτων από τα σιτηρά που θα ’χετε σπείρει. Τρίτη θα τηρείτε τη γιορτή της Συγκομιδής στο τέλος του χρόνου, όταν θα ’χετε συγκεντρώσει τους καρπούς από τους αμπελώνες σας και τους δεντρόκηπούς σας. 17 Τρεις φορές το χρόνο θα παρουσιάζονται ενώπιόν μου, μπροστά στην κιβωτό του Κυρίου, όλα τα αρσενικά μέλη των οικογενειών σας.

18 »Όταν μου προσφέρετε θυσία ένα ζώο, δεν πρέπει να το συνοδεύετε με ένζυμο ψωμί· και το λίπος των θυσιών, που θα μου προσφέρετε την ημέρα της γιορτής, δεν πρέπει να το φυλάτε ως την άλλη μέρα το πρωί.

19 »Τα καλύτερα από τα πρωτογεννήματα της γης σας θα τα φέρνετε στον οίκο του Κυρίου του Θεού σας. Δεν πρέπει όμως να βράζετε το κατσικάκι στο γάλα της μάνας του».*Δεν πρέπει... Έθιμο της χανανιτικής λατρείας.

20 Ο Κύριος είπε: «Εγώ θα σας στείλω έναν άγγελο να προπορεύεται, για να σας φυλάει στην πορεία σας και να σας οδηγήσει στον τόπο που σας ετοίμασα. 21 Να τον προσέχετε σ’ ό,τι σας λέει και να τον υπακούτε. Να μην του εναντιώνεστε, γιατί αυτό δε θα σας το συγχωρήσει· αυτός θα ενεργεί εξ ονόματός μου. 22 Αν όμως τον υπακούτε και κάνετε πρόθυμα ό,τι σας προστάζω, τότε εγώ θα είμαι εχθρός των εχθρών σας και αντίπαλος των αντιπάλων σας.

23 »Ο άγγελός μου, που θα προπορεύεται μπροστά σας, θα σας οδηγήσει στους Αμορραίους, στους Χετταίους, στους Φερεζαίους, στους Χαναναίους, στους Ευαίους και στους Ιεβουσαίους, και εγώ θα τους εξολοθρεύσω. 24 Δε θα προσκυνήσετε τους θεούς τους ούτε θα τους λατρεύσετε, ούτε θα κάνετε ό,τι κάνουν αυτοί στις λατρείες τους. Αντιθέτως, θα γκρεμίσετε τους θεούς τους και θα συντρίψετε τις ιερές στήλες τους. 25 Εσείς θα λατρεύσετε τον Κύριο το Θεό σας, κι εγώ θα ευλογήσω το ψωμί που τρώτε και το νερό που πίνετε, και θα εξαφανίσω όλες τις αρρώστιες σας. 26 Στη χώρα σας δεν θα υπάρχει γυναίκα που ν’ αποβάλλει ή να είναι άτεκνη· και θα σας χαρίσω μακροζωΐα.

27 »Θα στείλω το φόβο μου να πηγαίνει μπροστά σας. Θα φέρνω σύγχυση σε κάθε λαό που θα πολεμάτε και θα κάνω τους εχθρούς σας να τρέπονται σε φυγή. 28 Θα προκαλέσω πανικό, που θα διώξει τους Ευαίους, τους Χαναναίους και τους Χετταίους από μπροστά σας. 29 Αλλά δε θα τους διώξω μέσα σε ένα χρόνο, για να μην ερημωθεί η χώρα και γίνουν τα άγρια θηρία περισσότερα από σας. 30 Θα τους διώχνω από μπροστά σας λίγο λίγο, ώσπου εσείς να πολλαπλασιαστείτε και να κυριαρχήσετε στη χώρα.

31 »Θα βάλω τα σύνορά σας να εκτείνονται από την Ερυθρά Θάλασσα ως τη Μεσόγειο Θάλασσα*ως τη Μεσόγειο Θάλασσα. Κατά λ. «ως τη θάλασσα των Φιλισταίων». κι από την έρημο του Σινά ως τον ποταμό Ευφράτη. Θα παραδώσω στην εξουσία σας τους κατοίκους εκείνης της χώρας και θα τους διώξετε από ’κει. 32 Δε θα συνάψετε καμιά συνθήκη ούτε μ’ αυτούς ούτε με τους θεούς τους. 33 Δε θα παραμείνουν αυτοί οι λαοί στη χώρα σας για να μη σας κάνουν και αμαρτήσετε απέναντί μου. Γιατί αν λατρεύσετε τους θεούς τους, αυτό θα είναι για σας παγίδα».

3 Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause.

4 If thou meet thine enemy’s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. 5 If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.*23.5 and…: or, wilt thou cease to help him? or, and wouldest cease to leave thy business for him: thou shalt surely leave it to join with him 6 Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. 7 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

8 And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.*23.8 the wise: Heb. the seeing

9 Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.*23.9 heart: Heb. soul

10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof: 11 But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.*23.11 oliveyard: or, olive trees 12 Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. 13 And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.

14 Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. 15 Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) 16 And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field. 17 Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD. 18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.*23.18 sacrifice: or, feast 19 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. 20 Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. 21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him. 22 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.*23.22 an adversary…: or, I will afflict them that afflict thee 23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. 24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images. 25 And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

26 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil. 27 I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.*23.27 backs: Heb. neck 28 And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. 29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee. 30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land. 31 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee. 32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. 33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.
