1 Ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή: 2 «Θα αφιερώσεις σ’ εμένα όλα τα αρσενικά πρωτότοκα. Κάθε αρσενικό των Ισραηλιτών που γεννιέται πρώτο, είτε άνθρωπος είναι είτε ζώο, θα ανήκει σ’ εμένα».

3 Ο Μωυσής είπε στο λαό: «Να τη θυμάστε την ημέρα αυτή που βγήκατε από την Αίγυπτο, τον τόπο της δουλείας. Ο Κύριος σας έβγαλε από ’κει με δυναμικές ενέργειες. Γι’ αυτό δεν θα τρώτε ψωμί φτιαγμένο με προζύμι. 4 Σήμερα αναχωρείτε, το μήνα Αβίβ. 5 Κι όταν ο Κύριος σας φέρει στη χώρα των Χαναναίων, των Χετταίων, των Αμορραίων, των Ευαίων και των Ιεβουσαίων, που υποσχέθηκε στους προγόνους σας ότι θα σας δώσει, στη χώρα όπου ρέει γάλα και μέλι, πρέπει να διατηρήσετε αυτή τη γιορτή, τον ίδιο τούτο μήνα. 6 Για εφτά μέρες θα τρώτε άζυμο ψωμί, και η έβδομη μέρα θα είναι γιορτή αφιερωμένη στον Κύριο. 7 Τις εφτά αυτές ημέρες ψωμί και ο,τιδήποτε είναι φτιαγμένο με προζύμι θα εξαφανίζεται απ’ όλη την περιοχή σας.

8 »Την ημέρα αυτή θα εξηγείτε στους γιους σας ότι ο Κύριος τα έκανε όλα αυτά για σας, κατά την έξοδό σας. 9 Αυτή η γιορτή θα είναι για σας μια υπόμνηση, κάτι σαν ανεξίτηλο σημάδι στο χέρι ή στο μέτωπό σας. Θα σας θυμίζει ότι το νόμο του Κυρίου πρέπει να τον ψιθυρίζετε συνεχώς στο στόμα σας, γιατί ο Κύριος σας έβγαλε από την Αίγυπτο με δυναμικές ενέργειες. 10 Τη γιορτή αυτή θα την τηρείτε κάθε χρόνο στην ορισμένη ημερομηνία της».

11 Ο Μωυσής συνέχισε: «Όταν ο Κύριος σας φέρει στη χώρα των Χαναναίων και σας τη δώσει, όπως το ορκίστηκε σ’ εσάς και στους προγόνους σας, 12 θ’ αφιερώνετε σ’ αυτόν κάθε αρσενικό που γεννιέται πρώτο. Κάθε πρωτογέννητο αρσενικό ζώο απ’ τα κοπάδια σας θα ανήκει στον Κύριο. 13 Κάθε πρωτογέννητο πουλάρι,*Το πουλάρι ως «ακάθαρτο» δεν μπορούσε να προσφερθεί θυσία στον Κύριο. Γι’ αυτό στη θέση του θυσίαζαν (το «εξαγόραζαν» με) ένα αρνί ή κατσίκι (πρβλ. Αρ 18:15-16). όμως, θα το εξαγοράζετε με ένα αρνί ή μ’ ένα κατσίκι. Αν δεν θέλετε να το εξαγοράσετε, πρέπει να του σπάσετε το σβέρκο. Επίσης κάθε πρωτότοκο γιο σας θα τον εξαγοράζετε.

14 »Αν κάποτε σας ρωτήσουν τα παιδιά σας τι σημαίνει αυτό, θα τους απαντήσετε: "ο Κύριος μας έβγαλε από την Αίγυπτο, τον τόπο της δουλείας, με δυναμικές ενέργειες. 15 Όταν ο Φαραώ αρνιόταν πεισματικά να μας αφήσει να φύγουμε, ο Κύριος θανάτωσε όλα τα πρωτότοκα στην Αίγυπτο, ανθρώπους και ζώα. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που θυσιάζουμε κάθε πρωτογέννητο αρσενικό ζώο κι εξαγοράζουμε κάθε πρωτότοκο γιο μας". 16 Αυτές οι θυσίες πρέπει να είναι για σας μια υπόμνηση, κάτι σαν ανεξίτηλο σημάδι στο χέρι ή στο μέτωπό σας, ότι με ενέργειες δυναμικές μάς έβγαλε ο Κύριος από την Αίγυπτο».

17 Όταν ο Φαραώ άφησε το λαό να φύγει, ο Θεός δεν τους οδήγησε από το δρόμο της χώρας των Φιλισταίων, που ήταν κι ο συντομότερος, γιατί σκέφτηκε πως υπήρχε φόβος να μετανιώσουν και να ξαναγυρίσουν στην Αίγυπτο, αν βρίσκονταν στην ανάγκη να πολεμήσουν. 18 Γι’ αυτό άφησε το λαό να πάρει το δρόμο προς την έρημο, προς την Ερυθρά Θάλασσα.

Όταν οι Ισραηλίτες βγήκαν από την Αίγυπτο ήταν καλά οπλισμένοι. 19 Ο Μωυσής πήρε μαζί του και τα οστά του Ιωσήφ, γιατί εκείνος είχε ορκίσει τους Ισραηλίτες να πάρουν από την Αίγυπτο μαζί τους τα οστά του, όταν ο Θεός θα τους απελευθέρωνε.

20 Οι Ισραηλίτες έφυγαν από τη Σουκκώθ και στρατοπέδευσαν στην Εθάμ, εκεί που αρχίζει η έρημος. 21 Ο Θεός προχωρούσε μπροστά τους τη μέρα μέσα σε μια στήλη νεφέλης για να τους δείχνει το δρόμο, και τη νύχτα μέσα σε στήλη φωτιάς, για να τους φωτίζει, ώστε να πορεύονται μέρα και νύχτα. 22 Η στήλη της νεφέλης δεν έλειπε ποτέ μπροστά από το λαό τη μέρα ούτε η στήλη της φωτιάς τη νύχτα.

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.*13.3 bondage: Heb. servants 4 This day came ye out in the month Abib.

5 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.

8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt. 9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD’s law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt. 10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.

11 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee, 12 That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD’s.*13.12 set…: Heb. cause to pass over 13 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.*13.13 lamb: or, kid

14 And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage:*13.14 in…: Heb. to morrow 15 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast: therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem. 16 And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.

17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: 18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.*13.18 harnessed: or, by five in a rank 19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.

20 And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
