1 Τότε αποκρίθηκε ο Μωυσής: «Κι αν δε με πιστέψουν και δε με υπακούσουν, κι αμφισβητήσουν ότι μου παρουσιάστηκε ο Κύριος;»

2 Τότε ο Κύριος τον ρώτησε: «Τι είναι αυτό που κρατάς στο χέρι σου;» Αυτός απάντησε: «Ραβδί».

3 «Ρίξ’ το στη γη», του είπε ο Κύριος. Ο Μωυσής το έριξε στη γη, και το ραβδί μεταμορφώθηκε σε φίδι.

Ο Μωυσής έτρεξε να φύγει. 4 Αλλά ο Κύριος του είπε: «Άπλωσε το χέρι σου και πιάσ’ το απ’ την ουρά». Ο Μωυσής άπλωσε το χέρι του, το έπιασε, κι αυτό έγινε πάλι ραβδί στο χέρι του. 5 «Έτσι», του λέει, «θα πιστέψουν οι Ισραηλίτες ότι σου παρουσιάστηκε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των προγόνων τους, του Αβραάμ, του Ισαάκ και του Ιακώβ». 6 Και συνέχισε ο Κύριος: «Βάλε το χέρι σου στη μασχάλη σου». Έβαλε το χέρι του στη μασχάλη του ο Μωυσής, αλλά όταν το έβγαλε, το χέρι του ήταν άσπρο σαν χιόνι. 7 Τότε του είπε ο Κύριος: «Βάλε πάλι το χέρι σου στη μασχάλη σου». Κι όταν το έβγαλε, αυτή τη φορά το χέρι του είχε ξαναγίνει όπως το υπόλοιπο σώμα του.

8 «Και αν δε σε πιστέψουν», είπε ο Κύριος, «αν δεν πεισθούν με το πρώτο θαύμα, θα πιστέψουν με το δεύτερο. 9 Και αν δε πεισθούν με τα δυο αυτά θαύματα και δεν ακούσουν αυτά που θα τους πεις, τότε θα πάρεις λίγο νερό από το Νείλο και θα το χύσεις στο έδαφος· και το νερό αυτό του ποταμού θα γίνει αίμα».

10 Ο Μωυσής όμως είπε στον Κύριο: «Εγώ, Κύριέ μου, ποτέ μέχρι σήμερα δεν ήμουν επιδέξιος ομιλητής, ούτε κι έγινα από την ώρα που άρχισες να μου μιλάς. Είμαι βραδύγλωσσος, τραυλίζω».

11 Ο Κύριος του είπε: «Ποιος έδωσε το στόμα στον άνθρωπο; Και ποιος κάνει τον άνθρωπο άλαλο ή κουφό, να βλέπει ή να ’ναι τυφλός; Εγώ, ο Κύριος. 12 Πήγαινε, λοιπόν, τώρα κι εγώ θα είμαι μαζί σου όταν θα μιλάς, και θα σου υποδεικνύω τι να λες».

13 Ο Μωυσής απάντησε: «Σε παρακαλώ, Κύριέ μου, στείλε κανέναν άλλον».

14 Τότε οργίστηκε ο Κύριος με το Μωυσή και του είπε: «Έχεις τον αδερφό σου τον Ααρών, το Λευίτη. Ξέρω ότι αυτός μιλάει με ευκολία. Έρχεται μάλιστα να σε συναντήσει και θα χαρεί όταν σε δει. 15 Θα του μιλήσεις και θα του υπαγορεύσεις τι να πει, κι εγώ θα είμαι μαζί μ’ εσένα και μ’ εκείνον όταν θα μιλάτε, και θα σας υποδεικνύω τι να κάνετε. 16 Αυτός θα μιλάει αντί για σένα στο λαό και θα είναι το στόμα σου, κι εσύ θα είσαι για κείνον σαν Θεός, να του υπαγορεύεις τι να λέει. 17 Πάρε στο χέρι σου αυτό το ραβδί. Μ’ αυτό θα κάνεις τα θαύματα».

18 Ο Μωυσής έφυγε και πήγε στον πεθερό του τον Ιοθόρ και του είπε: «Θα φύγω και θα γυρίσω πίσω στους αδερφούς μου στην Αίγυπτο για να δω αν ζουν ακόμα». Ο Ιοθόρ τού απάντησε: «Πήγαινε στο καλό».

19 Ενόσω ο Μωυσής ήταν ακόμα στη Μαδιάμ, ο Κύριος του είπε: «Φύγε, γύρνα στην Αίγυπτο, γιατί πέθαναν οι άνθρωποι που ήθελαν να σε σκοτώσουν». 20 Πήρε τότε ο Μωυσής τη γυναίκα του και τους γιους του, τους ανέβασε στο υποζύγιο και έφυγε για την Αίγυπτο. Πήρε και το θαυματουργό ραβδί του Θεού στο χέρι του.

21 Ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή: «Όταν θα φτάσεις στην Αίγυπτο, πρόσεξε να κάνεις μπροστά στο Φαραώ όλα τα θαύματα που σου έδωσα τη δύναμη να κάνεις. Εγώ όμως θα ενισχύσω την άκαμπτη διάθεσή του, ώστε να μην αφήσει το λαό να φύγει. 22 Θα πεις στο Φαραώ: "Αυτά λέει ο Κύριος: Ο Ισραήλ είναι ο πρωτότοκος γιος μου. 23 Γι’ αυτό σου λέω, άσε το γιο μου να φύγει για να με λατρεύσει. Αν αρνηθείς να τον αφήσεις, εγώ θα θανατώσω το γιο σου τον πρωτότοκο"».

24 Στο δρόμο, εκεί που σταμάτησε για να διανυκτερεύσει, όρμησε εναντίον του ο Κύριος και ζητούσε να τον θανατώσει. 25 Τότε η Σεπφώρα πήρε ένα λιθάρι κοφτερό κι έκοψε το άκρο του δέρματος του γεννητικού μορίου του γιου της, και αγγίζοντας τα πόδια του Μωυσή τού είπε: «Σύζυγος αίματος είσαι για μένα*Σύζυγος... μένα. Αρχαιοπρεπής συμβολική έκφραση από την τελετουργία της περιτομής.». 26 Έτσι ο Κύριος έφυγε από το Μωυσή. Η Σεπφώρα χρησιμοποίησε την έκφραση «Σύζυγος του αίματος» για την περιτομή.

27 Στο μεταξύ ο Κύριος είχε πει στον Ααρών: «Πήγαινε να συναντήσεις το Μωυσή στην έρημο». Αυτός πήγε και τον συνάντησε στο βουνό του Θεού και τον καταφίλησε. 28 Ο Μωυσής ανακοίνωσε στον Ααρών όλα όσα ο Κύριος του είχε αναθέσει να πει και όλα τα θαύματα που τον είχε διατάξει να κάνει.

29 Πήγαν, λοιπόν, ο Μωυσής και ο Ααρών και συγκέντρωσαν όλους τους πρεσβυτέρους των Ισραηλιτών. 30 Ο Ααρών τούς ανακοίνωσε όλα όσα είχε πει ο Κύριος στο Μωυσή κι ο Μωυσής έκανε τα θαύματα μπροστά στο λαό. 31 Αυτοί πίστεψαν, και κατάλαβαν ότι ο Κύριος είχε στρέψει το ενδιαφέρον του στους Ισραηλίτες και είχε δει τη δυστυχία τους. Έσκυψαν τότε και προσκύνησαν.

1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: 5 That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

6 And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. 7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. 9 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.*4.9 shall become: Heb. shall be and shall be

10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.*4.10 eloquent: Heb. a man of words*4.10 heretofore: Heb. since yesterday, nor since the third day 11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. 13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.*4.13 wilt: or, shouldest 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God. 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.

18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.*4.18 Jethro: Heb. Jether 19 And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which sought thy life. 20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. 21 And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. 22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: 23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.

24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.*4.25 sharp…: or, knife*4.25 cast…: Heb. made it touch 26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

27 And the LORD said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him. 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him.

29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: 30 And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
