1 Ο Κύριος έδωσε εντολή στο Μωυσή να παρουσιαστεί στο Φαραώ και να του πει: «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των Εβραίων, λέει: "άσε το λαό μου να πάει να με λατρεύσει. 2 Αν όμως αρνηθείς να τους αφήσεις, και τους κρατήσεις κι άλλο με τη βία, 3 τότε εγώ, ο Κύριος, θα επέμβω και θα χτυπήσω τα ζώα σου που είναι στο χωράφι: Θα φέρω φοβερό θανατικό στα άλογα, στα γαϊδούρια, στις καμήλες, στα βόδια και στα πρόβατα. 4 Θα κάνω όμως διάκριση ανάμεσα στα ζώα των Αιγυπτίων και των Ισραηλιτών, έτσι που κανένα ζώο των Ισραηλιτών δεν θα ψοφήσει"». 5 Και όρισε ο Κύριος προθεσμία και είπε: «Αύριο εγώ ο Κύριος θα το πραγματοποιήσω αυτό στη χώρα».

6 Την άλλη μέρα το πρωί ο Κύριος πραγματοποίησε το λόγο του. Όλα τα ζώα των Αιγυπτίων ψόφησαν ενώ από τα ζώα των Ισραηλιτών δεν ψόφησε ούτε ένα. 7 Ο Φαραώ έστειλε να εξακριβώσουν το γεγονός, και είδε ότι από τα ζώα των Ισραηλιτών δεν είχε ψοφήσει ούτε ένα. Παρ’ όλα αυτά όμως έμεινε άκαμπτος και δεν άφησε το λαό να φύγει.

8 Ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή και στον Ααρών: «Πάρτε καπνιά από το φούρνο και γεμίστε τις χούφτες σας, κι ο Μωυσής ας τη διασκορπίσει στον αέρα, μπροστά στο Φαραώ. 9 Αυτή η καπνιά θα ξαναπέσει σαν σκόνη πάνω σ’ ολόκληρη την Αίγυπτο και θα προξενήσει στους ανθρώπους και στα ζώα εξανθήματα και πληγές».

10 Πήραν, λοιπόν, καπνιά από το φούρνο, στάθηκαν μπροστά στο Φαραώ κι ο Μωυσής τη σκόρπισε στον αέρα και προξενήθηκαν εξανθήματα και πληγές στους ανθρώπους και στα ζώα. 11 Οι μάγοι δεν μπορούσαν να παρουσιαστούν στο Μωυσή γιατί είχαν γεμίσει κι αυτοί πληγές, όπως όλοι οι Αιγύπτιοι. 12 Ο Κύριος όμως έκανε ακόμα πιο άκαμπτη τη διάθεση του Φαραώ, και δεν έκανε αυτό που του ζητούσαν ο Μωυσής κι ο Ααρών, όπως το είχε πει ο Κύριος στο Μωυσή.

13 Ο Κύριος είπε στο Μωυσή: «Σήκω αύριο το πρωί και πήγαινε να παρουσιαστείς στο Φαραώ και να του πεις ότι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των Εβραίων λέει: "άσε το λαό μου να πάει να με λατρεύσει, 14 γιατί αυτή τη φορά, εγώ θα στρέψω όλα μου τα χτυπήματα σ’ εσένα τον ίδιο, στους αυλικούς σου και στο λαό σου, για να μάθεις ότι δεν υπάρχει άλλος Θεός σαν εμένα σ’ ολόκληρη τη γη. 15 Αν είχα απλώσει το χέρι μου και σε είχα χτυπήσει εσένα και το λαό σου με θανατικό, θα είχατε εξαφανιστεί από τη γη. 16 Αλλά σε άφησα να ζήσεις, για να δεις τη δύναμή μου και να κηρυχτεί το όνομά μου σ’ ολόκληρη τη γη. 17 Ωστόσο εσύ εξακολουθείς να καταφρονείς το λαό μου και να μην τον αφήνεις να φύγει. 18 Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ, αύριο την ίδια ώρα, θα κάνω να πέσει τέτοιο χοντρό χαλάζι, που όμοιο του ποτέ δεν έπεσε στη Αίγυπτο, αφότου αυτή υπήρξε μέχρι σήμερα. 19 Και τώρα, στείλε και ειδοποίησε να σταβλίσουν τα κοπάδια σου και να μαζέψουν ό,τι άλλο έχεις και είναι έξω στα χωράφια· όλοι οι άνθρωποι και τα ζώα που θα βρεθούν στο ύπαιθρο και δε θα έχουν συναχθεί κάτω από κάποια στέγη, θα πέσει το χαλάζι πάνω τους και θα πεθάνουν"».

20 Όσοι από τους αξιωματούχους του Φαραώ σεβάστηκαν το λόγο του Κυρίου, φρόντισαν κι έβαλαν σε υπόστεγα τους δούλους και τα ζώα τους. 21 Όσοι δεν υπολόγισαν το λόγο του Κυρίου, άφησαν τους δούλους και τα ζώα τους στο ύπαιθρο.

22 Είπε λοιπόν ο Κύριος στο Μωυσή: «Σήκωσε το χέρι σου στον ουρανό, κι ας πέσει χαλάζι σ’ ολόκληρη την Αίγυπτο, πάνω στους ανθρώπους, στα ζώα και στα σπαρτά έξω στους αγρούς». 23 Ο Μωυσής σήκωσε το ραβδί του στον ουρανό, κι ο Κύριος άρχισε να στέλνει βροντές και χαλάζι. Κεραυνοί πέφτανε στη γη και αστραπές συνόδευαν το χαλάζι σ’ όλη τη χώρα. 24 Από τότε που η Αίγυπτος είχε γίνει έθνος, δεν είχε ξαναπέσει χαλάζι τόσο δυνατό. 25 Σ’ ολόκληρη τη χώρα το χαλάζι κατέστρεψε όσους ανθρώπους και ζώα βρέθηκαν έξω στα χωράφια, καθώς και όλη τη βλάστηση· επίσης έσπασαν όλα τα δέντρα στο ύπαιθρο. 26 Και μόνο στην περιοχή της Γεσέν, όπου κατοικούσαν οι Ισραηλίτες, δεν έπεσε χαλάζι.

27 Τότε έστειλε ο Φαραώ και κάλεσε το Μωυσή και τον Ααρών και τους είπε: «Αυτή τη φορά αμάρτησα· ο Κύριος είναι δίκαιος, ενώ εγώ κι ο λαός μου είμαστε ένοχοι. 28 Παρακαλέστε τον Κύριο, να σταματήσουν οι βροντές και το χαλάζι κι εγώ θα σας αφήσω να φύγετε· δεν είστε υποχρεωμένοι να μείνετε άλλο εδώ».

29 Ο Μωυσής τού απάντησε: «Μόλις βγω από την πόλη, θα υψώσω τα χέρια μου στον Κύριο. Θα πάψουν οι βροντές, και θα σταματήσει το χαλάζι, για να δεις ότι η γη ανήκει στον Κύριο. 30 Ξέρω όμως ότι εσύ και οι αυλικοί σου δεν φοβόσαστε ακόμη τον Κύριο, το Θεό».

31 Το λινάρι και το κριθάρι είχαν καταστραφεί, γιατί το κριθάρι είχε κιόλας στάχυα και το λινάρι ανθό. 32 Το σιτάρι όμως κι η βρίζα δεν είχαν καταστραφεί, γιατί βλασταίνουν αργότερα.

33 Ο Μωυσής έφυγε από το Φαραώ κι από την πόλη και ύψωσε τα χέρια του προς τον Κύριο. Τότε έπαψαν οι βροντές και το χαλάζι και σταμάτησε να βρέχει. 34 Μόλις είδε ο Φαραώ ότι έπαψε η βροχή, το χαλάζι και οι βροντές, έπεσε πάλι στην ίδια αμαρτία: Παρέμεινε άκαμπτος κι αυτός και οι αυλικοί του, 35 και δεν άφησε τους Ισραηλίτες να φύγουν, όπως το είχε πει ο Κύριος στο Μωυσή.

1 Then the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me. 2 For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still, 3 Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain. 4 And the LORD shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children’s of Israel. 5 And the LORD appointed a set time, saying, To morrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land. 6 And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died: but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one. 7 And Pharaoh sent, and, behold, there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

8 And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron, Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace, and let Moses sprinkle it toward the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh. 9 And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt. 10 And they took ashes of the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven; and it became a boil breaking forth with blains upon man, and upon beast. 11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians. 12 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had spoken unto Moses.

13 And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me. 14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth. 15 For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. 16 And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.*9.16 raised…: Heb. made thee stand 17 As yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go? 18 Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now. 19 Send therefore now, and gather thy cattle, and all that thou hast in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die. 20 He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses: 21 And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.*9.21 regarded…: Heb. set not his heart unto

22 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt. 23 And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt. 24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, was there no hail.

27 And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time: the LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked. 28 Intreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail; and I will let you go, and ye shall stay no longer.*9.28 mighty…: Heb. voices of God 29 And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD; and the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the LORD’s. 30 But as for thee and thy servants, I know that ye will not yet fear the LORD God. 31 And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was bolled. 32 But the wheat and the rie were not smitten: for they were not grown up.*9.32 not grown…: Heb. hidden or, dark 33 And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD: and the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth. 34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased, he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants. 35 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, neither would he let the children of Israel go; as the LORD had spoken by Moses.*9.35 by Moses: Heb. by the hand of Moses
