1 Μετά απ’ αυτά, ο Μωυσής κι ο Ααρών πήγαν στο Φαραώ και του είπαν: «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "Άσε το λαό μου να φύγουν και να πάνε να κάνουν μια γιορτή στην έρημο για να με τιμήσουν"». 2 Ο Φαραώ απάντησε: «Ποιος είναι ο Κύριος, που πρέπει να τον υπακούσω και ν’ αφήσω τους Ισραηλίτες να φύγουν; Δε γνωρίζω τον Κύριο, και δε θ’ αφήσω τους Ισραηλίτες να φύγουν».

3 Εκείνοι του είπαν: «Ο Θεός των Εβραίων μάς φανερώθηκε. Πρέπει να βαδίσουμε τρεις μέρες πορεία στην έρημο για να προσφέρουμε θυσία στον Κύριο, το Θεό μας. Αλλιώς θα στραφεί εναντίον μας με καμιά επιδημία ή με πόλεμο».

4 Ο βασιλιάς της Αιγύπτου τους είπε: «Γιατί, Μωυσή και Ααρών, θέλετε ν’ αποσπάτε το λαό από τα έργα του; Πηγαίνετε στη δουλειά σας. 5 Τώρα που ο λαός αυτός πλήθυνε μέσα στη χώρα, εσείς θέλετε να τον σταματήσετε από τη δουλειά του».

6 Την ίδια εκείνη μέρα ο Φαραώ έδωσε αυτή τη διαταγή στους εργοδηγούς του λαού και στους επιστάτες: 7 «Δε θα δίνετε πια άχυρο στο λαό για να κατασκευάζουν πλίθρες, όπως γινόταν μέχρι σήμερα. Οι ίδιοι θα πηγαίνουν και θα μαζεύουν το άχυρο. 8 Αλλά θα τους αναγκάσετε να παράγουν πλίθρες στην ίδια ποσότητα όπως μέχρι σήμερα. Καθόλου λιγότερες. Γιατί είναι τεμπέληδες. Γι’ αυτό φωνάζουν και λένε, "θέλουμε να προσφέρουμε θυσία στο Θεό μας". 9 Η δουλειά τους πρέπει να γίνει πιο βαριά, ώστε να είναι συνέχεια απασχολημένοι, και να μην ξεσηκώνονται με παραπλανητικά λόγια».

10 Οι εργοδηγοί του λαού και οι επιστάτες τους βγήκαν και είπαν στο λαό: «Ακούστε τι είπε ο Φαραώ: "Δε θα σας δίνουμε πια εμείς άχυρο. 11 Εσείς θα πηγαίνετε και θα μαζεύετε όπου το βρίσκετε, αλλά η παραγωγή σας δε θα ελαττωθεί"».

12 Σκορπίστηκε, λοιπόν, ο λαός σ’ ολόκληρη την Αίγυπτο, για να μαζέψουν άχυρο. 13 Οι εργοδηγοί όμως τους πίεζαν και τους έλεγαν: «Θα βγάζετε κάθε μέρα την ίδια παραγωγή που είχατε όταν σας δινόταν το άχυρο». 14 Χτυπούσαν ακόμα και τους επιστάτες των Ισραηλιτών που οι εργοδηγοί του Φαραώ τούς είχαν διορίσει για να τους επιτηρούν, και τους έλεγαν: «Γιατί δεν κάνετε και σήμερα τόσες πλίθρες όσες κάνατε ως τώρα;».

15 Τότε οι επιστάτες των Ισραηλιτών πήγαν και παραπονέθηκαν στο Φαραώ: «Γιατί συμπεριφέρεσαι έτσι στους δούλους σου; 16 Άχυρο δεν μας δίνουν και παρ’ όλα αυτά μας διατάζουν να κάνουμε πλίθρες και μας χτυπούν κι από πάνω, πράγμα που είναι αδικία για το λαό σου.»*πράγμα... λαό σου. Στα εβρ. το κείμ. είναι ασαφές.

17 Ο Φαραώ απάντησε: «Τεμπέληδες είστε, ακαμάτηδες. Γι’ αυτό λέτε, "θέλουμε να πάμε να προσφέρουμε θυσία στον Κύριο". 18 Τώρα λοιπόν πηγαίνετε στη δουλειά σας. Άχυρο δεν θα σας δίνεται, αλλά εσείς οφείλετε να παραδίνετε τις πλίθρες στην ίδια ποσότητα». 19 Έτσι, οι επιστάτες των Ισραηλιτών βρέθηκαν σε δύσκολη θέση, γιατί διατάχθηκαν να παράγουν κάθε μέρα πλίθρες στην ίδια ποσότητα όπως και πριν.

20 Βγαίνοντας από το Φαραώ, συνάντησαν το Μωυσή και τον Ααρών, που τους περίμεναν. 21 «Ο Κύριος ας αναλάβει να σας κρίνει», τους είπαν. «Μας δυσφημίσατε στο Φαραώ και στους αυλικούς του και τους δώσατε όπλα για να μας εξοντώσουν».

22 Τότε ο Μωυσής στράφηκε στον Κύριο και του είπε: «Κύριέ μου, γιατί κακομεταχειρίζεσαι τόσο πολύ τούτο το λαό; Γιατί με έστειλες εδώ; 23 Αφότου ήρθα στο Φαραώ να του μιλήσω εξ ονόματός σου, αυτός τους φέρνεται σκληρά, κι εσύ δεν έκανες τίποτα για να ελευθερώσεις το λαό σου».

1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. 2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days’ journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword. 4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens. 5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God. 9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.*5.9 Let there…: Heb. 10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. 11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished. 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. 13 And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.*5.13 your daily…: Heb. a matter of a day in his day 14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants? 16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people. 17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD. 18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks. 19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.
