1 Ο Ιωσίας γιόρτασε το Πάσχα στην Ιερουσαλήμ προς τιμήν του Κυρίου. Στις δεκατέσσερις του πρώτου μήνα έσφαξαν τα πασχαλινά αρνιά. 2 Αποκατέστησε τους ιερείς στα καθήκοντά τους και τους παρότρυνε να εκτελούν σωστά την υπηρεσία του ναού του Κυρίου. 3 Μετά είπε στους λευίτες που ήταν αφιερωμένοι στον Κύριο και τους είχε ανατεθεί να διδάσκουν τους Ισραηλίτες:

«Η αγία κιβωτός είναι πια μόνιμα τοποθετημένη στο ναό που έχτισε ο Σολομών, γιος του Δαβίδ του βασιλιά των Ισραηλιτών. Από ’δω και πέρα δεν θα τη μεταφέρετε στους ώμους σας. Τώρα θα υπηρετείτε απερίσπαστοι τον Κύριο το Θεό σας και το λαό του τον Ισραήλ. 4 Χωριστείτε κατά οικογένειες και τάξεις, σύμφωνα με τις οδηγίες που έχουν δοθεί από το Δαβίδ και το γιο του το Σολομώντα. 5 Καθεμιά από τις τάξεις πρέπει να είναι έτοιμη να εξυπηρετήσει στο ναό έναν ορισμένο αριθμό οικογενειών του λαού. 6 Οφείλετε να προσφέρετε τη θυσία του Πάσχα. Εξαγνιστείτε, λοιπόν, για να είστε σε θέση να εξυπηρετήσετε τους συμπατριώτες σας, ώστε να γιορτάσουν το Πάσχα σύμφωνα με την εντολή του Κυρίου, που δόθηκε με το Μωυσή».

7 Ο Ιωσίας πρόσφερε από τα υπάρχοντά του σ’ όλο το λαό που ήταν παρόντες τριάντα χιλιάδες πρόβατα, αρνιά και κατσίκια, και τρεις χιλιάδες βόδια. 8 Οι αξιωματούχοι του βασιλιά πρόσφεραν κι αυτοί προαιρετικά στο λαό, στους ιερείς και στους Λευίτες. Ο Χελκίας, ο Ζαχαρίας και ο Ιεχιήλ, προϊστάμενοι του ναού του Θεού, έδωσαν στους ιερείς για τις θυσίες του Πάσχα δύο χιλιάδες εξακόσια αρνιά και κατσίκια και τριακόσια βόδια. 9 Οι επικεφαλής των λευιτών Κωνανίας, οι δύο αδερφοί του Σεμαΐας και Ναθαναήλ και οι Ασαβίας, Ιεχιήλ και Ιωζαβάδ, πρόσφεραν στους λευίτες για τις θυσίες του Πάσχα πέντε χιλιάδες αρνιά και κατσίκια, και πεντακόσια βόδια. 10 Η τελετή οργανώθηκε ως εξής: Οι ιερείς στάθηκαν στις θέσεις τους και οι λευίτες στις τάξεις τους, σύμφωνα με την διαταγή του βασιλιά. 11 Ο κόσμος έφερνε για σφάξιμο τα πρόβατα και τα κατσίκια· παρέδιδαν στους ιερείς το αίμα και οι ιερείς ράντιζαν μ’ αυτό το θυσιαστήριο· οι λευίτες έγδερναν τα σφαχτά. 12 Μετά έβαλαν στην άκρη τα ζώα και ειδικά τους ταύρους που προορίζονταν να προσφερθούν από το λαό κατά συγγένειες ολοκαύτωμα στον Κύριο, σύμφωνα με τα γραμμένα στο βιβλίο του Μωυσή.

13 Σύμφωνα με τις διατάξεις οι λευίτες έψησαν τα πασχαλινά αρνιά στη φωτιά, ενώ τις ιερές προσφορές τις έβρασαν σε χύτρες, σε καζάνια και σε άλλα χάλκινα είδη, και έφεραν γρήγορα τα κρέατα σ’ όλο το λαό. 14 Μετά οι λευίτες ετοίμασαν τις μερίδες που ανήκαν στους ιερείς και στους ίδιους. Οι ιερείς, απόγονοι του Ααρών, ήταν απασχολημένοι μέχρι τη νύχτα για να προσφέρουν τα ολοκαυτώματα και τα παχιά μέρη των άλλων θυσιών. Γι’ αυτό ανέλαβαν οι λευίτες να ετοιμάσουν μόνοι τους τα γεύματα για τους εαυτούς τους και για τους ιερείς.

15 Οι ψάλτες, απόγονοι του Ασάφ, παρέμεναν στις θέσεις τους, σύμφωνα με τις οδηγίες του Δαβίδ, του Ασάφ, του Αιμάν και του Ιεδουθούν των Βλεπόντων του βασιλιά· επίσης οι θυρωροί στέκονταν στις πύλες. Κανείς απ’ αυτούς δεν επιτρεπόταν ν’ απομακρυνθεί από την υπηρεσία του, και οι συνάδελφοί τους λευίτες ετοίμαζαν και γι’ αυτούς το φαγητό τους. 16 Έτσι οργανώθηκε εκείνη την ημέρα όλη η τελετή προς τιμήν του Κυρίου, η γιορτή του Πάσχα και η προσφορά των ολοκαυτωμάτων στο θυσιαστήριο του Κυρίου, σύμφωνα με τις διαταγές του βασιλιά Ιωσία.

17 Μετά τη γιορτή του Πάσχα οι Ισραηλίτες που βρίσκονταν εκεί γιόρτασαν και τη γιορτή των Αζύμων για εφτά μέρες. 18 Τέτοιο Πάσχα είχε να γιορταστεί στον Ισραήλ από την εποχή του προφήτη Σαμουήλ. Κανείς από τους προηγούμενους βασιλιάδες του Ισραήλ δεν είχε κάνει τέτοιο Πάσχα, σαν αυτό που έκανε ο Ιωσίας με τη βοήθεια των ιερέων, των λευιτών, των κατοίκων της Ιερουσαλήμ και του λαού του Ιούδα και του Ισραήλ, που βρέθηκαν εκεί. 19 Το Πάσχα εκείνο γιορτάστηκε το δέκατο όγδοο έτος της βασιλείας του Ιωσία.

20 Μια μέρα, μετά που ο βασιλιάς Ιωσίας είχε αποκαταστήσει το ναό, ο Φαραώ Νεχώ της Αιγύπτου ήρθε με το στρατό του να πολεμήσει στη Χαρκεμίς, κοντά στον ποταμό Ευφράτη. Τότε ο Ιωσίας βγήκε να τον εμποδίσει. 21 Ο Νεχώ όμως έστειλε αγγελιοφόρους στον Ιωσία και του έλεγε: «Τι ανακατεύεσαι εσύ στα δικά μου ζητήματα, βασιλιά του Ιούδα; Δεν έρχομαι σήμερα εναντίον σου, αλλά εναντίον της δυναστείας,*Ενν. η δυναστεία των Βαβυλωνίων βασιλιάδων. με την οποία έχω διαφορές· και ο Θεός με διέταξε να κάνω γρήγορα. Πάψε, λοιπόν, να προκαλείς το Θεό, που είναι μαζί μου, για να μη σε εξαφανίσει».

22 Αλλά ο Ιωσίας δεν ήθελε ν’ αποχωρήσει. Ήταν αποφασισμένος να πολεμήσει εναντίον του Νεχώ και δεν έδινε σημασία στους λόγους του Θεού που αυτός του έλεγε. Έτσι, ήρθε να πολεμήσει στην κοιλάδα Μεγιδδώ. 23 Στη διάρκεια της μάχης, οι τοξότες χτύπησαν το βασιλιά Ιωσία. Τότε αυτός είπε στους ανθρώπους του: «Πάρτε με από ’δω, γιατί πληγώθηκα βαριά». 24 Οι δούλοι του τον κατέβασαν από το άρμα της μάχης, τον ανέβασαν στην άλλη του άμαξα και τον έφεραν στην Ιερουσαλήμ.

Εκεί πέθανε και τον έθαψαν στους τάφους των προγόνων του. Όλος ο λαός του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ πένθησαν για τον Ιωσία. 25 Ο Ιερεμίας συνέθεσε θρηνητικό ύμνο για τον Ιωσία. Αυτό έγινε έθιμο στους Ισραηλίτες, όλοι οι ψάλτες και οι ψάλτριες να αναφέρουν τον Ιωσία στους θρήνους τους μέχρι σήμερα. Τα μοιρολόγια αυτά είναι καταχωρισμένα στη Συλλογή των Θρήνων.

26,27 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιωσία, από την αρχή ως το τέλος, είναι καταχωρισμένη στο Βιβλίο των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα. Εκεί αναφέρεται πώς τήρησε με πιστότητα όλα όσα είναι γραμμένα στο νόμο του Κυρίου.

1 Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the LORD in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. 2 And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD, 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel, 4 And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son. 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.*35.5 the families of the fathers: Heb. the house of the fathers*35.5 the people: Heb. the sons of the people 6 So kill the passover, and sanctify yourselves, and prepare your brethren, that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 7 And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.*35.7 gave: Heb. offered 8 And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.*35.8 gave willingly: Heb. offered, etc 9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.*35.9 gave: Heb. offered 10 So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment. 11 And they killed the passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood from their hands, and the Levites flayed them. 12 And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen. 13 And they roasted the passover with fire according to the ordinance: but the other holy offerings sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the people.*35.13 divided…: Heb. made them run 14 And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron. 15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.*35.15 place: Heb. station 16 So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day, to keep the passover, and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar of the LORD, according to the commandment of king Josiah. 17 And the children of Israel that were present kept the passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days.*35.17 present: Heb. found 18 And there was no passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a passover as Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.*35.18 present: Heb. found 19 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this passover kept.

20 After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.*35.20 temple: Heb. house 21 But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.*35.21 the house…: Heb. the house of my war 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.*35.23 wounded: Heb. made sick 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers.
