1 Ο Ιωσίας ήταν οχτώ ετών όταν έγινε βασιλιάς και βασίλεψε στην Ιερουσαλήμ τριάντα ένα χρόνια. 2 Έκανε το σωστό ενώπιον του Κυρίου ακολουθώντας απαρέγκλιτα το παράδειγμα του Δαβίδ, του προγόνου του.

3 Το όγδοο έτος της βασιλείας του, ενώ ήταν ακόμη νέος, ο Ιωσίας άρχισε να εκζητεί το Θεό του προπάτορά του Δαβίδ. Το δωδέκατο έτος άρχισε να ξεκαθαρίζει την περιοχή του Ιούδα και την Ιερουσαλήμ από τους ιερούς τόπους, τις ξύλινες λατρευτικές στήλες και τα αγάλματα των ειδώλων, τα πελεκητά και τα χυτά. 4 Οι άντρες του γκρέμισαν μπροστά του τα θυσιαστήρια των θεοτήτων του Βάαλ και σύντριψαν τους βωμούς του θυμιάματος, που ήσαν πιο ψηλά απ’ αυτά. Κομμάτιασαν τις ξύλινες λατρευτικές στήλες, τα αγάλματα των ειδώλων, τα πελεκητά και τα χυτά· τα κονιορτοποίησε κι έριξε τη σκόνη τους πάνω στους τάφους εκείνων που είχαν θυσιάσει στους ψεύτικους θεούς. 5 Επίσης έκαψε τα οστά των ειδωλολατρών ιερέων πάνω στα θυσιαστήρια που είχαν οι ίδιοι χρησιμοποιήσει.*Βλ. σχετική προφητεία εις Α΄ Βασ 13:2. Έτσι εξαγνίστηκε η περιοχή του βασιλείου του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ. 6 Τα ίδια έκανε ο Ιωσίας στις πλατείες των πόλεων και στις ερημωμένες περιοχές*Το αντίστοιχο εβρ. πρωτότυπο είναι πλήρως ασαφές. των φυλών Μανασσή, Εφραΐμ και Συμεών, μέχρι και τη φυλή Νεφθαλί: 7 Κατέστρεψε τα θυσιαστήρια και τις ξύλινες λατρευτικές στήλες, κονιορτοποίησε τα αγάλματα των ειδώλων και σύντριψε όλους τους βωμούς του θυμιάματος σ’ όλη τη χώρα του Ισραήλ. Μετά γύρισε στην Ιερουσαλήμ.

8 Το δέκατο όγδοο έτος της βασιλείας του ο Ιωσίας, αφού είχε πια εξαγνίσει τη χώρα και το ναό, ανέθεσε στο Σαφάν γιο του Ασαλία, στο Μαασεΐα, κυβερνήτη της πόλης, και στον Ιωάχ, γιο του Ιωάχαζ και υπομνηματογράφο, να πάνε και να επισκευάσουν το ναό του Κυρίου του Θεού του. 9 Αυτοί ήρθαν στον αρχιερέα Χελκία και του έδωσαν τα χρήματα που είχαν προσφερθεί στο ναό του Θεού και τα είχαν συγκεντρώσει οι λευίτες φρουροί της πύλης του ναού. Αυτά προέρχονταν από τις φυλές Μανασσή και Εφραΐμ κι από όλον τον υπόλοιπο Ισραήλ κι επίσης από τις φυλές Ιούδα και Βενιαμίν κι από τους κατοίκους της Ιερουσαλήμ.

10 Αυτά τα χρήματα δόθηκαν στους εργολάβους που επιστατούσαν στις επισκευές του ναού του Κυρίου, κι εκείνοι τα διέθεσαν για να επιδιορθώσουν το ναό και να τον επαναφέρουν στο αρχικό του σχέδιο. 11 Τα έδωσαν στους ξυλουργούς και στους χτίστες, για ν’ αγοράσουν πέτρες πελεκητές και ξύλα για δοκάρια και να επιδιορθώσουν τις οικοδομές, που οι προηγούμενοι βασιλιάδες του Ιούδα είχαν καταστρέψει. 12 Όλοι αυτοί εργάζονταν φιλότιμα για να συντομεύσουν το έργο. Επόπτες τους ήσαν οι λευίτες Ιαχάθ και Αβδίας, απόγονοι του Μεραρί, και οι Ζαχαρίας και Μεσουλλάμ, απόγονοι του Καάθ. Από τους άλλους λευίτες, όσοι γνώριζαν μουσικά όργανα, 13 διηύθυναν τους αχθοφόρους και τους άλλους εργάτες δίνοντας το ρυθμό σε κάθε είδους εργασία. Τέλος, άλλοι λευίτες ήταν γραμματείς, αξιωματούχοι και θυρωροί.

14 Ενώ έβγαζαν τα χρήματα που είχαν προσφερθεί στο ναό του Κυρίου, ο αρχιερέας Χελκίας βρήκε το βιβλίο του νόμου*το βιβλίο του νόμου. Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 22:8. του Κυρίου που είχε παραδοθεί στο λαό από το Μωυσή. 15 Κάλεσε αμέσως το γραμματέα Σαφάν και του είπε: «Βρήκα το βιβλίο του νόμου μέσα στο ναό του Κυρίου», και του το έδωσε. 16 Ο Σαφάν έφερε το βιβλίο στο βασιλιά και συγχρόνως παρουσίασε την αναφορά του: «Οι δούλοι σου κάναμε όλα όσα μας διέταξες» του είπε. 17 «Καταμετρήσαμε τα χρήματα που βρέθηκαν στο ναό του Κυρίου και τα παραδώσαμε στους επόπτες και στους εργάτες». 18 Έπειτα του ανάγγειλε: «Ο αρχιερέας Χελκίας μου έδωσε αυτό το βιβλίο». Κι ο Σαφάν διάβασε από το βιβλίο στο βασιλιά.

19 Μόλις ο βασιλιάς Ιωσίας άκουσε τους λόγους του βιβλίου του νόμου, έσκισε τα ρούχα του.*Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29.20 Έδωσε αμέσως διαταγή στον αρχιερέα Χελκία, στον Αχικάμ γιο του Σαφάν, στον Αχβώρ γιο του Μιχαΐα, στον ίδιο το γραμματέα Σαφάν και στον Ασαΐα, έναν από τους υπασπιστές του βασιλιά: 21 «Πηγαίνετε», τους είπε, «και ρωτήστε τον Κύριο για μένα και γι’ αυτούς που απέμειναν από το λαό του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα, σχετικά με τα λόγια αυτού του βιβλίου που βρήκατε. Πραγματικά, θα πρέπει να είναι μεγάλη η οργή του Κυρίου εναντίον μας, γιατί οι πρόγονοί μας δεν έδωσαν σημασία στο λόγο του Κυρίου και δεν εφάρμοσαν τα γραμμένα σ’ αυτό το βιβλίο».

22 Τότε ο Χελκίας και εκείνοι που ορίστηκαν από το βασιλιά πήγαν και μίλησαν σχετικά στην προφήτισσα Χούλδα, που κατοικούσε στη νέα συνοικία της Ιερουσαλήμ. Αυτή ήταν γυναίκα του Σαλλούμ, του ιματιοφύλακα, γιου του Τικβά κι εγγονού του Αράς. 23,24 Εκείνη τους απάντησε:

«Να πείτε στον άνθρωπο που σας έστειλε σ’ εμένα, ότι ο Κύριος ο Θεός του Ισραήλ λέει: "θα προξενήσω κακό σ’ αυτόν τον τόπο και στους κατοίκους του, πραγματοποιώντας όλες τις κατάρες που είναι γραμμένες στο βιβλίο που διάβασαν μπροστά στο βασιλιά του Ιούδα. 25 Επειδή με εγκατέλειψαν και πρόσφεραν θυμίαμα σ’ άλλους θεούς και με εξόργισαν με τις πράξεις τους, γι’ αυτό θα ξεσπάσει η οργή μου ενάντια σ’ αυτόν τον τόπο, χωρίς και πάλι να ικανοποιηθεί". 26,27 Και στο βασιλιά του Ιούδα, που σας έστειλε να ρωτήσετε τον Κύριο, να του πείτε ότι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ λέει: "εσύ άκουσες προσεκτικά τα λόγια αυτού του βιβλίου. Άκουσες τα όσα είπα εναντίον αυτού του τόπου και των κατοίκων του, ότι θα ερημωθούν και τ’ όνομά τους θα χρησιμοποιείται στις κατάρες. Κι αμέσως μετανόησες και ταπεινώθηκες, έσκισες τα ρούχα σου*Βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 19. και έκλαψες ενώπιόν μου. Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ σε άκουσα. 28 Θα σ’ αφήσω να πεθάνεις ειρηνικά και θα μεταφερθείς στον τάφο σου, χωρίς να δουν τα μάτια σου όλες αυτές τις συμφορές που θα φέρω σ’ αυτόν εδώ τον τόπο και στους κατοίκους του"».

Οι απεσταλμένοι του βασιλιά τού έφεραν την απάντηση. 29 Τότε ο βασιλιάς έστειλε και συγκέντρωσε τους πρεσβυτέρους του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ, 30 κι ανέβηκαν όλοι μαζί στο ναό του Κυρίου: Ο βασιλιάς, ο λαός του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ, μικροί και μεγάλοι, οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες. Εκεί ο βασιλιάς διάβασε μπροστά τους όλους τους λόγους του βιβλίου της διαθήκης, που είχε βρεθεί στο ναό του Κυρίου.

31 Μετά ο βασιλιάς στάθηκε στη θέση του κι έκανε συμφωνία με τον Κύριο· έδωσε υπόσχεση ότι θα τον ακολουθεί και θα τηρεί τις εντολές του, τα προστάγματά του και τους νόμους του με όλη την καρδιά του και την ψυχή του και ότι θα εφαρμόζει όλα όσα είναι γραμμένα σ’ αυτό το βιβλίο της διαθήκης. 32 Επιπλέον υποχρέωσε όλους όσοι βρίσκονταν στην Ιερουσαλήμ και στην περιοχή της φυλής Βενιαμίν να μείνουν πιστοί στη διαθήκη. Από τότε οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ συμμορφώθηκαν με τη διαθήκη του Θεού των προγόνων τους.

33 Ο Ιωσίας εξαφάνισε όλα τα είδωλα των ξένων θεών απ’ όλες τις περιοχές των Ισραηλιτών και υποχρέωσε όλους όσοι βρίσκονταν στο έδαφος του Ισραήλ να λατρεύουν τον Κύριο, το Θεό τους. Κι όσο ζούσε ο Ιωσίας, οι Ισραηλίτες δεν απαρνήθηκαν τον Κύριο, το Θεό των προγόνων τους.

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images. 4 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.*34.4 the images: or, the sun images*34.4 graves: Heb. face of the graves 5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.*34.6 mattocks: or, mauls 7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.*34.7 into…: Heb. to make powder

8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God. 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem. 10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and amend the house: 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.*34.11 to floor: or, to rafter 12 And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick. 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

23 And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me, 24 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah: 25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched. 26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard; 27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD. 28 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
