1 Στην Ιερουσαλήμ, ο λαός του Ιούδα πήρε τον Ιωάχαζ, γιο του Ιωσία, και τον έχρισε βασιλιά στη θέση του πατέρα του. 2 Ο Ιωάχαζ ήταν είκοσι τριών ετών όταν έγινε βασιλιάς, και βασίλεψε μόνο τρεις μήνες στην Ιερουσαλήμ, 3 γιατί ο Φαραώ Νεχώ της Αιγύπτου τον εκθρόνισε από την Ιερουσαλήμ και υποχρέωσε τη χώρα του Ιούδα να του πληρώσει εκατό τάλαντα ασήμι και ένα τάλαντο χρυσάφι. 4 Στη συνέχεια έκανε βασιλιά του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ τον αδερφό του Ιωάχαζ, τον Ελιακίμ, και τον μετονόμασε σε Ιωακίμ. Τον Ιωάχαζ τον πήρε ο Νεχώ μαζί του στην Αίγυπτο.

5 Ο Ιωακίμ ήταν είκοσι πέντε ετών όταν διορίστηκε βασιλιάς και βασίλεψε έντεκα χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Έκανε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο το Θεό του. 6 Ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ, βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας, εισέβαλε στον Ιούδα, έδεσε με αλυσίδες τον Ιωακίμ και τον πήρε στη Βαβυλώνα. 7 Πήρε επίσης μερικά από τα ιερά σκεύη του ναού του Κυρίου και τα μετέφερε στη Βαβυλώνα και τα τοποθέτησε στο παλάτι του.

8 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Ιωακίμ είναι καταχωρισμένη στο Βιβλίο των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα. Εκεί αναφέρονται όλες οι βδελυρές πράξεις του και όσα συνέβηκαν μ’ αυτόν. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του ο Ιωαχίν.

9 Ο Ιωαχίν ήταν δεκαοχτώ ετών όταν έγινε βασιλιάς, και βασίλεψε στην Ιερουσαλήμ τρεις μήνες και δέκα μέρες. Έπραξε κι αυτός ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο. 10 Όταν μπήκε η άνοιξη, έστειλε ο βασιλιάς Ναβουχοδονόσορ και πήρε τον Ιωαχίν αιχμάλωτο στη Βαβυλώνα, μαζί με τα πολύτιμα σκεύη του ναού του Κυρίου, κι έκανε βασιλιά στον Ιούδα και στην Ιερουσαλήμ το Σεδεκία, έναν θείο του Ιωαχίν.

11 Ο Σεδεκίας ήταν είκοσι ενός ετών όταν έγινε βασιλιάς, και βασίλεψε έντεκα χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 12 Έπραξε ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο το Θεό του κι αρνήθηκε ν’ αναγνωρίσει τα σφάλματά του μπροστά στον προφήτη Ιερεμία, ο οποίος μιλούσε εκ μέρους του Κυρίου. 13 Επίσης ο Σεδεκίας επαναστάτησε εναντίον του βασιλιά Ναβουχοδονόσορ, που τον είχε ορκίσει στο Θεό να μείνει πιστός σ’ αυτόν. Αρνήθηκε με πείσμα να επιστρέψει στον Κύριο, το Θεό του Ισραήλ.

14 Επίσης, όλοι οι άρχοντες του Ιούδα, οι ιερείς και ο λαός της χώρας απίστησαν σε μεγάλο βαθμό· έφτασαν να τηρούν τα βδελυρά έθιμα των άλλων εθνών και βεβήλωσαν το ναό του Κυρίου, που ο ίδιος είχε αγιάσει στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 15 Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των προγόνων τους, επειδή αγαπούσε το λαό του και το ναό, τον τόπο της κατοικίας του, τους έστελνε πάντοτε μηνύματα με τους απεσταλμένους του. 16 Αλλά αυτοί περιγελούσαν τους απεσταλμένους του Θεού, περιφρονούσαν τα λόγια τους και ειρωνεύονταν τους προφήτες του. Γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος οργίστηκε τόσο πολύ εναντίον του λαού του, ώστε δεν υπήρχε πια τρόπος σωτηρίας.

17 Ο Κύριος έφερε εναντίον τους το βασιλιά των Βαβυλωνίων και τα παρέδωσε όλα στην εξουσία του. Αυτός κατέσφαξε όλους τους στρατιώτες μέσα στο αγιαστήριο. Δε λυπήθηκε ούτε τους νέους, αγόρια και κορίτσια, ούτε τους γέροντες, ακόμα και τους πολύ ηλικιωμένους. 18 Άρπαξε όλα τα σκεύη του ναού του Κυρίου, μεγάλα και μικρά, κι επίσης τους θησαυρούς του ναού, του βασιλιά και των αρχόντων του, και τα έφερε στη Βαβυλώνα.

19 Οι Βαβυλώνιοι έκαψαν το ναό του Θεού και γκρέμισαν το τείχος της Ιερουσαλήμ· έβαλαν φωτιά σε όλα τα ανάκτορά της και κατάστρεψαν εντελώς όλα τα πολύτιμα αντικείμενα της πόλης. 20 Εκείνους που σώθηκαν από τη σφαγή, τούς μετέφερε στη Βαβυλώνα, όπου έγιναν δούλοι σ’ αυτόν και στους απογόνους του, μέχρις ότου ιδρύθηκε η βασιλεία των Περσών.

21 Έτσι εκπληρώθηκε ο λόγος του Θεού, που είχε πει με τον προφήτη Ιερεμία: «Η χώρα θα ερημωθεί για εβδομήντα χρόνια, μέχρι να συμπληρώσει τα σαββατικά έτη που δεν είχε τηρήσει».*Στο Ισραήλ, κατά το Λευ 25:1-7, κάθε εφτά χρόνια η γη έπρεπε να αφήνεται ακαλλιέργητη επί ένα χρόνο (αγρανάπαυση), κάτι όμως που δεν ετηρείτο σχολαστικά. Εδώ εν προκειμένω γίνεται συνδυασμός στοιχείων που απαντώνται στο Λευ 26:34-35 και στο Ιερ 25:11.

22 Το πρώτο έτος της βασιλείας του Κύρου, βασιλιά των Περσών, ο Κύριος πραγματοποίησε αυτό που είχε αναγγείλει με τον προφήτη Ιερεμία. Έβαλε στο νου του Κύρου την ιδέα να στείλει σ’ όλο το βασίλειό του προφορική και γραπτή διακήρυξη με το ακόλουθο περιεχόμενο:

23 «Ο Κύρος, βασιλιάς της Περσίας, λέει: Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του ουρανού, έδωσε σ’ εμένα όλα τα βασίλεια της γης και με πρόσταξε να του χτίσω έναν ναό στην Ιερουσαλήμ, στην Ιουδαία. Όποιος από σας ανήκει στο λαό του, ας επιστρέψει εκεί. Κι ο Κύριος ο Θεός του ας είναι μαζί του».

1 Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s stead in Jerusalem. 2 Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. 3 And the king of Egypt put him down at Jerusalem, and condemned the land in an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.*36.3 put…: Heb. removed him 4 And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.

5 Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God. 6 Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.*36.6 fetters: or, chains 7 Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon. 8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.*36.8 Jehoiachin: also called, Jeconiah, or, Coniah

9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD. 10 And when the year was expired, king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.*36.10 when…: Heb. at the return of the year*36.10 goodly…: Heb. vessels of desire*36.10 Zedekiah…: or, Mattaniah, his father’s brother

11 Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. 12 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD. 13 And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the LORD God of Israel.

14 Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. 15 And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:*36.15 by: Heb. by the hand of*36.15 betimes: that is, continually and carefully 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.*36.16 remedy: Heb. healing 17 Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand. 18 And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon. 19 And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. 20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:*36.20 them…: Heb. the remainder from the sword 21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, 23 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
