1 Ο Άχαζ έγινε βασιλιάς σε ηλικία είκοσι ετών και βασίλεψε δεκαέξι χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Δεν έκανε όμως το σωστό ενώπιον του Κυρίου, όπως είχε κάνει ο Δαβίδ ο πρόγονός του. 2 Ακολούθησε το κακό παράδειγμα των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ. Κατασκεύασε είδωλα από χυτό μέταλλο για να λατρεύει τους θεούς των Χαναναίων 3 και θυμίασε στην κοιλάδα Εννόμ·*κοιλάδα Εννόμ. Βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 23:10. επίσης πρόσφερε τους γιους του ολοκαύτωμα στα είδωλα σύμφωνα με τα βδελυρά έθιμα των εθνών εκείνων, που ο Κύριος τα είχε διώξει από τη χώρα τους για να κατοικήσουν οι Ισραηλίτες. 4 Επίσης πρόσφερε θυσίες και θυμιάματα στους ιερούς τόπους πάνω στους λόφους, κάτω από τις σκιές των δέντρων.

5 Γι’ αυτό κι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του, τον παρέδωσε στην εξουσία των εχθρών του: Τον νίκησε ο βασιλιάς των Συρίων· οι Σύριοι πήραν πολλούς αιχμαλώτους και τους έφεραν στη Δαμασκό. Επίσης τον νίκησε ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ Φεκάχ, γιος του Ρεμαλία, ο οποίος με μεγάλη σφαγή 6 εξόντωσε σε μία μέρα εκατόν είκοσι χιλιάδες άντρες του Ιούδα, που ήταν όλοι γενναίοι πολεμιστές. Αυτό συνέβη επειδή ο λαός του Ιούδα εγκατέλειψαν τον Κύριο το Θεό των προγόνων τους. 7 Ο Ζιχρί, ένας Εφραϊμίτης ήρωας, σκότωσε το Μαασεΐα, γιο του βασιλιά,*γιο του βασιλιά. Βλ. υποσ. εις Α΄ Βασ 22:26. τον Αζρικάμ, αρχηγό του παλατιού και τον Ελκανά, δεύτερον μετά το βασιλιά. 8 Ο στρατός του Ισραήλ συνέλαβε από το λαό του Ιούδα διακόσιες χιλιάδες αιχμαλώτους, γυναίκες και παιδιά· πήραν ακόμη πολλά λάφυρα και τα έφεραν όλα στη Σαμάρεια.

9 Στη Σαμάρεια ήταν ένας προφήτης του Κυρίου, που ονομαζόταν Ωδήδ. Αυτός συνάντησε το στράτευμα που κατευθυνόταν στην πόλη και τους είπε: «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των προγόνων σας, από το θυμό του εναντίον του Ιούδα, τους παρέδωσε όλους αυτούς στην εξουσία σας. Αλλά εσείς τους σφάξατε με μανία τέτοια, που ο απόηχός της έφτασε μέχρι τον ουρανό. 10 Και τώρα σκεφτόσαστε να υποτάξετε το λαό του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ για να τους έχετε δούλους σας. Εσείς δεν αμαρτάνετε ενάντια στον Κύριο το Θεό σας; 11 Τώρα, λοιπόν, ακούστε με και επιστρέψτε τους αιχμαλώτους που συλλάβατε από τους συμπατριώτες σας, γιατί ο φοβερός θυμός του Κυρίου έρχεται κατά πάνω σας».

12 Τότε, μερικοί από τους αρχηγούς των Εφραϊμιτών, ο Αζαρίας γιος του Ιωχανάν, ο Βαραχίας γιος του Μεσιλλεμώθ, ο Εζεκίας γιος του Σαλλούμ και ο Αμασά γιος του Χαλδαΐ, ξεσηκώθηκαν εναντίον αυτών που έρχονταν από την εκστρατεία: 13 «Δε θα φέρετε εδώ τους αιχμαλώτους!» τους είπαν. «Αρκετά μεγάλη είναι η αμαρτία μας ενώπιον του Κυρίου και ο θυμός του φοβερός εναντίον του Ισραήλ. Γιατί θέλετε να προσθέσουμε κι άλλες αμαρτίες σ’ αυτές που ήδη έχουμε διαπράξει;»

14 Έτσι, μπροστά στους άρχοντες και σ’ όλη τη συγκέντρωση οι πολεμιστές άφησαν ελεύθερους τους αιχμαλώτους κι επίσης εγκατέλειψαν τα λάφυρα. 15 Ορίστηκαν ονομαστικά άντρες, οι οποίοι ανέλαβαν τους αιχμαλώτους και έντυσαν με ρούχα από τα λάφυρα όσους ήταν γυμνοί. Τους έβαλαν υποδήματα, τους έδωσαν να φάνε και να πιουν και τους άλειψαν με λάδι. Όσους ήταν εξαντλημένοι τους ανέβασαν στα γαϊδούρια και τους μετέφεραν στους συγγενείς τους στην Ιεριχώ, την πόλη με τις φοινικιές. Έπειτα οι Ισραηλίτες επέστρεψαν στην Σαμάρεια.

16 Εκείνο τον καιρό ο βασιλιάς Άχαζ ζήτησε βοήθεια από το βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας, 17 γιατί οι Εδωμίτες ήρθαν πάλι και επιτεθήκαν στο λαό του Ιούδα και πήραν αιχμαλώτους. 18 Την ίδια εποχή οι Φιλισταίοι όρμησαν στις πόλεις της πεδινής και νότιας χώρας του Ιούδα και κυρίεψαν τη Βαιθ-Σεμές, την Αϊλών και τη Γεδηρώθ. Επίσης κατέλαβαν τις πόλεις Σοχώ, Τιμνά και Γιμζώ με τα περίχωρά τους και εγκαταστάθηκαν σ’ αυτές. 19 Ο Κύριος ταπείνωσε το λαό του Ιούδα εξαιτίας του βασιλιά του Ιούδα*Το εβρ. έχει «Ισραήλ». Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 17:1. Άχαζ, ο οποίος τους έκανε ν’ αμαρτήσουν, αλλά κι ο ίδιος προσωπικά πρόσβαλε κατάφωρα τον Κύριο.

20 Ο Τιγλάθ-Πιλέσερ, βασιλιάς της Ασσυρίας, αντί να βοηθήσει τον Άχαζ, επιτέθηκε εναντίον του και τον έφερε σε απελπιστική θέση. 21 Τότε, ο Άχαζ αναγκάστηκε ν’ αφαιρέσει μέρος από τους θησαυρούς του ναού του Κυρίου, του βασιλικού ανακτόρου και των αρχόντων του και να τα δώσει στο βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας, ο οποίος όμως τελικά δεν τον βοήθησε.

22 Τον καιρό της απελπισίας του ο βασιλιάς Άχαζ ασέβησε ακόμα περισσότερο στον Κύριο: 23 Θυσίαζε στους θεούς της Δαμασκού, μολονότι αυτοί τον είχαν νικήσει. «Αυτοί οι θεοί», έλεγε, «των Συρίων βασιλιάδων, βοηθάνε τους λαούς τους. Θα θυσιάσω, λοιπόν, κι εγώ σ’ αυτούς, για να με βοηθήσουν». Αυτοί όμως έγιναν η καταστροφή του ίδιου και του λαού του. 24 Επιπλέον ο Άχαζ συγκέντρωσε τα ιερά σκεύη του ναού, τα κομμάτιασε και σφράγισε τις πόρτες του ναού του Κυρίου. Στη συνέχεια διέταξε και κατασκεύασαν θυσιαστήρια σε κάθε γωνιά στους δρόμους της Ιερουσαλήμ. 25 Σε κάθε πόλη του Ιούδα καθιέρωσε ιερούς τόπους για να θυμιάζει στους ξένους θεούς και εξόργισε έτσι τον Κύριο, το Θεό των προγόνων του.

26 Η υπόλοιπη ιστορία του Άχαζ, από την αρχή ως το τέλος, είναι καταχωρισμένη στο βιβλίο των βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα και του Ισραήλ. Εκεί αναφέρονται όλα τα έργα του. 27 Όταν πέθανε, τον έθαψαν στην πόλη της Ιερουσαλήμ· δεν τον έφεραν όμως στους τάφους των βασιλιάδων του Ισραήλ. Στο θρόνο τον διαδέχτηκε ο γιος του ο Εζεκίας.

16 At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him. 17 For again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah, and carried away captives.*28.17 captives: Heb. a captivity 18 The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there. 19 For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and transgressed sore against the LORD. 20 And Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not. 21 For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.

22 And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the LORD: this is that king Ahaz. 23 For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. 26 Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
