1 Ο Εζεκίας έγινε βασιλιάς σε ηλικία είκοσι πέντε ετών και βασίλεψε είκοσι εννιά χρόνια στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η μητέρα του ονομαζόταν Αβιά και ήταν κόρη του Ζαχαρία. 2 Αυτός έπραξε το σωστό ενώπιον του Κυρίου, όπως ακριβώς είχε κάνει ο Δαβίδ, ο πρόγονός του.

3 Τον πρώτο μήνα του πρώτου έτους της βασιλείας του, άνοιξε τις πόρτες του ναού του Κυρίου και τις επισκεύασε. 4 Έπειτα κάλεσε τους ιερείς και τους λευίτες και τους συγκέντρωσε στην ανατολική αυλή του ναού.

5 «Ακούστε με, λευίτες!» τους είπε, «εξαγνιστείτε τώρα κι εξαγνίστε και το ναό του Κυρίου, του Θεού των προγόνων σας· πετάξτε μακριά κάθε μιαρό αντικείμενο. 6 Οι πατεράδες μας ασέβησαν και έπραξαν ό,τι δυσαρεστεί τον Κύριο το Θεό μας. Τον εγκατέλειψαν, αδιαφόρησαν για την κατοικία του και του γύρισαν τα νώτα. 7 Σφράγισαν ακόμη και τις πόρτες του ναού, έσβησαν τους λύχνους και δε θυμίαζαν ούτε πρόσφεραν πια ολοκαυτώματα στο αγιαστήριο του Θεού του λαού Ισραήλ. 8 Γι’ αυτό ξέσπασε η οργή του Κυρίου ενάντια στο λαό του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ, και τους έκανε ώστε όσοι τους βλέπουν να τρομάζουν, να νιώθουν φρίκη και να τους χλευάζουν, όπως κι εσείς το βλέπετε με τα ίδια σας τα μάτια. 9 Γι’ αυτό οι πατεράδες σας σκοτώθηκαν στον πόλεμο και οι γυναίκες μας και τα παιδιά μας σύρθηκαν στην αιχμαλωσία. 10 Τώρα, λοιπόν, θέλω να κάνω διαθήκη με τον Κύριο, το Θεό του Ισραήλ, για να πάψει να είναι οργισμένος μαζί μας. 11 Μη δείξετε αδιαφορία, παιδιά μου, γιατί εσάς διάλεξε ο Κύριος να στέκεστε ενώπιόν του, έτοιμοι να τον υπηρετείτε ως λειτουργοί του και να του προσφέρετε θυμίαμα».

12 Τότε σηκώθηκαν μπροστά οι παρακάτω λευίτες: Από τους απογόνους των Κααθιτών: οι Μαχάθ, γιος του Αμασαΐ και Ιωήλ, γιος του Αζαρία· από τους απογόνους των Μεραριτών: οι Κις, γιος του Αβδί και Αζαρίας, γιος του Ιαλλελεήλ· από τους απογόνους των Γηρσωνιτών: οι Ιωάχ, γιος του Ζιμμά και Εδέν, γιος του Ιωάχ. 13 Από τους απογόνους του Ελισαφάν: οι Σιμρί και Ιεϊήλ· από τους απογόνους του Ασάφ: οι Ζαχαρίας και Ματανίας· 14 από τους απογόνους του Αιμάν: οι Ιεχιήλ και Σιμεΐ· από τους απογόνους του Ιεδουθούν: οι Σεμαΐας και Ουζζιήλ.

15 Αυτοί συγκέντρωσαν τα μέλη των αντίστοιχων συγγενειών τους και αφού εξαγνίστηκαν όλοι, πήγαν να εξαγνίσουν το ναό του Κυρίου με διαταγή του βασιλιά, σύμφωνα με τους λόγους του Κυρίου. 16 Οι ιερείς μπήκαν στο ναό για να εξαγνίσουν το εσωτερικό του. Αφού έβγαλαν έξω στην αυλή του ναού όλα τα μιαρά αντικείμενα που βρήκαν, τα πήραν οι λευίτες και τα μετέφεραν έξω από την πόλη, στο χείμαρρο των Κέδρων. 17 Την πρώτη μέρα του πρώτου μήνα άρχισαν τον εξαγνισμό του ναού του Κυρίου και την όγδοη μέρα έφτασαν στον πρόναο. Έτσι, ολοκλήρωσαν την κάθαρση σε οχτώ ημέρες· τη δέκατη έκτη του πρώτου μήνα είχαν τελειώσει.

18 Έπειτα οι λευίτες ήρθαν στα ανάκτορα, παρουσιάστηκαν στο βασιλιά Εζεκία και του είπαν: «Εξαγνίσαμε όλο το ναό του Κυρίου, το θυσιαστήριο του ολοκαυτώματος κι όλα τα σκεύη του, την τράπεζα της προθέσεως και όλα τα σκεύη της. 19 Όλα τα σκεύη που είχε μολύνει ο ασεβής βασιλιάς Άχαζ την εποχή της βασιλείας του, τα αγιάσαμε και είναι έτοιμα. Βρίσκονται τώρα τοποθετημένα μπροστά στο θυσιαστήριο του Κυρίου».

20 Την άλλη μέρα το πρωί σηκώθηκε ο βασιλιάς Εζεκίας, συγκέντρωσε τους άρχοντες της πόλης και ανέβηκε στο ναό του Κυρίου. 21 Έφεραν να θυσιάσουν εφτά βόδια, εφτά κριάρια, εφτά αρνιά κι εφτά τράγους, για να επιτύχουν την εξιλέωση της αμαρτίας στη βασιλική οικογένεια, στο αγιαστήριο και στο λαό του Ιούδα. Ο βασιλιάς διέταξε τους ιερείς, τους απογόνους του Ααρών, να προσφέρουν τις θυσίες στο θυσιαστήριο του Κυρίου. 22 Οι ιερείς έσφαξαν τα βόδια και με το αίμα τους ράντισαν το θυσιαστήριο· μετά έσφαξαν τα κριάρια και τα αρνιά και κάθε φορά ράντιζαν με το αίμα τους το θυσιαστήριο. 23 Τέλος έφεραν μπροστά στο βασιλιά και στη συγκέντρωση τους τράγους για τη θυσία εξιλέωσης· ο βασιλιάς και οι συγκεντρωμένοι έβαλαν τα χέρια τους πάνω σ’ αυτούς. 24 Οι ιερείς τούς έσφαξαν και έχυσαν το αίμα τους στο θυσιαστήριο για να επιτύχουν την εξιλέωση της αμαρτίας όλου του λαού. Ο βασιλιάς είχε διατάξει να προσφερθεί το ολοκαύτωμα και η θυσία εξιλέωσης για λογαριασμό όλου του λαού.

25 Έπειτα ο βασιλιάς τοποθέτησε τους λευίτες στο ναό του Κυρίου με κύμβαλα, με άρπες και με κιθάρες, όπως τα είχε καθιερώσει ο Δαβίδ και οι Βλέποντες του βασιλιά Γαδ και Νάθαν, οι οποίοι ως προφήτες του Κυρίου είχαν μεταβιβάσει σχετική εντολή του. 26 Οι λευίτες πήραν θέσεις κρατώντας τα μουσικά όργανα, που είχαν κατασκευαστεί επί Δαβίδ, και οι ιερείς κρατώντας σάλπιγγες. 27 Ο Εζεκίας διέταξε να προσφέρουν το ολοκαύτωμα στο θυσιαστήριο· κι όταν άρχισε η προσφορά του ολοκαυτώματος, άρχισαν οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες να ψάλλουν προς τιμήν του Κυρίου με τη συνοδεία των σαλπίγγων και των μουσικών οργάνων του Δαβίδ, βασιλιά των Ισραηλιτών. 28 Τότε όλη η σύναξη προσκύνησε, ενώ οι ψάλτες έψαλλαν και οι σαλπιγκτές σάλπιζαν. Αυτό συνεχίστηκε μέχρις ότου τέλειωσε το ολοκαύτωμα. 29 Μετά ο βασιλιάς και όλοι οι παρευρισκόμενοι έσκυψαν και προσκύνησαν. 30 Ο βασιλιάς Εζεκίας και οι άρχοντες παρότρυναν τους λευίτες να συνεχίσουν να ψάλλουν στον Κύριο τους ψαλμούς του Δαβίδ και του Ασάφ, του Βλέποντος.

Έτσι, αφού έψαλαν με χαρά, έσκυψαν όλοι τα κεφάλια τους και προσκύνησαν το Θεό.

31 Τότε, ο βασιλιάς πήρε το λόγο και είπε στο λαό: «Τώρα που έχετε εξαγνιστεί ενώπιον του Κυρίου, πλησιάστε να προσφέρετε θυσίες κι ευχαριστήριες προσφορές στο ναό του Κυρίου». Έτσι όλοι οι συγκεντρωμένοι άρχισαν να προσφέρουν θυσίες και ευχαριστήριες προσφορές· κι αν κανένας ήθελε, πρόσφερε και ολοκαυτώματα. 32 Ο αριθμός των ολοκαυτωμάτων που πρόσφερε η σύναξη στον Κύριο ήταν εβδομήντα βόδια, εκατό κριάρια και διακόσια αρνιά. 33 Τα ζώα που προσφέρθηκαν για τις άλλες θυσίες ήταν εξακόσια βόδια και τρεις χιλιάδες πρόβατα. 34 Οι ιερείς όμως ήταν λίγοι και δεν προλάβαιναν να γδέρνουν όλα τα ζώα που προορίζονταν για τα ολοκαυτώματα· γι’ αυτό οι συγγενείς τους λευίτες τους βοήθησαν μέχρις ότου τελείωσε το έργο και μέχρις ότου εξαγνίστηκαν και άλλοι ιερείς· οι λευίτες ήταν πιο πρόθυμοι να εξαγνιστούν παρά οι ιερείς. 35 Ακόμα, εκτός του μεγάλου αριθμού των ολοκαυτωμάτων, προσφέρθηκαν και τα παχειά μέρη των θυσιών κοινωνίας και οι σπονδές για κάθε ολοκαύτωμα.

Έτσι ξανάρχισε η λατρεία στο ναό του Κυρίου. 36 Ο Εζεκίας κι όλος ο λαός ήταν πανευτυχείς για τα όσα είχε κάνει γι’ αυτούς ο Θεός, και γιατί οι μεταρρυθμίσεις αυτές είχαν γίνει χωρίς καθυστέρηση.

1 Hezekiah began to reign when he was five and twenty years old, and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.

12 Then the Levites arose, Mahath the son of Amasai, and Joel the son of Azariah, of the sons of the Kohathites: and of the sons of Merari, Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of Jehalelel: and of the Gershonites; Joah the son of Zimmah, and Eden the son of Joah: 13 And of the sons of Elizaphan; Shimri, and Jeiel: and of the sons of Asaph; Zechariah, and Mattaniah: 14 And of the sons of Heman; Jehiel, and Shimei: and of the sons of Jeduthun; Shemaiah, and Uzziel. 15 And they gathered their brethren, and sanctified themselves, and came, according to the commandment of the king, by the words of the LORD, to cleanse the house of the LORD.*29.15 by the words…: or, in the business of the LORD 16 And the priests went into the inner part of the house of the LORD, to cleanse it, and brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the temple of the LORD into the court of the house of the LORD. And the Levites took it, to carry it out abroad into the brook Kidron. 17 Now they began on the first day of the first month to sanctify, and on the eighth day of the month came they to the porch of the LORD: so they sanctified the house of the LORD in eight days; and in the sixteenth day of the first month they made an end. 18 Then they went in to Hezekiah the king, and said, We have cleansed all the house of the LORD, and the altar of burnt offering, with all the vessels thereof, and the shewbread table, with all the vessels thereof. 19 Moreover all the vessels, which king Ahaz in his reign did cast away in his transgression, have we prepared and sanctified, and, behold, they are before the altar of the LORD.

20 Then Hezekiah the king rose early, and gathered the rulers of the city, and went up to the house of the LORD. 21 And they brought seven bullocks, and seven rams, and seven lambs, and seven he goats, for a sin offering for the kingdom, and for the sanctuary, and for Judah. And he commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer them on the altar of the LORD. 22 So they killed the bullocks, and the priests received the blood, and sprinkled it on the altar: likewise, when they had killed the rams, they sprinkled the blood upon the altar: they killed also the lambs, and they sprinkled the blood upon the altar. 23 And they brought forth the he goats for the sin offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid their hands upon them:*29.23 forth: Heb. near 24 And the priests killed them, and they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, to make an atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel. 25 And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king’s seer, and Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.*29.25 commandment of the LORD: Heb. commandment by the hand of the LORD*29.25 by: Heb. by the hand of 26 And the Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. 27 And Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering upon the altar. And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped. 31 Then Hezekiah answered and said, Now ye have consecrated yourselves unto the LORD, come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD. And the congregation brought in sacrifices and thank offerings; and as many as were of a free heart burnt offerings.*29.31 consecrated…: or, filled your hand 32 And the number of the burnt offerings, which the congregation brought, was threescore and ten bullocks, an hundred rams, and two hundred lambs: all these were for a burnt offering to the LORD. 33 And the consecrated things were six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep. 34 But the priests were too few, so that they could not flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify themselves than the priests.*29.34 did help…: Heb. strengthened them 35 And also the burnt offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and the drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of the house of the LORD was set in order. 36 And Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
