1,2 Ο προφήτης Ιερεμίας έστειλε επιστολή από την Ιερουσαλήμ προς τους υπόλοιπους από τους πρεσβυτέρους, τους ιερείς, τους προφήτες και σ’ όλον το λαό, που ο Ναβουχοδονόσορ τους είχε φέρει αιχμαλώτους από την Ιερουσαλήμ στη Βαβυλώνα. Η επιστολή αυτή γράφτηκε μετά που ο βασιλιάς των Βαβυλωνίων είχε εκτοπίσει από την Ιερουσαλήμ στη Βαβυλώνα το βασιλιά Ιωαχίν, τη βασιλομήτορα, τους αξιωματούχους και τους αρχηγούς του βασιλείου του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ, καθώς και όλους τους τεχνίτες και τους κατασκευαστές των οχυρωματικών έργων. 3 Ο Ιερεμίας έστειλε την επιστολή με τον Ελασά, γιο του Σαφάν, και το Γεμαρία, γιο του Χελκία, τους οποίους ο βασιλιάς του Ιούδα Σεδεκίας είχε στείλει πρεσβευτές στο βασιλιά Ναβουχοδονόσορ στη Βαβυλώνα. Το κείμενο της επιστολής είναι το ακόλουθο:

4 Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει σε όλους εκείνους που οδηγήθηκαν αιχμάλωτοι από την Ιερουσαλήμ στη Βαβυλώνα:

5 «Χτίστε σπίτια και κατοικήστε σ’ αυτά· φυτέψτε κήπους και φάτε τους καρπούς τους. 6 Παντρευτείτε και αποχτήστε παιδιά. Παντρέψτε τους γιους σας και τις κόρες σας, για ν’ αποχτήσουν κι εκείνοι παιδιά και πολλαπλασιαστείτε εκεί· μη συρρικνωθείτε. 7 Επιδιώξτε την ευημερία της πόλης στην οποία σας οδήγησα αιχμαλώτους και προσευχηθείτε σ’ εμένα γι’ αυτήν, γιατί όταν ευημερεί αυτή ευημερείτε κι εσείς.

8 »Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "μην αφήνετε να σας εξαπατούν οι προφήτες σας που είναι ανάμεσά σας, ούτε οι μάντεις σας· μη δίνετε προσοχή στα όνειρα που βλέπετε. 9 Αυτοί σας προφητεύουν ψέματα, προσποιούμενοι ότι μιλούν εξ ονόματός μου. Δεν τους έχω στείλει εγώ. 10 Εγώ ο Κύριος σας λέω ότι, αφού συμπληρωθούν εβδομήντα χρόνια*εβδομήντα χρόνια. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 25:11. στη Βαβυλώνα, θα φροντίσω για σας· θα εκπληρώσω την υποχρέωσή μου και θα σας επαναφέρω στον τόπο σας. 11 Ξέρω πολύ καλά τα σχέδια που έχω κάνει για σας. Θέλω την ευημερία σας και όχι την καταστροφή σας· θέλω να σας χαρίσω το μέλλον που εσείς ελπίζετε. 12 Αν με επικαλεστείτε και έρθετε να προσευχηθείτε σ’ εμένα, εγώ θα σας ακούσω. 13 Αν με ζητήσετε θα με βρείτε, φτάνει να με αναζητήσετε με όλη σας την καρδιά. 14 Θα με βρείτε και θα αλλάξω την κατάστασή σας· θα σας συγκεντρώσω απ’ όλα τα έθνη και τις χώρες όπου σας διασκόρπισα και θα σας φέρω πίσω στον τόπο απ’ όπου σας οδήγησα στην αιχμαλωσία. Εγώ το λέω, ο Κύριος".

15 »Ισχυρίζεστε ότι ο Κύριος σας έδωσε προφήτες στη Βαβυλώνα. 16 Μάθετε όμως το λόγο του σχετικά με το βασιλιά που κάθεται στο θρόνο του Δαβίδ*με το βασιλιά... Δαβίδ. Πρόκειται για το βασιλιά Σεδεκία. και με όλον το λαό που κατοικεί σ’ αυτή την πόλη, δηλαδή τα αδέρφια σας που δεν αιχμαλωτίστηκαν μαζί σας: 17,18 "Θα στείλω πάνω τους πόλεμο, πείνα και ασθένειες", λέει ο Κύριος, "και θα τους κάνω σαν τα χαλασμένα σύκα, που δεν τρώγονται. Θα τους διασκορπίσω σε όλα τα βασίλεια της γης κι όσοι θα τους βλέπουν θα τρομάζουν, θα τους χλευάζουν, θα τους ντροπιάζουν και θα τους καταριούνται. 19 Αυτό θα συμβεί επειδή δεν άκουσαν τα λόγια μου. Τους μιλούσα επανειλημμένα με τους δούλους μου τους προφήτες αλλά αυτοί δεν άκουγαν. 20 Ακούστε λοιπόν τώρα τα λόγια μου, όλοι εσείς που σας οδήγησα αιχμαλώτους από την Ιερουσαλήμ στη Βαβυλώνα".

21 »Σχετικά με τον Άχαβ, γιο του Κολαΐα, και το Σεδεκία, γιο του Μαασεΐα, που σας προφητεύουν ψέματα προσποιούμενοι ότι μιλούν εξ ονόματος του Κυρίου, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέει: "θα τους παραδώσω στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ, και θα τους θανατώσει μπροστά σας. 22 Όταν αυτοί που οδηγήθηκαν αιχμάλωτοι από το βασίλειο του Ιούδα στη Βαβυλώνα, θα θέλουν να καταραστούν κάποιον, θα λένε: Ο Κύριος να σε κάνει όπως το Σεδεκία και τον Άχαβ, που τους έψησε ζωντανούς ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας. 23 Κι αυτό θα γίνει επειδή έκαναν πράξεις που ντρόπιασαν το λαό του Ισραήλ: Μοίχευαν με τις γυναίκες των συμπατριωτών τους κι έλεγαν ψέματα, προσποιούμενοι ότι μιλούν εξ ονόματός μου, ενώ εγώ τίποτα δεν τους είχα διατάξει να πουν. Εγώ τα ξέρω όλα αυτά και είμαι μάρτυρας για όλα", λέει ο Κύριος».

24,25 Ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, έδωσε στον Ιερεμία μήνυμα σχετικά με το Σεμαΐα το Νεχελαμίτη. Αυτός είχε στείλει στον ιερέα Σοφονία, γιο του Μαασεΐα, επιστολή που την υπέγραφε ο ίδιος, κι απευθυνόταν επίσης και σε όλους τους ιερείς και στο λαό της Ιερουσαλήμ. Η επιστολή έλεγε:

26 «Σοφονία, ο Κύριος σε έκανε ιερέα στη θέση του ιερέα Ιωδαέ, για να είσαι υπεύθυνος για το ναό και να βάλεις σιδερένια αλυσίδα γύρω από το λαιμό τού κάθε μανιακού, που προσποιείται τον προφήτη. 27 Τώρα, λοιπόν, γιατί δεν έλεγξες τον Ιερεμία από την Αναθώθ, που σας κάνει τον προφήτη; 28 Αυτός μας έστειλε ακόμα και επιστολή στη Βαβυλώνα και μας έλεγε ότι η αιχμαλωσία θα διαρκέσει πολύ, γι’ αυτό να χτίσουμε σπίτια και να εγκατασταθούμε εκεί, να φυτέψουμε κήπους και να φάμε τους καρπούς τους».

29 Ο ιερέας Σοφονίας διάβασε την επιστολή αυτή στον προφήτη Ιερεμία. 30 Τότε ο Κύριος είπε στον Ιερεμία: 31 «Στείλε ειδοποίηση σ’ όλους τους αιχμαλώτους και πες τους τι έχω αποφασίσει εγώ ο Κύριος σχετικά με το Σεμαΐα: "αυτός σας είπε προφητείες, ενώ εγώ δεν τον είχα στείλει, και σας έκανε να πιστεύετε σε ψέματα. 32 Γι’ αυτό θα τιμωρήσω το Σεμαΐα το Νεχελαμίτη και τους απογόνους του· δε θα έχει απογόνους να κατοικούν ανάμεσα στο λαό αυτόν και δε θα δει το καλό που θα κάνω εγώ στο λαό μου, επειδή επαναστάτησε εναντίον μου. Εγώ ο Κύριος το λέω"».

1 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon; 2 (After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)*29.2 eunuchs: or, chamberlains 3 By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying, 4 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon; 5 Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; 6 Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished. 7 And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. 9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.*29.9 falsely: Heb. in a lie

10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.*29.11 expected…: Heb. end and expectation 12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. 13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. 14 And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

15 Because ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon; 16 Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity; 17 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil. 18 And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:*29.18 to be a curse: Heb. for a curse 19 Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD.

20 Hear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon: 21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes; 22 And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire; 23 Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours’ wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the LORD.

24 Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,*29.24 Nehelamite: or, dreamer 25 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying, 26 The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks. 27 Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you? 28 For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. 29 And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

30 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, 31 Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie: 32 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD.*29.32 rebellion: Heb. revolt
