1 Τον καιρό που ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ, μαζί με το στρατό του που υποστηριζόταν με στρατεύματα απ’ όλα τα βασίλεια της γης που ήταν υποταγμένα σ’ αυτόν, πολεμούσε ενάντια στην Ιερουσαλήμ και στις γύρω πόλεις, ήρθε στον Ιερεμία μήνυμα από τον Κύριο: 2 Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ του είπε: «Πήγαινε να πεις εκ μέρους μου στο βασιλιά του Ιούδα Σεδεκία: "θα παραδώσω την πόλη αυτή στα χέρια του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας και θα την κάψει. 3 Εσύ δεν θα μπορέσεις να του ξεφύγεις. Θα συλληφθείς εξάπαντος και θα παραδοθείς σ’ αυτόν. Θα λογοδοτήσεις μπροστά του αυτοπροσώπως και μετά θα μεταφερθείς στη Βαβυλώνα. 4 Άκουσε όμως, τι λέει ο Κύριος για σένα, Σεδεκία, βασιλιά του Ιούδα: Δε θα πεθάνεις με βίαιο θάνατο 5 αλλά ειρηνικά. Και όπως έκαψαν λιβάνι στους πριν από σένα βασιλιάδες, έτσι θα κάψουν και για σένα και θα σε κλάψουν λέγοντας: Αλίμονο, άρχοντά μας! Εγώ το λέω, ο Κύριος"».

6 Ο προφήτης Ιερεμίας μετέφερε το μήνυμα στο Σεδεκία, στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 7 Εκείνο τον καιρό ο στρατός του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας πολεμούσε ενάντια στην Ιερουσαλήμ, και ενάντια στη Λαχίς και την Αζηκά, γιατί μόνον αυτές από τις οχυρωμένες πόλεις του Ιούδα δεν είχαν ακόμα κυριευθεί και αντιστέκονταν.

8 Άλλο ένα μήνυμα του Κυρίου προς τον Ιερεμία. Ο βασιλιάς Σεδεκίας είχε κάνει συμφωνία με το λαό της Ιερουσαλήμ να αναγγείλει την απελευθέρωση των δούλων. 9 Καθένας έπρεπε να απελευθερώσει τον Εβραίο δούλο ή δούλη του, ώστε κανείς να μην έχει πια δούλο Ιουδαίο συμπατριώτη του.*Καθένας... συμπατριώτη του. Υπό την πίεση των περιστάσεων αποφάσισαν να κάνουν αυτό που ήταν υποχρεωμένοι από το νόμο να κάνουν κάθε 7 χρόνια (βλ. κεφ. 9:14· Εξοδ 21:2-4).10 Όλοι οι άρχοντες και ο λαός δέχτηκαν τότε τη συμφωνία και απελευθέρωσαν τους δούλους και τις δούλες τους. 11 Αργότερα όμως άλλαξαν γνώμη, τους πήραν πίσω και τους υποχρέωσαν να ξαναγίνουν δούλοι. 12 Τότε ο Κύριος διέταξε τον Ιερεμία να πει στους κατοίκους της Ιερουσαλήμ:

13 «Ο Θεός του Ισραήλ λέει: "έκανα μαζί με τους προγόνους σας διαθήκη όταν τους έβγαλα από την Αίγυπτο, όπου ζούσαν ως δούλοι και τους όρισα: 14 Κάθε έβδομο έτος καθένας σας θα απελευθερώνει τον Εβραίο συμπατριώτη του, που τον είχε αγοράσει για δούλο*που... δούλο. Αυτή η πράξη λάμβανε χώρα όταν κάποιος αδυνατούσε να εξοφλήσει το χρέος του: Πουλούσε τον εαυτό του στο δανειστή για δούλο (βλ. Λευ 25:39-46). και τον κράτησε στη δούλεψή του έξι χρόνια· θα τον αφήνετε να φεύγει ελεύθερος. Οι πρόγονοί σας όμως δε με άκουσαν ούτε έδωσαν καμιά προσοχή στα λόγια μου. 15 Εσείς, αντίθετα, μετανιώσατε και καλά κάνατε, όταν καθένας σας απελευθέρωσε τον συμπατριώτη του και κάνατε μάλιστα επίσημη συμφωνία στο ναό που φέρει το όνομά μου. 16 Τώρα όμως αλλάξατε πάλι γνώμη, χωρίς να με λογαριάσετε· πήρατε πίσω ο καθένας σας το δούλο του και τη δούλη του, που τους είχατε απελευθερώσει και τους αναγκάσατε να ξαναγίνουν δούλοι σας. Έτσι μολύνατε τό όνομά μου. 17 Γι’ αυτό, εγώ ο Κύριος σας λέω: Επειδή δεν με υπακούσατε και δεν αφήσατε ελεύθερους τους συμπατριώτες σας, θα αφήσω εγώ ελεύθερα εναντίον σας τον πόλεμο, τις επιδημίες και την πείνα, και θα σας διασκορπίσω σε όλα τα βασίλεια της γης. 18,19 Οι άρχοντες του Ιούδα και της Ιερουσαλήμ, οι αξιωματούχοι και οι ιερείς και όλοι οι άλλοι ενδιαφερόμενοι έκαναν συμφωνία μαζί μου· ήταν όλοι παρόντες, όταν το μοσχάρι κόπηκε σε δύο κομμάτια κι εκείνοι πέρασαν ανάμεσα σ’ αυτά.*όταν το μοσχάρι... ανάμεσα σ’ αυτά. Πρόκειται για αρχαίο τύπο επισφράγισης μιας συμφωνίας (Γεν 15:9-10.17-18). Όποιος θα παρέβαινε τους όρους της συμφωνίας, θα είχε την τύχη του ζώου. Παραβίασαν όμως εκείνη τη συμφωνία και δεν εκπλήρωσαν τις υποχρεώσεις που είχαν αναλάβει. Γι’ αυτό τώρα θα συμβεί σ’ αυτούς ό,τι συνέβη στο μοσχάρι. 20 Θα τους παραδώσω στα χέρια των εχθρών τους και τα πτώματά τους θα είναι τροφή για τα πουλιά του ουρανού και τα άγρια ζώα της γης. 21 Θα παραδώσω το βασιλιά του Ιούδα Σεδεκία και τους άρχοντές του στα χέρια των αιμοβόρων εχθρών τους, στο στρατό του βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας. Αν και ο βαβυλωνιακός στρατός έφυγε τώρα από σας,*Αν και... από σας. Αναφορά στα γεγονότα που μνημονεύονται εις κεφ. 37:3-10.22 εγώ, ο Κύριος, θα τους προστάξω να ξανάρθουν και να πολεμήσουν ενάντια σ’ αυτή την πόλη. Θα την κυριέψουν, θα την κάψουν και θα ερημώσω τις πόλεις του Ιούδα, ώστε να μείνουν ακατοίκητες"».

1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion, and all the people, fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities thereof, saying,*34.1 of his…: Heb. the dominion of his hand 2 Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire: 3 And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.*34.3 he shall…: Heb. his mouth shall speak to thy mouth 4 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Thus saith the LORD of thee, Thou shalt not die by the sword: 5 But thou shalt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so shall they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, saying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, saith the LORD. 6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, 7 When the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.

8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them; 9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother. 10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go. 11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

12 Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 13 Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying, 14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.*34.14 hath been…: or, hath sold himself 15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:*34.15 now: Heb. to day*34.15 which…: Heb. whereupon my name is called 16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. 17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.*34.17 to be…: Heb. for a removing 18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof, 19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf; 20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth. 21 And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which are gone up from you. 22 Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.
