1 Μακάρι να ’χα μες στην έρημο ταξιδιωτών κατάλυμα, ώστε να εγκαταλείψω το λαό μου και ν’ απομακρυνθώ απ’ αυτόν, γιατί όλοι τους είναι μοιχοί, συνάθροιση απίστων.*Σε ορισμένες μετ. οι στ. 8:23–9:25 αριθμούνται ως 9:1-26. – μοιχοί. Νοούνται όσοι απιστούν στο Θεό λατρεύοντας τα είδωλα.

2 «Σαν τόξο τεντωμένο, έτοιμη για να ρίξει βέλη ψεύδους είναι η γλώσσα τους. Στη χώρα δεν είναι η αλήθεια που επικρατεί. Κάνουν το ένα κακό μετά το άλλο, κι αρνιούνται κάθε σχέση νά ’χουνε μαζί μου», λέει ο Κύριος. 3 «Γι’ αυτό καθένας να φυλάγεται απ’ τους φίλους του και να μην έχει εμπιστοσύνη ούτε στον αδερφό του· γιατί κάθε αδερφός το δίχως άλλο εξαπατά,*κάθε αδερφός... εξαπατά. Υπαινιγμός στο όνομα του Ιακώβ, που στα εβρ. ακούγεται όπως το ρ. «εξαπατώ». και οι φίλοι είναι συκοφάντες. 4 Εξαπατά καθένας τον πλησίον του, κανείς δε λέει την αλήθεια· συνήθισαν τη γλώσσα τους στο ψέμα και έχουν τόσο πολύ αναμειχθεί με το κακό, ώστε είναι ανήμποροι πια να ξεφύγουν. 5 Η μια καταπίεση διαδέχεται την άλλη, κι η μια απάτη ακολουθεί την άλλη και αρνούνται να με γνωρίσουν».

6 Γι’ αυτό, λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος: «Στο χωνευτήρι θα τους βάλω σαν το μέταλλο και θα τους δοκιμάσω. Ο λαός μου έχει πράξει το κακό. Τι άλλο μπορώ γι’ αυτούς να κάνω; 7 Είναι η γλώσσα τους θανατηφόρο βέλος· το στόμα τους λέει ψέματα. Καθένας λέει στο διπλανό του λόγια φιλικά, μα μέσα στην καρδιά του μυστικά, παγίδα τού ετοιμάζει. 8 Για όλα αυτά δεν θα τους τιμωρήσω;» λέει ο Κύριος· «δε θα εκδικηθώ ένα τέτοιο έθνος;»

9 Θα κλάψω, θα θρηνήσω για τα ψηλά βουνά, θα παραπονεθώ για τα λιβάδια. Καήκαν κάτω στην πεδιάδα! Κανείς πια δεν περνάει από ’κει ούτε ακούγονται των κοπαδιών βελάσματα· τ’ ουρανού τα πουλιά και τ’ άγρια ζώα έφυγαν, εξαφανίστηκαν. 10 Ο Κύριος όμως λέει: «Θα κάνω την Ιερουσαλήμ σωρό από πέτρες και τόπο τσακαλιών· τις πόλεις θα ερημώσω του Ιούδα, ώστε κανείς να μην κατοικεί πια σ’ αυτές».

11 Υπάρχει άνθρωπος τόσο σοφός, που να μπορεί αυτό να το εννοήσει, και στον οποίο να μιλήσει ο Κύριος και να του το εξηγήσει; Το γιατί κατακάηκε η χώρα και ερημώθηκε ώστε κανείς να μην περνάει απ’ αυτήν;

12 Ο ίδιος ο Κύριος απάντησε: «Επειδή εγκατέλειψαν το νόμο μου, το νόμο που τους είχα δώσει, και δεν υπάκουσαν τις εντολές μου, 13 αλλά ακολούθησαν ό,τι τους έλεγε η σκληρή και πονηρή καρδιά τους· τα είδωλα ακολούθησαν του Βάαλ, όπως τους δίδαξαν οι πρόγονοί τους. 14 Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, είπα: "θα θρέψω το λαό αυτό με πικρά χόρτα και θα τους ποτίσω δηλητηριασμένο νερό. 15 Θα τους διασκορπίσω ανάμεσα σε έθνη που δεν τα γνώρισαν ούτε αυτοί ούτε οι πρόγονοί τους και θα εξαπολύσω πόλεμο εναντίον τους, ώσπου να τους εξαφανίσω". 16 Βγάλτε συμπέρασμα απ’ όλα αυτά», λέει ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, «και καλέστε να έρθουν οι ειδικές μοιρολογίστρες, γυναίκες που ξέρουν τι να κάνουνε σε τέτοιες περιπτώσεις». 17 Ας έρθουν γρήγορα και θρήνο ας αρχίσουνε για μας, να τρέξουν δάκρυα απ’ τα μάτια μας, νερό από τα βλέφαρά μας. 18 Το θρήνο ακούστε απ’ της Σιών τα μέρη:

«Χαθήκαμε και καταντροπιαστήκαμε!

Έπρεπε να εγκαταλείψουμε τη χώρα,

γιατί τα σπίτια μας είχανε γκρεμιστεί».

19 Ακούστε, εσείς γυναίκες, το λόγο του Κυρίου! Προσέξτε τα λόγια του, μάθετε τις κόρες σας να θρηνολογούν, διδάξτε η μια στην άλλη αυτό το μοιρολόγι:

20 «Ο θάνατος ανέβηκε απ’ τα παράθυρά μας,

μπήκε στ’ ανάκτορά μας·

για να θερίσει τα παιδιά μέσα στους δρόμους,

και στις πλατείες τα παλικάρια μας».

21 Ο Κύριος μου μίλησε και με διέταξε να πω: «Τα πτώματα των ανθρώπων θα πέσουν πάνω στα χωράφια σαν κοπριά και πίσω από τους θεριστές σαν τα χερόβολα· κι ούτ’ ένας δε θα βρεθεί να τα περισυλλέξει».

22 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Ας μην καυχάται ο σοφός για τη σοφία του ούτε ο δυνατός για τη δύναμή του ούτε ο πλούσιος για τον πλούτο του. 23 Αλλά όποιος θέλει να καυχάται, να καυχάται επειδή είναι ικανός να με γνωρίζει και να ξέρει ότι εγώ, ο Κύριος, ενεργώ με αγάπη, δικαιοσύνη και αξιοπιστία πάνω στη γη. Αυτά με ευχαριστούν».

24 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Έρχονται μέρες που θα τιμωρήσω όλους που έχουν κάνει περιτομή. 25 Τους Αιγυπτίους, τους κατοίκους του Ιούδα, τους Εδωμίτες, τους Αμμωνίτες, τους Μωαβίτες και όλους που έχουν ξυρισμένους τους κροτάφους τους και κατοικούν στην έρημο. Επειδή όλα αυτά τα έθνη, ακόμα και οι Ισραηλίτες, είναι για μένα απερίτμητοι, γιατί δεν έχουν περιτμηθεί στην καρδιά».*όλους... κροτάφους τους: Συνήθεια ορισμένων φυλών Βεδουΐνων, οι οποίοι τιμούσαν έτσι τους θεούς τους. Το έθιμο αυτό απαγορευόταν στον Ισραήλ (βλ. Λευ 19:27). – Για την αρίθμηση των στ. του παρόντος κεφ. βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 1.

9 Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? 10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.*9.10 habitations: or, pastures*9.10 burned up: or, desolate*9.10 both…: Heb. from the fowl even to, etc 11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.*9.11 desolate: Heb. desolation

12 Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through? 13 And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein; 14 But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:*9.14 imagination: or, stubbornness 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. 16 I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.

17 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come: 18 And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. 19 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out. 20 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation. 21 For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets. 22 Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them.

23 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

25 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;*9.25 punish: Heb. visit upon 26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.*9.26 in the utmost…: Heb. cut off into corners, or, having the corners of their hair polled
