1 Ο Κύριος μίλησε στον Ιερεμία, μετά που ο αρχηγός της σωματοφυλακής Νεβουζαραδάν τον είχε αφήσει ελεύθερο να φύγει από τη Ραμά.*Μετά την απελευθέρωσή του (βλ. κεφ. 39:11-14) ο Ιερεμίας, συμπτωματικά όπως φαίνεται, οδηγήθηκε μαζί με τους άλλους συμπατριώτες του στην αιχμαλωσία.

Ο προφήτης είχε οδηγηθεί εκεί δεμένος με αλυσίδες, μαζί με όλους εκείνους από την Ιερουσαλήμ κι από το βασίλειο του Ιούδα που τους έσερναν αιχμαλώτους στη Βαβυλώνα. 2 Ο αρχηγός της σωματοφυλακής αναγνώρισε τον Ιερεμία και του είπε: «Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου, είχε απειλήσει αυτή τη χώρα με αυτές τις συμφορές. 3 Ο Κύριος έκανε όσα προανάγγειλε, επειδή αμαρτήσατε σ’ αυτόν και δεν υπακούσατε στις εντολές του· γι’ αυτό σας βρήκαν όλα αυτά. 4 Τώρα όμως εγώ λύνω τις αλυσίδες που έχεις στα χέρια σου. Αν θέλεις να έρθεις μαζί μου στη Βαβυλώνα, έλα· εγώ θα φροντίσω για σένα. Αν πάλι δεν θέλεις, μείνε· έχεις όλη τη χώρα για να διαλέξεις. Όπου σου φαίνεται καλά και ωραία, μπορείς να πας». 5 Επειδή ο Ιερεμίας δεν απαντούσε αμέσως, ο Νεβουζαραδάν του είπε: «Γύρνα πίσω στο Γεδαλία, γιο του Αχικάμ κι εγγονό του Σαφάν. Ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας τον έχει τοποθετήσει κυβερνήτη στις πόλεις του βασιλείου του Ιούδα. Μείνε εκεί μαζί του ανάμεσα στο λαό ή πήγαινε όπου αλλού σου φαίνεται καλό».

Ο αρχηγός της σωματοφυλακής τού έδωσε τροφές και δώρα και τον άφησε να φύγει. 6 Ο Ιερεμίας ήρθε στο Γεδαλία, γιο του Αχικάμ, στη Μισπά και έμεινε μαζί του ανάμεσα στο λαό που είχε απομείνει στη χώρα.

7,8 Στην ύπαιθρο υπήρχαν ακόμη μερικές ομάδες στρατιωτών, που δεν είχαν αιχμαλωτιστεί από τους Βαβυλώνιους. Αρχηγοί τους ήταν ο Ισμαήλ, γιος του Νεθανία, ο Ιωχανάν και ο Ιωνάθαν, γιοι του Καρεάχ, ο Σεραΐας, γιος του Τανχουμέθ, οι γιοι του Εφαΐ του Νατωφαθίτη και ο Ιααζανίας, γιος κάποιου Μααχαθίτη. Αυτοί άκουσαν ότι ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας είχε τοποθετήσει κυβερνήτη στη χώρα το Γεδαλία, γιο του Αχικάμ, και είχε θέσει υπό την διοίκησή του όλους τους φτωχούς της χώρας, άντρες, γυναίκες, και παιδιά, εκείνους που δεν είχαν οδηγηθεί αιχμάλωτοι στη Βαβυλώνα. Τότε ήρθαν στο Γεδαλία, γιο του Αχικάμ κι εγγονό του Σαφάν στη Μισπά. 9 Ο Γεδαλίας τους όρκισε, αυτούς και τους άντρες τους, και τους είπε: «Μη φοβόσαστε να είστε δούλοι των Βαβυλωνίων· κατοικήστε στη χώρα και υπηρετήστε το βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας και θα σας βγει σε καλό. 10 Εγώ όμως θα μείνω εδώ στη Μισπά και θα σας εκπροσωπήσω στους Βαβυλώνιους που θα έρθουν εδώ σ’ εμάς. Εσείς συγκεντρώστε κρασί, φρούτα, λάδι και βάλτε τα στα αγγεία σας και εγκατασταθείτε στις πόλεις που έχετε επανακτήσει».

11 Στο μεταξύ, πολλοί Ιουδαίοι είχαν καταφύγει στους Μωαβίτες, στους Αμμωνίτες, στους Εδωμίτες και σε άλλες χώρες. Άκουσαν κι αυτοί ότι ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας επέτρεψε στους υπόλοιπους κατοίκους του Ιούδα να μείνουν, και ότι τοποθέτησε σ’ αυτούς κυβερνήτη το Γεδαλία, γιο του Αχικάμ κι εγγονό του Σαφάν. 12 Γι’ αυτό επέστρεψαν απ’ όλες τις χώρες όπου ήταν διασκορπισμένοι και ήρθαν στο Γεδαλία, στη χώρα του Ιούδα, στη Μισπά. Εκεί συγκέντρωσαν κρασί και φρούτα σε μεγάλες ποσότητες.

13 Μια μέρα, ο Ιωχανάν γιος του Καρεάχ και όλοι οι αρχηγοί των στρατευμάτων που ήταν στην ύπαιθρο, ήρθαν στο Γεδαλία στη Μισπά 14 και του είπαν: «Να ξέρεις καλά ότι ο Βααλείς, ο βασιλιάς των Αμμωνιτών, έστειλε τον Ισμαήλ, γιο του Νεθανία, για να σε σκοτώσει». Ο Γεδαλίας όμως δεν τους πίστεψε. 15 Τότε ο Ιωχανάν, γιος του Καρεάχ, είπε κρυφά στο Γεδαλία στη Μισπά: «Άσε με να πάω τώρα να σκοτώσω τον Ισμαήλ, και κανείς δε θα το μάθει. Γιατί να σε σκοτώσει, και όλοι οι κάτοικοι του βασιλείου του Ιούδα που είναι συγκεντρωμένοι γύρω σου να διασκορπιστούν ξανά, κι όσοι απόμειναν κάτοικοι του βασιλείου του Ιούδα να καταστραφούν;» 16 Αλλά ο Γεδαλίας του απάντησε: «Δε θα κάνεις τίποτα. Κι αυτά που λες για τον Ισμαήλ είναι όλα ψέματα».

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, which were carried away captive unto Babylon.*40.1 chains: or, manicles 2 And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place. 3 Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you. 4 And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come; and I will look well unto thee: but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee: whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go, thither go.*40.4 were…: or, are upon thine hand*40.4 I will…: Heb. I will set mine eye upon thee 5 Now while he was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward, and let him go. 6 Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

7 Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon; 8 Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. 10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, which will come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.*40.10 to serve: Heb. to stand before 11 Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan; 12 Even all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 14 And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.*40.14 to slay…: Heb. to strike thee in soul? 15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish? 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.
