1 Ακούστε τι μου έδειξε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός: Τον είδα να δημιουργεί ένα πλήθος ακρίδες. Ήταν λίγο μετά το κόψιμο του χορταριού για τ’ άλογα του βασιλιά, και το χορτάρι άρχιζε να μεγαλώνει πάλι. 2 Κι ενώ οι ακρίδες τρώγανε όλη τη βλάστηση της χώρας, θερμά ικέτεψα και είπα: «Κύριε, Θεέ, παρακαλώ συγχώρησε το λαό σου! Αλλιώς πώς θα μπορέσει να επιζήσει ο λαός του Ιακώβ, τόσο μικρός που είναι;» 3 Τότε ο Κύριος άλλαξε γνώμη κι είπε: «Ωραία· δε θα γίνει».

4 Ο Κύριος ο Θεός μού έδειξε ακόμη ετούτο: Κάλεσε τη φωτιά για τιμωρία στο λαό του κι η φωτιά στέγνωσε τα νερά. Άρχισε να ξεραίνει και τα χωράφια. 5 Τότε είπα: «Κύριε Θεέ, παρακαλώ, σταμάτα τη φωτιά! Αλλιώς πώς θα μπορέσει να επιζήσει ο λαός του Ιακώβ, τόσο μικρός που είναι;» 6 Ο Κύριος άλλαξε πάλι γνώμη κι είπε: «Ωραία· ούτε κι αυτό θα γίνει».

7 Ο Κύριος μου έδειξε ακόμα κάτι: Στεκόταν ο ίδιος όρθιος πλάι σ’ έναν τοίχο, κρατώντας ένα νήμα στάθμης στο χέρι του. 8 Με ρώτησε: «Αμώς τι βλέπεις;» Κι απάντησα: «Ένα νήμα της στάθμης». Τότε ο Κύριος είπε: «Έλεγξα το λαό μου τον Ισραήλ και βρήκα πως δεν είναι ίσιος· μοιάζει γερμένος τοίχος. Κι άλλο δεν θα τον ανεχθώ. 9 Θα καταστραφούν οι ιεροί τόποι των απογόνων του Ισαάκ και τα ιερά κέντρα του βασιλείου του Ισραήλ θα ερημωθούν και θα επιφέρω βίαιο τέλος στη δυναστεία του Ιεροβοάμ».

10 Τότε ο Αμασίας, ο ιερέας της Βαιθήλ, έστειλε μήνυμα στον Ιεροβοάμ, βασιλιά του Ισραήλ, και του ανέφερε: «Ο Αμώς συνωμοτεί εναντίον σου, μες στο βασίλειο του Ισραήλ και δεν μπορεί πια ο λαός ν’ ανέχεται τα λόγια του. 11 Έχει πει ότι ο Ιεροβοάμ στη μάχη θα πεθάνει κι ο Ισραήλ θα οδηγηθεί οπωσδήποτε αιχμάλωτος μακριά απ’ την πατρίδα του».

12 Ο Αμασίας είπε στον Αμώς: «Οραματιστή, σήκω και φύγε γρήγορα από ’δω και πήγαινε στη χώρα του Ιούδα, να προφητέψεις και να κερδίσεις το ψωμί σου εκεί. 13 Μα στη Βαιθήλ εδώ μην ξαναπροφητέψεις, γιατί αυτή είναι εθνικό ιερό, βασιλικός τόπος λατρείας».

14 Ο Αμώς αποκρίθηκε στον Αμασία: «Εγώ δεν είμαι επαγγελματίας προφήτης ούτε ανήκω σε κάποια προφητική ομάδα. Εγώ κερδίζω τη ζωή μου απ’ τα κοπάδια μου κι απ’ τις συκομουριές μου. 15 Αλλά ο Κύριος με πήρε απ’ το κοπάδι μου και μου είπε: "πήγαινε και προφήτεψε εκ μέρους μου στο λαό μου τον Ισραήλ". 16 Τώρα εσύ μου απαγορεύεις να προφητεύω ενάντια στο λαό του Ισραήλ, στους απογόνους του Ισαάκ. 17 Άκου, λοιπόν, αυτά που λέει ο Κύριος: Η γυναίκα σου θα γίνει πόρνη στην πόλη και οι γιοι σου και οι κόρες σου στον πόλεμο θα σκοτωθούν. Η γη σου σ’ άλλους θα μοιραστεί με το σχοινί· εσύ σε χώρα ακάθαρτη*χώρα ακάθαρτη. Κάθε ξένη χώρα ήταν ακάθαρτη λόγω της ειδωλολατρίας, η οποία μόλυνε όλες σχεδόν τις εκδηλώσεις της ζωής. θα πεθάνεις, κι ο Ισραήλ θα οδηγηθεί οπωσδήποτε αιχμάλωτος μακριά απ’ την πατρίδα του».

4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. 5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.*7.5 by…: or, who of (or, for,) Jacob shall stand? 6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. 8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: 9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. 12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: 13 But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.*7.13 chapel: or, sanctuary*7.13 king’s court: Heb. house of the kingdom

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:*7.14 sycomore…: or, wild figs 15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.*7.15 as…: Heb. from behind

16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac. 17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
