1 Ο Κύριος απευθύνθηκε σ’ εμένα και μου είπε: 2 «Μην πάρεις γυναίκα και μην αποκτήσεις καθόλου παιδιά σ’ αυτόν τον τόπο. 3 Γιατί εγώ, ο Κύριος θα σου πω τι θα συμβεί στα παιδιά που θα γεννηθούν σ’ αυτή τη χώρα, καθώς και στους γονείς τους: 4 Θα πεθάνουν από φοβερή αρρώστια· δε θα υπάρχει κανείς να τους πενθήσει και να τους θάψει· τα πτώματά τους θα μένουν εκτεθειμένα στο χώμα σαν κοπριά. Θα σκοτωθούν στον πόλεμο ή θα πεθάνουν απ’ την πείνα· τα πτώματά τους θα χρησιμέψουν για τροφή στους γύπες και στις ύαινες.

5 »Μην μπεις σε σπίτι που πενθούν·» μου λέει, «μην πας να πενθήσεις μαζί τους ούτε να τους εκφράσεις τη λύπη σου, γιατί εγώ απέσυρα από το λαό αυτόν τη φιλία μου, την αγάπη μου και την ευσπλαχνία μου. 6 Πλούσιοι και φτωχοί, όλοι θα πεθάνουν σ’ αυτή τη χώρα. Κανείς δε θα τους θάψει ούτε θα τους θρηνήσει· κανείς δε θα κάνει εντομές στο σώμα του ούτε θα ξυρίσει το κεφάλι του για να εκφράσει τη λύπη του γι’ αυτούς.*κανείς δε θα κάνει εντομές... γι’ αυτούς. Πρόκειται για εθιμικές εκδηλώσεις πένθους.7 Κανένας δε θα μείνει να φάει μαζί τους στο νεκρόδειπνο, να τους προσφέρει ένα ποτήρι παρηγοριάς, ακόμη κι αν είναι ο πατέρας τους ή η μάνα τους που πέθαναν.

8 »Μην μπεις σε σπίτι που γίνεται συμπόσιο και μην καθίσεις να φας και να πιεις μαζί τους. 9 Εγώ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ, λέω: Θα κάνω να σωπάσουν στον τόπο αυτό οι θόρυβοι των πανηγυριών, οι κραυγές της χαράς και τα τραγούδια των νιόπαντρων· κι εσείς θα επιζήσετε για να το δείτε.

10 »Όταν θ’ αναγγείλεις στο λαό όλα αυτά που σου λέω, εκείνοι θα σε ρωτήσουν: "γιατί ο Κύριος μας απειλεί μ’ αυτό το μεγάλο κακό; Ποια είναι η ανομία μας και ποια αμαρτία κάναμε απέναντι στον Κύριο, το Θεό μας;" 11 Τότε θα τους απαντήσεις: "οι πρόγονοί σας με αποστραφήκαν", λέει ο Κύριος. "Ακολούθησαν άλλους θεούς, τους λάτρεψαν και τους προσκύνησαν κι εμένα μ’ εγκατέλειψαν και δεν τήρησαν το νόμο μου. 12 Αλλά κι εσείς κάνατε ακόμα χειρότερα απ’ τους προγόνους σας, γιατί ακολουθήσατε καθένας σας τις επιθυμίες της πονηρής καρδιάς του και δεν υπακούσατε σ’ εμένα. 13 Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ θα σας διώξω απ’ αυτή τη χώρα και θα σας παραπετάξω σε μια χώρα που δεν τη γνωρίσατε ποτέ ούτε εσείς ούτε οι πρόγονοί σας. Εκεί θα είστε υποχρεωμένοι να λατρεύετε άλλους θεούς, μέρα και νύχτα· αλλά τότε δε θα σας δείξω καμιά συμπόνια"».

14 «Έρχονται μέρες», λέει ο Κύριος,*Οι στ. 14-15 απαντώνται επίσης και στο κεφ. 23:7-8, όπου πιθανώς είναι και η αρχική τους θέση. Παρεμβλήθηκαν εδώ για λειτουργική χρήση στη συναγωγή, ώστε μαζί με τη μακροσκελή εξαγγελία της κρίσεως να απαγγέλλονται και λόγοι σωτηρίας. «που δε θα λένε πια "μα τον αληθινό Θεό, που έβγαλε τους Ισραηλίτες από την Αίγυπτο", 15 αλλά θα λένε: "μα τον αληθινό Θεό, που έβγαλε τους Ισραηλίτες από τη χώρα του βορρά*του βορρά. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 1:14. κι από τις άλλες χώρες όπου τους είχε διασκορπίσει". Πράγματι θα τους φέρω πάλι πίσω στη χώρα τους, που την είχα δώσει στους προγόνους τους».

16 «Θα στείλω πολλούς ψαράδες», λέει ο Κύριος, «που θα συλλάβουν το λαό του Ιούδα. Έπειτα θα στείλω πολλούς κυνηγούς, που θα τον καταδιώκουν πάνω σε κάθε βουνό και λόφο, και στις σχισμές των βράχων. 17 Βλέπω όλες του τις πράξεις· τίποτα δε μένει από μένα κρυφό, ούτε μπορούν οι ανομίες τους να ξεφύγουν απ’ τη ματιά μου. 18 Πρώτα απ’ όλα θ’ ανταποδώσω πλήρως και χωρίς κανένα συμβιβασμό την αμαρτία τους, γιατί μόλυναν τη χώρα μου με τα νεκρά είδωλά τους και έστησαν αυτά τα βδελύγματα παντού».

19 Κύριε, εσύ μου δίνεις δύναμη, με προστατεύεις και σ’ εσένα καταφεύγω όταν θλίβομαι. Σ’ εσένα θα ’ρθουν οι λαοί από τα πέρατα της γης και θα πουν: «Βέβαια, οι θεοί που μας κληροδότησαν οι πρόγονοί μας δεν είναι τίποτ’ άλλο, παρά ψεύτικα, μάταια κι άχρηστα είδωλα. 20 Είναι δυνατόν κανείς να κατασκευάσει τους θεούς του; Αυτά τα κατασκευάσματα δεν είναι θεοί».

21 «Πράγματι», λέει ο Κύριος, «αυτή τη φορά θα κάνω τους ανθρώπους να γνωρίσουν καλά τη μεγάλη μου δύναμη· τότε θα μάθουν ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος».

1 The word of the LORD came also unto me, saying, 2 Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place. 3 For thus saith the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that begat them in this land; 4 They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. 5 For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and mercies.*16.5 mourning: or, mourning feast 6 Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them: 7 Neither shall men tear themselves for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.*16.7 tear…: or, break bread for them 8 Thou shalt not also go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink. 9 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will cause to cease out of this place in your eyes, and in your days, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride.

10 And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt shew this people all these words, and they shall say unto thee, Wherefore hath the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against the LORD our God? 11 Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your fathers have forsaken me, saith the LORD, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my law; 12 And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken unto me:*16.12 imagination: or, stubbornness 13 Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night; where I will not shew you favour.

14 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be said, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; 15 But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their fathers.

16 Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. 17 For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes. 18 And first I will recompense their iniquity and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they have filled mine inheritance with the carcases of their detestable and abominable things. 19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. 20 Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods? 21 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD.*16.21 The LORD: or, JEHOVAH
