1 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Αν κάποιος διώξει τη γυναίκα του, κι αυτή πάει και γίνει γυναίκα άλλου, μπορεί ο πρώτος να την ξαναπαντρευτεί; Όχι. Δεν είν’ αυτή η χώρα εντελώς μολυσμένη;*μολυσμένη. Βλ. Δτ 24:1-4. Εσύ, Ισραήλ, πόρνεψες μ’ εραστές πολλούς και τώρα θέλεις να γυρίσεις σ’ εμένα; 2 Σήκω τα μάτια σου στους λόφους και δες πού δεν επόρνεψες; Σε ποιους δρόμους δεν κάθισες προσμένοντας τους εραστές σου, καθώς ο Άραβας στην έρημο, που καρτεράει το θύμα του; Με τις πορνείες σου και τις κακίες σου μόλυνες τη γη. 3 Γι’ αυτό δεν έπεσαν βροχές φθινόπωρο ούτε άνοιξη. Μοιάζεις πόρνη ξεδιάντροπη και τα λάθη σου δεν τ’ αναγνωρίζεις. 4 Και τώρα μου λες: "πατέρα μου, που μ’ αγαπάς από παιδί, 5 δε θα ’σαι αιώνια μαζί μου οργισμένος, δεν είν’ έτσι;" Αυτά είπες, Ισραήλ, αλλά δεν παύεις πεισματικά να κάνεις όσα κακά μπορείς».

6 Την εποχή της βασιλείας του Ιωσία ο Κύριος μου είπε: «Είδες τι έπραξε αυτή η άπιστη γυναίκα, ο Ισραήλ; Πήγε πάνω σε κάθε ψηλό βουνό και κάτω από κάθε σκιερό δέντρο και πόρνεψε εκεί. 7 Κι αναλογίστηκα: Αφού χορτάσει μ’ όλα αυτά, θα γυρίσει σ’ εμένα· αλλά δε γύρισε. Και τα είδε αυτά ο Ιούδας, η άπιστη αδερφή του Ισραήλ. 8 Ακόμα είδα και τούτο: ότι ενώ εγώ έδιωξα τον Ισραήλ, την άπιστη γυναίκα, για όλες τις μοιχείες που είχε διαπράξει και της έδωσα το έγγραφο του διαζυγίου, ωστόσο η άλλη άπιστη γυναίκα, ο Ιούδας, δε φοβήθηκε αλλά πήγε και πόρνεψε κι εκείνη. 9 Με την αδιάντροπη πορνεία του μόλυνε τη χώρα και μοίχευε λατρεύοντας λιθάρια και ξύλα. 10 Και μ’ όλα αυτά ο Ιούδας, η άπιστη αδερφή του Ισραήλ, δεν επέστρεψε σ’ εμένα μ’ όλη του την καρδιά, αλλά προσποιητά. Εγώ το λέω, ο Κύριος».

11 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: «Μολονότι ο Ισραήλ είχε απομακρυνθεί από μένα, αποδείχτηκε δικαιότερος από τον άπιστο Ιούδα. 12 Πήγαινε, λοιπόν, φώναξε κατά το βορρά*κατά το βορρά. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 1:14. και πες: "ο Κύριος λέει: Γύρνα πίσω, άπιστη γυναίκα, Ισραήλ· δε θέλω να ξεσπάσει πάνω σου η οργή μου, γιατί εγώ είμαι πολυεύσπλαχνος. Δε θα είμαι για πάντα οργισμένος. 13 Μονάχα παραδέξου την ανομία σου, ότι απίστησες σ’ εμένα, τον Κύριο, το Θεό σου· στους ξένους παραδόθηκες θεούς κάτω από κάθε σκιερό δέντρο, και δεν υπάκουσες στις εντολές μου"».

14 «Γυρίστε πίσω», λέει ο Κύριος, «παραστρατημένα παιδιά, γιατί σ’ εμένα ανήκετε. Θα πάρω έναν δυο από κάθε πόλη και φυλή και θα τους φέρω στη Σιών. 15 Θα σας δώσω ποιμένες όπως τους θέλω εγώ, και θα σας φροντίζουν με σύνεση και κατανόηση.

16 »Τότε», συνέχισε ο Κύριος, «όταν θα ’χετε γίνει πολυάριθμοι και θα ’χετε αυξηθεί στη χώρα αυτή, κανείς δε θα μιλάει πια για την κιβωτό της διαθήκης του Κυρίου ούτε κανείς θα τη σκέφτεται ούτε θα τη θυμάται ούτε θα τη χρειάζεται ούτε και θα την ξαναφτιάξει κανείς. 17 Εκείνον τον καιρό θα αποκαλούν την Ιερουσαλήμ "Θρόνο του Κυρίου" και θα συγκεντρώνονται σ’ αυτήν όλα τα έθνη στ’ όνομα του Κυρίου· δε θ’ ακολουθούν τις διαθέσεις της πονηρής καρδιάς τους. 18 Τότε θα ενωθεί ο Ιούδας με τον Ισραήλ, και θα ’ρθουνε μαζί από τη χώρα του βορρά στη χώρα που έδωσα στους πατέρες σας να την έχουν στην κατοχή τους».

19 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Είχα αποφασίσει να σε δεχτώ σαν γιο μου,*σαν γιο μου. Ο Ισραήλ εδώ παρομοιάζεται με γιο, γιατί συνήθως οι κόρες δεν διεκδικούσαν κληρονομιά. και να σου δώσω μια ονειρεμένη χώρα ιδιοκτησία σου, ένδοξη ανάμεσα στα έθνη. Κι αναλογιζόμουν ότι θα με αποκαλούσες "πατέρα" κι από μένα δεν θ’ απομακρυνόσουν. 20 Αλλά όπως μια γυναίκα απιστεί στον άντρα της, έτσι απίστησες σ’ εμένα, Ισραήλ».

21 Φωνή ακούστηκε από τους λόφους, θρήνος και παρακλήσεις των Ισραηλιτών, επειδή πήραν το στραβό δρόμο, λησμόνησαν τον Κύριο, το Θεό τους. 22 Αλλά ο Κύριος λέει: «Επιστρέψτε παραστρατημένα παιδιά· θα αποκαταστήσω το παραστράτημά σας».

«Ναι, Κύριε, ερχόμαστε σ’ εσένα, γιατί εσύ είσαι ο Θεός μας. 23 Στ’ αλήθεια, η θορυβώδης πολυπραγμοσύνη*η θορυβώδης πολυπραγμοσύνη. Υπονοούνται οι ειδωλολατρικές τελετές. πάνω στα βουνά και στους λόφους δε μας βοηθάει· η βοήθειά μας, Κύριε, Θεέ μας, μόνο από σένα προέρχεται. 24 Από παλιά ο Βάαλ κατέφαγε καθετί που οι πρόγονοί μας είχαν αποκτήσει: τα πρόβατά μας, τα βόδια μας, τους γιους μας και τις κόρες μας. 25 Ζούμε μέσα στη ντροπή, βυθισμένοι στην ατιμία μας. Έτσι μας αξίζει, γιατί αμαρτήσαμε στον Κύριο, το Θεό μας, εμείς και οι πρόγονοί μας, από παλιά μέχρι σήμερα· δεν υπακούσαμε στις εντολές του».

1 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.*3.1 They say: Heb. Saying 2 Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. 3 Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. 4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth? 5 Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.

6 The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. 7 And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. 9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.*3.9 lightness: or, fame 10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.*3.10 feignedly: Heb. in falsehood 11 And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.

12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever. 13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD. 14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: 15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.*3.16 come to mind: Heb. come upon the heart*3.16 that…: or, it be magnified 17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.*3.17 imagination: or, stubbornness 18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.*3.18 with: or, to*3.18 given…: or, caused your fathers to possess 19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.*3.19 from me: Heb. from after me*3.19 a goodly…: Heb. an heritage of glory, or, beauty*3.19 pleasant…: Heb. land of desire

20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.*3.20 husband: Heb. friend 21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God. 22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God. 23 Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. 24 For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
