1 Να μη ζηλεύεις τους κακούς ανθρώπους, τη συντροφιά τους μην την επιθυμείς. 2 Γιατί η καρδιά τους σκέφτεται τον όλεθρο και τα χείλη τους λένε παρανομίες.

3 Με τη σοφία χτίζεται το σπίτι και με τη φρόνηση στεριώνεται· 4 με τη γνώση γεμίζουνε τα δώματα απ’ όλα τα πολύτιμα, λαχταριστά αγαθά.

5 Η σοφία του ανθρώπου τον κάνει δυνατό, η γνώση του το σφρίγος του αυξαίνει· 6 γιατί πρώτα κάνεις προσεκτικά τα σχέδιά σου κι ύστερα βγαίνεις στον πόλεμο, κι η νίκη εξασφαλίζεται με τους πολλούς συμβούλους.

7 Είν’ άπιαστη η σοφία για τον ανόητο. Στης πολιτείας την πύλη το στόμα του ν’ ανοίξει δεν μπορεί.

8 Αυτός που σκέφτεται να κάνει το κακό λέγεται «απατεώνας». 9 Η δολιότητα άλλο δεν είν’ από αμαρτία· κι οι άνθρωποι το χλευαστή τον αποστρέφονται.

10 Αν χάσεις το κουράγιο σου της αγωνίας τη μέρα, η δύναμή σου είναι μικρή.

11 Μη διστάσεις να ελευθερώσεις εκείνους που άδικα τους τραβούν στο θάνατο, και σώσε αυτούς που τους πάνε να τους σφαγιάσουν. 12 Μην πεις «δεν είχα ιδέα του τι γίνεται»· μήπως δεν το γνωρίζει εκείνος που σταθμίζει τις καρδιές; Αυτός που επιβλέπει τη ζωή σου δεν το ξέρει; Και δε θ’ ανταποδώσει στον καθένα σύμφωνα με τα έργα του;

13 Γιε μου, να τρως το μέλι, γιατί είν’ καλό· και μια κερήθρα μέλι θα ’ναι γλυκιά στον ουρανίσκο σου. 14 Το ίδιο συμβαίνει και με τη σοφία στην ψυχή σου: Όταν την αποκτήσεις, θα ’χεις μέλλον λαμπρό γεμάτο ελπίδα.

15 Μη σχεδιάζεις, ασεβή, κακό ενάντια στου δίκαιου το σπίτι, μην του ταράζεις τη γαλήνη του σπιτιού του. 16 Γιατί ο δίκαιος κι αν πέσει εφτά φορές, ξανασηκώνεται· ενώ οι ασεβείς πέφτουν στη δυστυχία για πάντα.

17 Μη χαίρεσαι στην πτώση του εχθρού σου, κι ας μην ευφραίνεται η καρδιά σου όταν αυτός κλονίζεται· 18 μήπως το δει ο Κύριος και για κακό το λογαριάσει, και αναστείλει το θυμό του εναντίον του.

19 Με τους κακούς ανθρώπους μην αγανακτείς όταν ευτυχούν, και μη φθονείς τους ασεβείς. 20 Γιατί δεν έχουν μέλλον οι κακοί· η ζωή των ασεβών λυχνάρι ’ναι που σβήνει.

21 Γιε μου, να σέβεσαι τον Κύριο και το βασιλιά· και με τους ταραξίες να μην ανακατεύεσαι. 22 Γιατί άξαφνα η συμφορά τους θα φανεί, και ποιος να ξέρει τι καταστροφές θα προκληθούν από τον ένα κι απ’ τον άλλο!

23 Μερικά ακόμη λόγια σοφών:

Η μεροληψία στην κρίση δεν είναι καλό. 24 Αυτόν που λέει στον ασεβή «είσαι δίκαιος» οι λαοί θα τον καταραστούν· θα τον αποστραφούν τα έθνη. 25 Αλλ’ αυτοί που τον ένοχο καταδικάζουν θα ευτυχούν, θα πέσουν πάνω τους πληθώρα οι ευλογίες.

26 Εκείνος που με λόγια αποκρίνεται σωστά, είναι σάμπως να δίνει φίλημα στα χείλη.

27 Φρόντισε πρώτα την εργασία σου έξω, το χωράφι σου ετοίμασε, κι έπειτα απ’ όλα αυτά χτίσε το σπίτι σου.

28 Μη δίνεις μαρτυρία μ’ ελαφρότητα ενάντια στον πλησίον σου, και με τα λόγια σου μην παραπλανάς. 29 Μη λες «όπως μου έκανε αυτός, κι εγώ έτσι θα του κάνω· θ’ ανταποδώσω στον καθένα ανάλογα με τα έργα του».

30 Περνούσα απ’ το χωράφι του τεμπέλη κι από το αμπέλι του ανόητου. 31 Και να, παντού είχαν φυτρώσει αγκάθια, τσουκνίδες τού είχανε σκεπάσει την επιφάνεια, κι η πέτρινή του μάντρα είχε γκρεμιστεί. 32 Είδα λοιπόν και σκέφτηκα, είδα και πήρα μάθημα: 33 Λίγος ύπνος, λίγη νύστα, λίγο τα χέρια να σταυρώσεις για ν’ αναπαυτείς, 34 και θα ’ρθει η φτώχεια ξαφνικά σαν το ληστή, κι η στέρηση σαν άντρας οπλισμένος.

7 Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate. 8 He that deviseth to do evil shall be called a mischievous person. 9 The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scorner is an abomination to men. 10 If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.*24.10 small: Heb. narrow

11 If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; 12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

13 My son, eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:*24.13 to…: Heb. upon thy palate 14 So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: 16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: 18 Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.*24.18 it displease…: Heb. it be evil in his eyes

19 Fret not thyself because of evil men, neither be thou envious at the wicked;*24.19 Fret…: or, Keep not company with the wicked 20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.*24.20 candle: or, lamp

21 My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: and meddle not with them that are given to change:*24.21 them…: Heb. changers 22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?

23 These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. 24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: 25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.*24.25 a good…: Heb. a blessing of good 26 Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer.*24.26 that…: Heb. that answereth right words 27 Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.

28 Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips. 29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.
