1 Όπως είναι αταίριαστο χιόνι το καλοκαίρι, βροχή στο θερισμό, το ίδιο αταίριαστη είναι και η τιμή στον άμυαλο.

2 Σαν το σπουργίτι που ξεφεύγει, το χελιδόνι που πετάει, έτσι κι άδικη κατάρα ξαστοχάει.

3 Μαστίγιο για το άλογο, για το γαϊδούρι χαλινάρι, και για τη ράχη των ανόητων είν’ το ραβδί.

4 Αν απαντήσεις σε μια ανόητη ερώτηση, γίνεσαι το ίδιο ανόητος μ’ εκείνον που ρωτάει.

5 Δώσε ανόητη απάντηση σ’ ερώτηση ανόητη, κι αυτός που σε ρωτάει θα καταλάβει ότι δεν ήταν όσο νόμιζε σοφός.

6 Κόβει τα πόδια του, μπλέκει σε φασαρίες, όποιος μήνυμα στέλνει με ανόητον.

7 Όπως τα σκέλη του χωλού πατούν αβέβαια, έτσι μια παροιμία στου ανόητου το στόμα.

8 Το ίδιο σαν να δένεις λιθάρι στη σφεντόνα, είναι τιμές να δίνεις στον ανόητο.

9 Καθώς αγκάθι προσπαθεί να βγάλει από το χέρι ο μεθυσμένος, τό ίδιο κι ο ανόητος που παροιμία προσπαθεί να πει.

10 Όλα ο δυνάστης τα καταστρέφει, μισθώνοντας ανόητους και τυχαίους περαστικούς.

11 Σαν το σκυλί που σ’ ό,τι ξέρασε ξαναγυρίζει, έτσι ο ανόητος επαναλαμβάνει την ανοησία του.

12 Βλέπεις άνθρωπο που θαρρεί σοφός πως είναι; Πιότερη ελπίδα υπάρχει απ’ τον ανόητο, παρά απ’ αυτόν.

13 Λέει ο τεμπέλης για να μη βγει απ’ το σπίτι του: «Λιοντάρι είναι στο δρόμο! Λιοντάρι στις πλατείες!»

14 Όπως γυρίζει η πόρτα στους αρμούς της, το ίδιο κι ο τεμπέλης στο κρεβάτι του.

15 Βουτάει το χέρι του ο τεμπέλης στην πιατέλα, αλλά βαρυέται να το φέρει ως το στόμα του.

16 Θαρρεί ο τεμπέλης τον εαυτό του πιο σοφό από εφτά ανθρώπους ειδικούς να δώσουν γνώμη.

17 Μοιάζει μ’ αυτόν που πιάνει σκύλο απ’ τ’ αυτιά, ο διαβάτης που μπερδεύεται σε ξένη φασαρία.

18 Σαν το μανιακό, που ρίχνει φλόγες και θανατηφόρα βέλη, 19 έτσι είν’ ο άνθρωπος που απατάει το διπλανό του κι ύστερα λέει: «στ’ αστεία το ’κανα!»

20 Όπου τα ξύλα λείπουν, σβήνει η φωτιά· κι όπου δεν βάζουν λόγια, η διχόνοια παύει.

21 Κάρβουνα για την ανθρακιά, για τη φωτιά τα ξύλα, κι ο άνθρωπος ο εριστικός φιλονικίες ν’ ανάβει.

22 Του συκοφάντη τα λεγόμενα είναι σαν λιχουδιές· ως της κοιλιάς τα βάθη κατεβαίνουν.

23 Δοχείο πήλινο, επιχρισμένο με ασημένιο κράμα είναι τα λόγια τα ένθερμα από κακή καρδιά.

24 Όποιος μισεί, προσποιείται με τα λόγια του και μηχανεύεται στο βάθος την απάτη. 25 Όταν γλυκομιλάει μην τον πιστεύεις, γιατί πολλά έχει μισητά πράγματα στην καρδιά του. 26 Αν με προσποίηση το μίσος του το κρύβει, μέσα στη σύναξη η κακία του θα αποκαλυφθεί.

27 Όποιος σκάβει ένα λάκκο πέφτει ο ίδιος μέσα, κι ο βράχος πίσω θα γυρίσει σ’ αυτόν που τον κατρακυλά.

28 Θα πρέπει να μισείς κάποιον πολύ, αφού με ψέματα γυρεύεις να τον βλάψεις. Οι κολακείες άλλο δεν φέρνουν από καταστροφή.
