1 Οι ιερείς-Λευίτες δεν θα έχουν κληρονομικό μερίδιο στη χώρα, όπως οι άλλοι Ισραηλίτες. Αυτοί θα τρώνε από τις θυσίες του Κυρίου, που προσφέρονται με φωτιά στο θυσιαστήριο, και αναλογούν σ’ αυτόν. 2 Αυτοί δεν θα έχουν κλήρο γης όπως οι άλλοι, οι ομοεθνείς τους· ο ίδιος ο Κύριος θα είναι ο κλήρος τους, όπως τους το υποσχέθηκε.

3 Οι ιερείς θα δικαιούνται να παίρνουν από το λαό, απ’ αυτούς που προσφέρουν θυσία βόδι ή πρόβατο, την ωμοπλάτη, τα δυο σαγόνια και το στομάχι. 4 Τα πρωτογεννήματα από το στάρι, το κρασί και το λάδι σας κι επίσης από το μαλλί των προβάτων σας θα τα δίνετε σ’ αυτούς. 5 Αυτούς διάλεξε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, απ’ όλες τις φυλές σας, για να του προσφέρουν αδιάκοπα τις υπηρεσίες τους, αυτοί και οι απόγονοί τους.

6 Αν ένας Λευίτης, έχει την επιθυμία να φύγει από κάποια πόλη του Ισραήλ, όπου κατοικεί σαν ξένος, και να έρθει στον τόπο που θα έχει διαλέξει ο Κύριος για να λατρεύεται το όνομά του, 7 μπορεί να έρθει και να υπηρετεί τον Κύριο, το Θεό του, όπως όλοι οι άλλοι Λευίτες, που βρίσκονται εκεί, και υπηρετούν ενώπιον του Κυρίου. 8 Θα παίρνει κι αυτός το ίδιο μερίδιο τροφής μ’ εκείνους, ανεξάρτητα από τα εισοδήματα που έχει από την πατρική του περιουσία.*ανεξάρτητα... Το εβρ. δεν είναι πολύ σαφές.

9 Όταν θα μπείτε στη χώρα, που σας δίνει, ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, δεν πρέπει να μάθετε να τηρείτε τα βδελυρά έθιμα εκείνων των εθνών. 10 Δε θα βρεθεί κανείς ανάμεσά σας, που να προσφέρει το γιο του ή την κόρη του να καούν θυσία ή που ν’ ασκεί μαντεία ή οιωνοσκοπία ή απόκρυφες τέχνες ή μαγεία· 11 κανείς δεν πρέπει να γίνει μάγος ή εξορκιστής πνευμάτων, μάντης ή νεκρομάντης. 12 Όποιος τα κάνει αυτά είναι μισητός στον Κύριο. Άλλωστε εξαιτίας αυτών των βδελυρών πράξεων θα διώξει ο Κύριος αυτά τα έθνη από μπροστά σας. 13 Πρέπει, λοιπόν, να είστε απόλυτα πιστοί στον Κύριο, το Θεό σας.

14 Αυτά τα έθνη που θα διώξετε, δίνουν προσοχή στους οιωνοσκόπους και στους μάντεις. Τέτοια πράγματα όμως δεν τα επιτρέπει σ’ εσάς ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας. 15 Αυτός θα αναδείξει έναν προφήτη από σας, μέσα από το λαό σας, σαν εμένα. Αυτόν ν’ ακούτε.

16 Αυτό ακριβώς ζητήσατε από τον Κύριο, το Θεό σας την ημέρα που είχατε συναχθεί στο όρος Χωρήβ. «Δε θέλουμε ν’ ακούμε πια τη φωνή του Κυρίου, του Θεού μας», λέγατε. «Δε θέλουμε πια να βλέπουμε αυτή τη μεγάλη φωτιά, για να μην πεθάνουμε». 17 Τότε ο Κύριος μου είπε· «Σωστά είναι αυτά που είπαν. 18 Εγώ θ’ αναδείξω μέσα από τον ίδιο τους το λαό έναν προφήτη γι’ αυτούς, σαν εσένα. Θα βάλω τα λόγια μου στο στόμα του και θα τους λέει όλα όσα εγώ θα τον διατάζω. 19 Αν κάποιος δεν δώσει προσοχή στα λόγια μου, δηλαδή σ’ αυτά που θα λέει ο προφήτης εξ ονόματός μου, εγώ ο ίδιος, θα τον τιμωρήσω. 20 Αν όμως κάποιος προφήτης αρχίσει από ασέβεια να λέει εξ ονόματός μου πράγματα που δεν τον διέταξα εγώ να τα πει ή αν μιλάει εξ ονόματος άλλων θεών, ο προφήτης αυτός πρέπει να θανατωθεί».

21 Ίσως τώρα να διερωτηθείτε: «Πώς θα ξεχωρίζουμε το λόγο που δεν τον είπε ο Κύριος;» 22 Λοιπόν: Αν ένας προφήτης μιλήσει εξ ονόματος του Κυρίου αλλά ο λόγος του δεν πραγματοποιηθεί και δεν επαληθευτεί, τότε το λόγο αυτόν δεν τον είπε ο Κύριος· ο προφήτης μίλησε με ασέβεια. Μην τον φοβηθείτε.

1 The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance. 2 Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.

3 And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw. 4 The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him. 5 For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.

6 And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose; 7 Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD. 8 They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.*18.8 that…: Heb. his sale by the fathers

9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. 10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.*18.13 perfect: or, upright, or, sincere 14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.*18.14 possess: or, inherit

15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; 16 According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. 17 And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. 18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. 20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
