1 Όταν ο Κύριος ο Θεός σας εξαφανίσει τα άλλα έθνη, και δώσει σ’ εσάς τη χώρα τους κι εσείς τα διώξετε και εγκατασταθείτε στις πόλεις τους και στα σπίτια τους, 2,3 τότε θα πρέπει να χωρίσετε τη χώρα που θα σας δώσει ο Κύριος σε τρία τμήματα και στο καθένα να ορίσετε μία πόλη. Θα κατασκευάσετε και δρόμο γι’ αυτές τις πόλεις, ώστε να μπορεί εύκολα να καταφεύγει σ’ αυτές κάθε φονιάς. 4 Ένας φονιάς θα μπορεί να καταφεύγει εκεί για ασφάλεια μόνο αν έχει σκοτώσει το συνάνθρωπό του χωρίς να το θέλει, κι ενώ δεν τον μισούσε προηγουμένως. 5 Όπως, για παράδειγμα, όταν μπει κάποιος στο δάσος με έναν άλλον για να κόψουν ξύλα· ενδέχεται να σηκώσει με το χέρι του το τσεκούρι για να χτυπήσει ένα δέντρο, αλλά να φύγει το σίδερο από το στυλιάρι και να χτυπήσει τον άλλο θανάσιμα. Ο δράστης αυτός θα μπορεί να καταφεύγει σε μια από τις πόλεις εκείνες και να ζει ασφαλής. 6 Αλλιώς, θα μπορούσε ο εκδικητής του θύματος να καταδιώξει το φονιά πάνω στο θυμό του, να τον προλάβει –αν μάλιστα ο δρόμος είναι μακρύς– και να τον σκοτώσει· ενώ ο δράστης δεν είναι ένοχος θανάτου, εφ’ όσον δεν μισούσε προηγουμένως το θύμα του.

7 Γι’ αυτό σας διατάζω να ξεχωρίσετε τρεις πόλεις. 8,9 Κι εφ’ όσον εσείς φροντίζετε να εφαρμόζετε όλες αυτές τις εντολές που εγώ σας δίνω σήμερα, εφόσον αγαπάτε τον Κύριο, τον Θεό σας και βαδίζετε πάντοτε στο δρόμο του, τότε αυτός θα διευρύνει τα σύνορά σας και θα σας δώσει όλη τη χώρα που έχει υποσχεθεί με όρκο στους προγόνους σας. Όταν γίνει αυτό, τότε θα προσθέσετε τρεις ακόμα πόλεις στις πρώτες τρεις. 10 Έτσι δεν θα σκοτώνονται αθώοι άνθρωποι στη χώρα, που σας δίνει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας για ιδιοκτησία· αλλιώς η ευθύνη γι’ αυτούς τους θανάτους θα είναι όλη δική σας.

11 Αν όμως ένας μισεί κάποιον και του στήσει ενέδρα κι ορμήσει εναντίον του και του επιφέρει θανατηφόρο χτύπημα και μετά καταφύγει σε μια απ’ αυτές τις πόλεις, 12 τότε οι πρεσβύτεροι της πόλης του θα στείλουν να τον πάρουν από ’κει και θα τον παραδώσουν στον εκδικητή του θύματος για να θανατωθεί. 13 Δε θα τον λυπηθείτε· θα εξαφανίσετε από το λαό του Ισραήλ το δολοφόνο ενός αθώου, αν θέλετε να ευτυχήσετε.

14 Μη μετακινείτε τα σύνορα του γείτονά σας από τη θέση που θα καθορίσουν οι πρώτοι κάτοχοι, στον κλήρο που θα λάβετε, στη χώρα που σας δίνει για ιδιοκτησία ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας.

15 Ένας μόνο μάρτυρας δεν αρκεί για να καταδικαστεί κάποιος που κατηγορείται για οποιοδήποτε έγκλημα, παρανομία ή αμαρτία. Κάθε γεγονός θα επιβεβαιώνεται με τη μαρτυρική κατάθεση δύο ή τριών μαρτύρων.

16 Αν παρουσιαστεί ένας ψευδομάρτυρας εναντίον κάποιου και τον κατηγορεί για παρανομία, 17 τότε θα παρουσιαστούν ενώπιον του Κυρίου και οι δύο αντίδικοι μπροστά στους ιερείς και στους δικαστές που θα είναι σε υπηρεσία εκείνες τις μέρες. 18 Οι δικαστές θα εξετάσουν καλά την υπόθεση και, αν αποδειχθεί ότι ο μάρτυρας είπε ψέματα και κατηγόρησε άδικα το συμπατριώτη του, 19 τότε θα του επιβληθεί η τιμωρία που αυτός υπολόγιζε να επιβληθεί στο συμπατριώτη του. Έτσι θα εξαλείψετε το κακό από ανάμεσά σας.

20 Οι υπόλοιποι θ’ ακούσουν και θα φοβηθούν και δε θα ξανακάνουν πια τέτοιο αδίκημα. 21 Κανένα δε θα λυπάστε. Θ’ ανταποδίδετε ζωή αντί ζωής, οφθαλμόν αντί οφθαλμού, οδόντα αντί οδόντος, χέρι αντί χεριού και πόδι αντί ποδιού.

4 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;*19.4 in…: Heb. from yesterday the third day 5 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:*19.5 head: Heb. iron*19.5 helve: Heb. wood*19.5 lighteth…: Heb. findeth 6 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.*19.6 slay…: Heb. smite him in life*19.6 in…: Heb. from yesterday the third day 7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee. 8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers; 9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three: 10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

11 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:*19.11 mortally: Heb. in life 12 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. 13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;*19.16 that…: or, falling away 17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; 18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; 19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. 20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you. 21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
