1 Ακούστε, ουρανοί, που θα μιλήσω·

κι άκουσε γη, τα λόγια που θα πω.

2 Ας στάξει σαν βροχή η διδασκαλία μου

κι ο λόγος μου, ας σταλάξει σαν δροσιά,

καθώς πάνω στη χλόη το ψιλόβροχο

και σαν ψιχάλα πάνω στο χορτάρι.

3 Θα διαλαλήσω του Κυρίου τ’ όνομα,

το μεγαλείο υμνήστε του Θεού μας.

4 Γιατί είναι βράχος, τέλεια τα έργα του·

οι δρόμοι του όλοι με δικαιοσύνη.

Θεός πιστός και δίχως αδικία,

Θεός ευθύς και δίκαιος.

5 Μα σεις πράξατε το κακό,

μες στη βρωμιά βουτήξατε,*Το πρώτο τμήμα του στ. στα εβρ. είναι ασαφές.

δεν είστε πια παιδιά του.

Γενιά της διαστροφής και της ψευτιάς!

6 Είν’ αυτός τρόπος για να φέρεσαι στον Κύριο,

λαέ ανόητε, άμυαλε;

Αυτός δεν είναι ο πατέρας σου, που σ’ εξαγόρασε;

Αυτός δεν είναι που σε δημιούργησε,

που σ’ έκανε λαό;

7 Τις μέρες τις παλιές θυμήσου,

σκέψου το πέρασμα των χρόνων

από γενιά σ’ άλλη γενιά.

Ρώτησε τον πατέρα σου, και θα σ’ το μάθει,

τους πρεσβυτέρους σου και θα σ’ το πουν.

8 Όταν έδινε ο Ύψιστος στο κάθε έθνος τη χώρα του,

όταν χώριζε τους ανθρώπους,

των λαών τα σύνορα τα όρισε,

ανάλογα με τους αγγέλους τους.*με τους αγγέλους τους, το πιθανό κείμενο (βλ. Δαν 10:20-21). Το εβρ. έχει κατά λ. «τους Ισραηλίτες».

9 Αλλά μερίδιο κράτησε δικό του, το λαό τού Ισραήλ,

και πήρε αυτός στην προστασία του

του Ιακώβ τους απογόνους.

10 Βρήκε ο Κύριος τον Ισραήλ στην έρημο

μες στης ερμιάς τη φρίκη

και στων θεριών τα ουρλιαχτά.

Τον φρόντισε, τον παιδαγώγησε,

και τον εφύλαξε καθώς την κόρη των ματιών του.

11 Σαν τον αετό, που προστατεύει τη φωλιά του,

πετάει πάνω απ’ τα μικρά του

και τα μαθαίνει να πετούν,

τις φτερούγες του απλώνει, τα παίρνει,

και τα σηκώνει στ’ απλωμένα του φτερά.

12 Μόνος ο Κύριος το λαό του οδήγησε,

κανένας δεν τον βοήθησε ξένος θεός.

13 Τον εγκατέστησε στης χώρας τα ψηλώματα,

τον έθρεψε με τα γεννήματα του αγρού.

Του ’δωσε μέλι να ρουφήξει από τα βράχια

και λάδι από λιόδεντρα που φύτρωσαν

στις πέτρες τις σκληρές.

14 Βούτυρο του ’δωσε αγελαδινό

και γάλα πρόβειο,

κρέας από αρνιά κι από κριάρια,

θρέμματα της Βασάν,

κι από τραγιά·

αλεύρι από το στάρι το καλύτερο,

κρασί από των σταφυλιών το αίμα.

15 Και πλούτισε ο Ισραήλ

κι άρχισε να κλωτσάει·

πάχυνε, χόντρυνε, έγινε θρεφτάρι,

και εγκατέλειψε το Θεό, τον πλάστη του

και καταφρόνεσε το Βράχο

που σωτηρία τού δίνει.

16 Προκάλεσαν τη ζηλοτυπία του

λατρεύοντας ξένους θεούς,

τον ερεθίσανε με βδελυρές λατρείες.

17 Θυσίασαν στους δαίμονες, που δεν είναι θεοί,

σε θεούς, που δεν γνώρισαν,

καινούριους, νιοφερμένους,

που δεν είχαν γι’ αυτούς

οι πρόγονοί τους κανένα σεβασμό.

18 Το Βράχο που σε γέννησε, Ισραήλ, τον παραμέλησες

και λησμόνησες το Θεό, τον πλαστουργό σου.

19 Ο Κύριος το είδε και οργίστηκε

κι απόρριψε τις κόρες και τους γιους του.

20 Και είπε: «Θα τους αποστραφώ

να δω τι θ’ απογίνουν.

Γιατί αυτοί είναι γενιά διεστραμμένη,

παιδιά, χωρίς καθόλου πίστη μέσα τους.

21 Προκάλεσαν τη ζηλοτυπία μου

λατρεύοντας ανύπαρκτους θεούς,

μ’ εξόργισαν με τα είδωλά τους.

Αλλά κι εγώ θα προκαλέσω τη ζηλοτυπία τους

μ’ εκείνους που δεν είν’ αληθινός λαός,

με ένα έθνος ανόητο θα διεγείρω την οργή τους.

22 Ναι, ο θυμός μου άρπαξε φωτιά

και καίει ίσαμε τα βάθη του άδη,

και κατατρώει τη γη με τους καρπούς της

και λιώνει τα θεμέλια των βουνών.

23 »Θα επισωρεύσω συμφορές επάνω τους,

κι ενάντια τους τα βέλη μου θ’ αδειάσω.

24 Θα εξαντληθούν από την πείνα και θα λιώσουν

από τον πυρετό κι από φαρμακερό κεντρί·

τα δόντια άγριων θηρίων θα τους στείλω,

και το δηλητήριο των ερπετών της γης.

25 Έξω το ξίφος θα θερίζει

και μέσα ο τρόμος

τους νέους και τις νέες θα σκοτώνει,

τα βρέφη και τους γέροντες.

26 »Θα τους διασκόρπιζα,

τελείως θα τους εξαφάνιζα,

κανένας να μην τους θυμάται πια,

27 αν δεν φοβόμουν των εχθρών την πρόκληση·

μήπως οι εχθροί τους το παρεξηγήσουν

μήπως και πουν: "με τη δική μας δύναμη νικήσαμε,

δεν είναι ο Κύριος που έπραξε όλα ετούτα".

28 Αυτοί είναι λαός ανόητος,

και η σοφία ολότελα τους λείπει.

29 Λίγη φρόνηση να ’χαν, θα καταλάβαιναν·

θα συλλογίζονταν τι έμελλε να πάθουν:

30 Πώς θα μπορούσε ένας να καταδιώξει χίλιους

και δυο να τρέψουν σε φυγή δέκα χιλιάδες,

αν δεν τους είχε ο Βράχος τους πουλήσει

αν δεν τους είχε εγκαταλείψει ο Κύριος;

31 Γιατί ο βράχος των εχθρών μας

δεν είναι σαν το Βράχο μας,

κι αυτό μπορούνε να το κρίνουνε κι οι ίδιοι ακόμα.

32 Αλλά το κλήμα τους είν’ από τη ρίζα των Σοδόμων

κι απ’ των Γομόρρων τους αγρούς τα σταφύλια τους,

σταφύλια δηλητηριώδη και πικρά.

33 Και το κρασί τους, δηλητήριο ερπετών,

φοβερό έχιδνας φαρμάκι.

34 Αυτό είναι που εγώ, ο Κύριος,

ενάντιά τους το φυλάω

και το ’χω σφραγισμένο στις αποθήκες μου.

35 Σ’ εμένα ανήκει η εκδίκηση κι η ανταπόδοση

τη μέρα που θα τρικλίζουνε τα πόδια τους.

Κοντά είν’ η μέρα που αυτοί θ’ αφανιστούν

κι ό,τι τους περιμένει δεν θ’ αργήσει».

36 Αλήθεια, ο Κύριος θα δικαιώσει το λαό του,

όταν θα δει πως χάθηκε η δύναμή τους

και δεν υπάρχει πια, ούτε δούλος ούτ’ ελεύθερος.

Θ’ αλλάξει γνώμη για χάρη των δούλων του.

37 Τότε ο Κύριος θα πει: «Πού είναι οι θεοί τους;

ο βράχος, που σ’ αυτόν κατέφευγαν;

38 Αυτοί οι θεοί που τρώγανε το πάχος των θυσιών τους

και πίναν’ των σπονδών τους το κρασί;

Ας σηκωθούνε να σας βοηθήσουν,

να σας σκεπάσουν με την προστασία τους!

39 Δείτε, τώρα, ότι εγώ, εγώ μονάχα είμαι,

και δεν υπάρχει εκτός από μένα άλλος θεός.

Εγώ θανατώνω κι εγώ δίνω ζωή,

εγώ πληγώνω κι εγώ θεραπεύω

και δεν μπορεί κανείς να ελευθερώσει κάποιον από τα χέρια μου.

40 Στον ουρανό το χέρι μου σηκώνω

και ορκίζομαι:

"όπως είν’ αλήθεια ότι υπάρχω αιώνια,

41 έτσι είν’ αλήθεια

πως θ’ ακονίσω τ’ αστραφτερό μου το σπαθί

και θα αρχίσω ν’ αποδίδω δικαιοσύνη·

τότε θα πάρω εκδίκηση απ’ τους εχθρούς μου,

θα κάνω ανταπόδοση σ’ αυτούς που με μισούν".

42 Τα βέλη μου θα τα μεθύσω με αίμα

και το σπαθί μου θα κατατρώει κορμιά,

αίμα των πληγωμένων και των αιχμαλώτων,

κεφάλια των αρχηγών του εχθρού».

43 Έθνη, δοξάστε του Κυρίου το λαό!

Ο Κύριος εκδικιέται το αίμα των δούλων του·

παίρνει εκδίκηση απ’ τους εχθρούς του

και του λαού του τη χώρα θα καθαρίσει.

44,45 Ο Μωυσής, έχοντας μαζί του και τον Ιησού, γιο του Ναυή, ήρθε και απήγγειλε σε όλο το λαό του Ισραήλ αυτό το τραγούδι. Όταν τελείωσε, 46 τους είπε: «Βάλτε τα στην καρδιά σας όλα αυτά τα λόγια του νόμου, που εγώ σας είπα σήμερα. Να τα μεταδώσετε στα παιδιά σας ως εντολές, για να φροντίζουν να τα εφαρμόζουν. 47 Αυτά για σας δεν είναι λόγια αδειανά, αλλά είναι η ίδια σας η ζωή. Χάρη στα λόγια αυτά θα ζήσετε πολλά χρόνια στη χώρα που θα πάρετε ιδιοκτησία σας, αφού περάσετε τον Ιορδάνη».

48 Ο Κύριος μίλησε στο Μωυσή την ίδια εκείνη μέρα και του είπε· 49 «Γύρισε να πας στην οροσειρά Αβαρίμ, που βρίσκεται στη Μωάβ, απέναντι από την Ιεριχώ· ανέβα στην κορυφή του όρους Νεβώ και κοίταξε τη Χαναάν, τη χώρα που δίνω στους Ισραηλίτες για ιδιοκτησία τους. 50 Θα πεθάνεις πάνω σ’ εκείνο στο βουνό και θα πας μαζί με τους προγόνους σου, όπως πέθανε κι ο αδερφός σου Ααρών στο όρος Ωρ, και πήγε μαζί με τους προγόνους του. 51 Εσύ κι ο Ααρών απιστήσατε σ’ εμένα και δεν προβάλατε την αγιότητά μου στα μάτια των Ισραηλιτών, όταν βρισκόσασταν στα νερά της Μεριβά στην Κάδης, στην έρημο Σιν. 52 Γι’ αυτό λοιπόν, θα δεις από μακριά τη χώρα που δίνω στους Ισραηλίτες, αλλά δεν θα μπεις σ’ αυτήν».

39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. 40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. 41 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. 42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. 43 Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.*32.43 Rejoice…: or, Praise his people, ye nations: or, Sing ye
