1,2 Στη συνέχεια ο Μωυσής είπε: «Αν υπακούτε πραγματικά στα λόγια του Κυρίου, του Θεού σας, και προσέχετε να εφαρμόζετε όλες τις εντολές του, που εγώ σας δίνω σήμερα, ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας θα σας κάνει το πρώτο απ’ όλα τα έθνη της γης, και θα έρθουν πάνω σας ετούτες οι ευλογίες: 3 Ευλογημένος θα ’σαι στην πόλη και στο χωράφι. 4 Ευλογημένος θα ’ναι της κοιλιάς σου ο καρπός, και ο καρπός της γης σου, και ο καρπός των ζωντανών σου, των γελαδιών σου οι γέννες και των προβάτων σου. 5 Ευλογημένο θα ’ναι το καλάθι σου κι ευλογημένη η σκάφη που ζυμώνεις το ψωμί σου. 6 Ευλογημένος θα ’σαι, σ’ ό,τι κι αν κάνεις. 7 Ο Κύριος θα σου παραδώσει τους εχθρούς σου, αυτούς που θα ξεσηκωθούν να σε χτυπήσουν, νικημένους μπροστά σου. Από έναν δρόμο θα έρχονται εναντίον σου, κι από εφτά δρόμους θα φεύγουν από μπρος σου.

8 »Ο Κύριος θα διατάξει την ευλογία να ’ναι μαζί σου στις αποθήκες σου και σ’ ό,τι επιχειρείς, και θα σε ευλογήσει στη χώρα που σου δίνει. 9 Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου θα σε αναδείξει σε δικό του λαό, αφιερωμένον σ’ αυτόν, όπως με όρκο σού υποσχέθηκε, αν εκτελείς τις εντολές του και βαδίζεις στο δρόμο του. 10 Τότε θα δουν όλοι οι λαοί της γης, ότι ο Κύριος σε προστατεύει, και θα σε φοβούνται.

11 »Ο Κύριος θα σου δώσει άφθονα τ’ αγαθά, πλούσιο της κοιλιάς σου τον καρπό, και τον καρπό των ζωντανών σου και τον καρπό της γης σου, στη χώρα που ο Κύριος υποσχέθηκε στους προγόνους σου πως θα σου δώσει. 12 Ο Κύριος για χάρη σου θ’ ανοίγει τις δεξαμενές του νερού στον ουρανό, για να δίνει βροχή στη χώρα σου, στον κατάλληλο καιρό και να ευλογεί όλα σου τα έργα. Σε πολλά έθνη θα δανείζεις, ενώ εσύ δεν θα ’χεις ανάγκη να δανείζεσαι. 13 Έτσι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σου θα σε κάνει αρχηγό και όχι ουραγό. Πάντα θα υπερέχεις και ποτέ δεν θα μειονεκτείς, αν τηρείς τις εντολές του που εγώ σήμερα σου δίνω κι αν φροντίζεις να τις εφαρμόζεις. 14 Να μην ξεφύγετε από καμιά εντολή που εγώ σας δίνω σήμερα, ούτε δεξιά ούτε αριστερά, για να ακολουθήσετε άλλους θεούς και να τους λατρέψετε».

15 «Αν όμως δεν υπακούσετε στον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, και δεν προσέχετε να εφαρμόζετε τις εντολές του και τους νόμους του, που εγώ σας δίνω σήμερα, τότε θα σας βρουν και θα πέσουν πάνω σας όλες ετούτες οι κατάρες: 16 Καταραμένος θα ’σαι στην πόλη και στο χωράφι. 17 Καταραμένο θα ’ναι το καλάθι σου και η σκάφη που ζυμώνεις το ψωμί σου. 18 Καταραμένος της κοιλιάς σου ο καρπός και ο καρπός της γης σου, των γελαδιών σου οι γέννες και των προβάτων σου. 19 Καταραμένος θα ’σαι, σ’ ό,τι κι αν κάνεις. 20 Αν εγκαταλείψεις τον Κύριο πράττοντας το κακό, αυτός θα στείλει πάνω σου την κατάρα, τον τρόμο και τη θλίψη σ’ ό,τι κι αν καταπιάνεσαι· και πολύ γρήγορα θα καταστραφείς τελείως.

21 »Ο Κύριος θα επιτρέψει να σε βρει θανατικό, ωσότου σ’ εξαφανίσει από τη χώρα που πηγαίνεις να την πάρεις ιδιοκτησία σου. 22 Ο Κύριος θα σε χτυπήσει με φθίση, με πυρετό, με ρίγος, με καύσωνα, με ξηρασία, με μαρασμό κι αρρώστια των φυτών. Όλα αυτά θα σε καταδιώκουν ωσότου καταστραφείς. 23 Χαλκός θα είν’ ο ουρανός πάνω από το κεφάλι σου και σίδερο η γη κάτω απ’ τα πόδια σου. 24 Ο Κύριος θα μετατρέψει τη βροχή στη χώρα σου σε σκόνη και σε χώμα. Θα πέφτει πάνω σου απ’ τον ουρανό, ώσπου να εξοντωθείς.

25 »Ο Κύριος θα επιτρέψει να σε νικούν οι εχθροί σου. Από ένα δρόμο θα βαδίζεις εναντίον τους, κι από εφτά δρόμους θα φεύγεις από μπροστά τους. Όλα τα βασίλεια της γης θα φρίττουν όταν θα βλέπουν το κατάντημά σου. 26 Το πτώμα σου θα γίνει τροφή για τ’ αρπαχτικά πουλιά του ουρανού και για τα θηρία της γης· και δε θα υπάρχει ούτ’ ένας να τα διώξει. 27 Ο Κύριος θα σε χτυπήσει με το αιγυπτιακό έλκος, με έκζεμα και ψώρα, αρρώστιες αγιάτρευτες. 28 Ο Κύριος θα σε χτυπήσει με τρέλα, με τύφλωση και με σύγχυση του μυαλού. 29 Μες στο καταμεσήμερο θα βαδίζεις ψηλαφώντας, όπως μες στο σκοτάδι του ο τυφλός. Τίποτε απ’ ό,τι κάνεις δεν θα πετυχαίνει· πάντα θα σε καταπιέζουν και θα σε ληστεύουν και δε θα βρίσκεται κανείς για να σε σώσει.

30 »Θ’ αρραβωνιάζεσαι γυναίκα, κι άλλος μαζί της θα πλαγιάζει. Θα χτίζεις σπίτι, μα δε θα κατοικείς σ’ αυτό. Αμπέλι θα φυτεύεις, μα δε θα το τρυγάς. 31 Το βόδι σου θα το σφάζουν μπροστά σου, αλλά απ’ το κρέας του εσύ δεν θα τρως. Θ’ αρπάζουν το γαϊδούρι σου από μπροστά σου και σε σένα δεν θα ξαναγυρνά. Θα παραδίνονται τα πρόβατά σου στους εχθρούς σου και δε θα υπάρχει ούτε ένας να σου παρασταθεί. 32 Οι γιοι και οι θυγατέρες σου θα παραδίνονται σ’ άλλον λαό· εσύ θα το βλέπεις και τα μάτια σου θα λιώνουν την κάθε μέρα να τους καρτεράς, μα δε θα μπορείς τίποτα να κάνεις. 33 Της γης σου τους καρπούς και τη σοδειά ολόκληρη του κόπου σου, ένας λαός που δεν τον ξέρεις θα τα τρώει· κι εσύ, μονάχα θα καταπιέζεσαι και θα τσακίζεσαι την κάθε μέρα.

34 »Κι από το θέαμα που θα βλέπουνε τα μάτια σου, θα τρελαθείς. 35 Ο Κύριος θα σε χτυπήσει με κακές πληγές στα γόνατα και στους μηρούς, που απ’ αυτές να γιατρευτείς δε θα μπορείς –από των ποδιών σου τις πατούσες ίσαμε της κεφαλής σου την κορφή. 36 Ο Κύριος θα σε παραδώσει, εσένα και το βασιλιά σου που θα ’χεις βάλει για αρχηγό σου, σ’ έναν λαό που ούτ’ εσύ, ούτε οι πρόγονοί σου τον γνωρίζαν, και θα λατρέψεις εκεί άλλους θεούς, φτιαγμένους από ξύλο κι από πέτρα. 37 Θα προκαλείς τη φρίκη, το χλευασμό και τον περίγελο σ’ όλους εκείνους τους λαούς, όπου ο Κύριος θα σε φέρει.

38 »Σπόρο πολύ θα ρίχνεις στο χωράφι, μα λίγο θα μαζεύεις, γιατί η ακρίδα θα τον έχει καταφάει. 39 Αμπέλια θα φυτεύεις και θα τα καλλιεργείς, μα ούτε κρασί θα πίνεις ούτε καν θα τρυγάς, γιατί θα τα ’χει καταφάει το σκουλήκι. 40 Λιόδεντρα θα ’χεις σ’ όλη σου τη χώρα, αλλά δε θα ’χεις λάδι ν’ αλειφτείς, γιατί οι ελιές θα πέφτουν. 41 Γιους θα γεννάς και θυγατέρες, δικά σου όμως δε θα μπορείς να τα ’χεις, γιατί θα τα πηγαίνουν στην αιχμαλωσία. 42 Όλα τα δένδρα σου και τους καρπούς της γης σου, τα σκουλήκια θα τα χαίρονται. 43 Οι ξένοι που θα ζουν ανάμεσά σας θα προοδεύουν πιότερο από σένα, όλο και πιο ψηλά· ενώ εσύ ολοένα και πιο χαμηλά θα πέφτεις. 44 Αυτοί θα σου δανείζουν, εσύ δε θα ’χεις πια να τους δανείσεις. Αυτοί θα είν’ οι αρχηγοί κι εσύ ο ουραγός.

45 »Όλες ετούτες οι κατάρες θα σας βρουν και θα πέσουν πάνω σας, ωσότου αφανιστείτε, αν δεν υπακούσετε τον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, και δεν εφαρμόσετε τις εντολές του και τους νόμους του, εκείνα που σας πρόσταξε. 46 Κι αυτά θα ’ναι παντοτινά σημεία κι αποδείξεις θαυμαστές σ’ εσάς και στους απογόνους σας.

47 »Αν δεν λατρεύσετε τον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, με χαρά και μ’ όλη σας την καρδιά, όταν θα έχετε όλα τ’ αγαθά σας άφθονα, 48 τότε θα γίνετε δούλοι στους εχθρούς σας, που θα τους στείλει ο Κύριος εναντίον σας. Θα πεινάτε, θα διψάτε, θα είστε γυμνοί και θα στερείστε τα πάντα· στον τράχηλό σας θα βάλει σιδερένιο ζυγό, ώσπου να σας εξοντώσει. 49 Ο Κύριος θα ξεσηκώσει εναντίον σας ένα έθνος από μακριά, από της γης την άκρη, που επιτίθεται όπως ο αετός· ένα έθνος, που τη γλώσσα του δεν θα μπορείτε να καταλάβετε. 50 Θα ’ναι ένα έθνος με άγριο πρόσωπο, που δε θα σέβεται τον γέροντα κι ούτε τον νέο θα σπλαχνίζεται. 51 Θα καταφάει τον καρπό των ζωντανών σας και τον καρπό της γης σας, ώσπου ν’ αφανιστείτε· δε θα σας αφήσει ούτε στάρι, ούτε κρασί, ούτε λάδι, ούτε τις γέννες των γελαδιών και των προβάτων σας, ωσότου σας εξαφανίσει. 52 Θα πολιορκήσει όλες σας τις πόλεις, τα ψηλά και δυνατά σας τείχη, μέσα στα οποία νιώθατε ασφαλείς, ώσπου να πέσουν, παντού στη χώρα που θα σας δώσει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας. 53 Κι όταν θα σας πολιορκεί ο εχθρός σας και θα στενεύει τον κλοιό του απελπιστικά, τότε εσείς θ’ αναγκαστείτε να φάτε τα ίδια τα παιδιά σας, θα καταβροχθίσετε τις σάρκες των γιων σας και των θυγατέρων σας, που σας έδωσε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας. 54 Ο τρυφερότερος και ο πιο ευαίσθητος άνθρωπος ανάμεσά σας θα βλέπει με κακό μάτι τον αδερφό του και την αγαπημένη του γυναίκα και τα υπόλοιπα παιδιά του, που θα ’χουν απομείνει. 55 Σε κανέναν απ’ αυτούς δε θα δίνει από τις σάρκες των παιδιών του· θα τις τρώει όλες αυτός, γιατί τίποτε πια δεν θα του έχει απομείνει στη διάρκεια της πολιορκίας· τόση θα είναι η απόγνωση που θα ’χει φέρει ο εχθρός σας σ’ όλες τις πόλεις σας. 56 Η τρυφερότερη κι η πιο ευαίσθητη γυναίκα ανάμεσά σας, που απ’ την ευαισθησία και τη χλιδή απέφευγε και το πόδι της ακόμα να πατήσει στη γη, τώρα θα βλέπει με κακό μάτι τον αγαπημένο της άντρα, το γιο της και την κόρη της. 57 Θα σκέφτεται να φάει κρυφά το νεογέννητο βρέφος της, ως και τον πλακούντα που θα βγει από την κοιλιά της, γιατί θα στερείται τα πάντα στη διάρκεια της πολιορκίας· τόση θα είναι η απόγνωση που θα έχει φέρει ο εχθρός σας στις πόλεις σας. *Βλ. 58 »Φροντίστε, λοιπόν, να εφαρμόζετε όλα τα λόγια του νόμου, τα γραμμένα σ’ αυτό το βιβλίο, και να σεβόσαστε αυτό το όνομα, το δοξασμένο και φοβερό, τον Κύριο το Θεό σας. 59 Αλλιώς, ο Κύριος θα φέρει σ’ εσάς και στους απογόνους σας φοβερές πληγές, μεγάλες και μακρόχρονες, αρρώστιες βαριές και χρόνιες. 60 Θα φέρει πάνω σας όλα τα πλήγματα που έφερε στους Αιγυπτίους, τα οποία τόσο σας είχαν τρομάξει· δε θα φεύγουν από πάνω σας. 61 Ακόμη ο Κύριος θα φέρει εναντίον σας ασθένειες και πληγές που δεν είναι γραμμένες σ’ αυτό το βιβλίο του νόμου, ώσπου να εξαφανιστείτε. 62 Και θ’ απομείνετε ελάχιστοι, εσείς που ήσασταν τόσοι πολλοί σαν τ’ άστρα του ουρανού, αν δεν υπακούσετε στον Κύριο, το Θεό σας.

63 »Όπως ο Κύριος χαιρόταν να σας κάνει ευτυχισμένους και πολυάριθμους, έτσι τώρα θα χαίρεται να σας καταστρέφει και να σας εξαφανίζει· θα ξεριζωθείτε από τη χώρα που πάτε να πάρετε για ιδιοκτησία σας. 64 Ο Κύριος θα σας διασκορπίσει ανάμεσα σ’ όλους τους λαούς, από τη μια άκρη της γης ως την άλλη· κι εκεί θα λατρέψετε άλλους θεούς, φτιαγμένους από ξύλο κι από πέτρα, που ούτε εσείς τους γνωρίζατε ούτε οι πρόγονοί σας. 65 Αλλά κι ανάμεσα στα έθνη εκείνα δεν θα ησυχάσετε. Τα πόδια σας δεν θα βρίσκουν τόπο ν’ αναπαυτούν· ο Κύριος θα βάλει τον τρόμο στην καρδιά σας, θα κάνει τα μάτια σας να σβήνουν, την ψυχή σας να μαραίνεται. 66 Η ζωή σας θα κρέμεται από μια κλωστή· νύχτα και μέρα θα φοβάστε και θ’ αμφιβάλλετε για την ίδια σας την ύπαρξη. 67 Το πρωί θα εύχεστε να ήταν βράδυ και το βράδυ θα εύχεστε να ήταν πρωί. Τόσος θα είναι ο φόβος που θα πλημμυρίζει την καρδιά σας από το θέαμα που θ’ αντικρύζετε. 68 Ο Κύριος θα σας πάει πάλι με πλοία στην Αίγυπτο· θα πάρετε το δρόμο πίσω για τη χώρα, που σας υποσχέθηκα ότι πια δε θα την ξαναδείτε. Εκεί θα θέλετε να πουληθείτε στους εχθρούς σας σκλάβοι και σκλάβες και δε θα υπάρχει κανείς για να σας αγοράσει».

45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee: 46 And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. 47 Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee. 49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;*28.49 understand: Heb. hear 50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor shew favour to the young:*28.50 of fierce…: Heb. strong of face 51 And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy land, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee either corn, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy kine, or flocks of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee. 52 And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. 53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee:*28.53 body: Heb. belly 54 So that the man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children which he shall leave: 55 So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. 56 The tender and delicate woman among you, which would not adventure to set the sole of her foot upon the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter, 57 And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.*28.57 young one: Heb. afterbirth 58 If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; 59 Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. 60 Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee. 61 Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.*28.61 bring: Heb. cause to ascend 62 And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God. 63 And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. 64 And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. 65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: 66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: 67 In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 68 And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.
