1 Τότε άκουσα τον Κύριο να φωνάζει με δυνατή φωνή και να λέει: «Πλησιάστε τιμωροί της πόλης, κρατώντας καθένας στο χέρι του το καταστροφικό του όπλο». 2 Ήρθαν τότε έξι άντρες από την κατεύθυνση της άνω πύλης, που βλέπει στο βορρά, καθένας κρατώντας το όπλο του για τη σφαγή, και μαζί τους ήταν ένας άντρας, ντυμένος στα λινά,*λινά. Υπονοείται η ενδυμασία ιερέως. με ένα μελανοδοχείο γραμματέα στη μέση του. Ήρθαν και στάθηκαν δίπλα στο χάλκινο θυσιαστήριο.

3 Η δόξα του Θεού του Ισραήλ είχε σηκωθεί από τα χερουβίμ,*χερουβίμ. Εδώ εννοούνται τα όντα του αρχικού οράματος του προφήτη (κεφ. 1:5-28). πάνω στα οποία αναπαυόταν, και είχε έρθει στο κατώφλι του ναού. Έπειτα ο Κύριος φώναξε τον άντρα, που ήταν ντυμένος στα λινά και είχε το μελανοδοχείο του γραμματέα στη μέση του, 4 και του είπε: «Πήγαινε, διάσχισε την Ιερουσαλήμ και βάλε σημάδι στα μέτωπα των ανθρώπων εκείνων που στενάζουν και θλίβονται για τις βδελυρές πράξεις που γίνονται μέσα στην πόλη». 5 Και στους άλλους είπε, έτσι που ν’ ακούω κι εγώ: «Ακολουθήστε αυτόν τον άντρα στην πόλη και σκορπίστε το θάνατο· μη λυπηθείτε ούτε να διστάσετε για κανέναν. 6 Σφάξτε τους όλους αυτούς, γέρους, νέους και παρθένες, μικρά παιδιά και μανάδες· εξοντώστε τους τελείως. Αλλά μην αγγίξετε κανέναν που έχει στο μέτωπό του το σημάδι. Αρχίστε από το αγιαστήριό μου». Έτσι άρχισαν από τους πρεσβυτέρους, που ήταν μπροστά στο ναό. 7 Ύστερα τους είπε: «Γεμίστε τις αυλές με σκοτωμένους έστω κι αν μολύνετε το ναό μ’ αυτούς. Μετά βγείτε έξω!» Και βγήκαν και σκότωναν στην πόλη.

8 Ενώ αυτοί σκότωναν, εγώ ήμουν μόνος· έπεσα τότε με το πρόσωπο στη γη και φώναξα: «Αχ, Κύριε, Θεέ! Θα ξεσπάσεις οργισμένος και εναντίον της Ιερουσαλήμ; Σκοπεύεις δηλαδή να καταστρέψεις όλους τους Ισραηλίτες, που έχουν απομείνει;» 9 Εκείνος μου απάντησε: «Η ενοχή των κατοίκων του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα είναι πάρα πολύ μεγάλη· η χώρα και η πόλη είναι γεμάτη εγκλήματα και αδικίες. "Ο Κύριος εγκατέλειψε τη χώρα", λένε, "ο Κύριος δεν βλέπει". 10 Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ δε θα τους λυπηθώ ούτε θα τους δείξω έλεος. Θ’ ανταποδώσω τα έργα τους πάνω στο κεφάλι τους». 11 Τότε ο άνθρωπος με τα λινά και το μελανοδοχείο στη μέση αποκρίθηκε: «Έκανα όπως με διέταξες».

And he called to the man clothed with linen, which had the writer’s inkhorn by his side; 4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.*9.4 set a mark: Heb. mark a mark

5 And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity:*9.5 mine hearing: Heb. mine ears 6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.*9.6 utterly: Heb. to destruction 7 And he said unto them, Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and slew in the city.

8 And it came to pass, while they were slaying them, and I was left, that I fell upon my face, and cried, and said, Ah Lord GOD! wilt thou destroy all the residue of Israel in thy pouring out of thy fury upon Jerusalem? 9 Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath forsaken the earth, and the LORD seeth not.*9.9 full of blood: Heb. filled with, etc*9.9 perverseness: or, wresting of judgment 10 And as for me also, mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity, but I will recompense their way upon their head. 11 And, behold, the man clothed with linen, which had the inkhorn by his side, reported the matter, saying, I have done as thou hast commanded me.*9.11 reported…: Heb. returned the word
