1 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: 2 «Εσύ, άνθρωπε,*Εσύ, άνθρωπε. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 2:1. ετοιμάσου να κρίνεις την πόλη των φονιάδων, την Ιερουσαλήμ. Φανέρωσέ της όλες τις βδελυρές της πράξεις. 3 Πες της: "άκου, πόλη, τι λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός: Σκοτώνεις αθώους και προκαλείς την ημέρα της καταστροφής σου, λατρεύεις τα βδελυρά είδωλα και μολύνεις το έδαφός σου. 4 Είσαι ένοχη για τα φονικά που σε βαραίνουν και μολυσμένη για τα είδωλα που κατασκεύασες. Προκάλεσες έτσι την ημέρα της καταστροφής σου· ήρθε το τέλος σου. Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ θα κάνω να σε εμπαίζουν τα έθνη και να σε περιφρονούν όλες οι χώρες. 5 Είσαι ξακουστή για την ανηθικότητά σου και γεμάτη αναταραχές· όλοι οι μακρινοί και οι γειτονικοί σου λαοί θα γελάνε μ’ εσένα.

6 "Δες τους άρχοντες του Ισραήλ! Σπαταλούν τη δύναμή τους για να κάνουν φονικά. 7 Οι κάτοικοί σου καταφρονούν τους γονείς τους, καταπιέζουν τους ξένους που ζουν ανάμεσά τους και αδικούν τις χήρες και τα ορφανά. 8 Ασεβούν προς τους τόπους της λατρείας μου και βεβηλώνουν το Σάββατό μου. 9 Ανάμεσά σου υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που συκοφαντούν για να δολοφονήσουν, που τρώνε απαγορευμένα σφαχτά και κάνουν ασέλγειες. 10 Ανάμεσά σου υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που πλαγιάζουν με τη γυναίκα του πατέρα τους και με γυναίκες στην περίοδο που είναι ακάθαρτες. 11 Άλλος μοιχεύει με τη γυναίκα του πλησίον του, άλλος ατιμάζει τη νύφη του, δηλαδή τη γυναίκα του γιου του, άλλος πλαγιάζει με την ετεροθαλή αδερφή του, κόρη του πατέρα του. 12 Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που δωροδοκούνται για να καταδικάσουν σε θάνατο, πλουτίζουν με την τοκογλυφία, εκμεταλλεύονται τους συμπατριώτες τους για να πλουτίζουν. Κι εμένα, τον Κύριο το Θεό, μ’ έχουν τελείως ξεχάσει.

13 "Εξοργίζομαι για τις απάτες σου και για το αθώο αίμα που χύνεται στο έδαφός σου. 14 Θα ’χεις άραγε το θάρρος και τη δύναμη ν’ αντέξεις το χτύπημα, όταν θα λογαριαστώ μαζί σου; Εγώ, ο Κύριος, μίλησα κι αυτό που είπα θα το πραγματοποιήσω. 15 Θα διασκορπίσω τους κατοίκους σου ανάμεσα στα έθνη, θα τους διασπείρω στις ξένες χώρες, θα σε εξαφανίσω. 16 Θ’ ατιμαστώ εξαιτίας σου μπροστά στα έθνη, αλλά θα πεισθείς ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος"».

17 Μου είπε ακόμα ο Κύριος: 18 «Άνθρωπε, όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες για μένα είναι σαν τη σκουριά. Ένα άχρηστο μείγμα από χαλκό, κασσίτερο, σίδερο και μολύβι, ό,τι απομένει μέσα στο καμίνι αφού το ασήμι καθαριστεί. 19-21 Πες, λοιπόν, σ’ αυτούς: "ακούστε τι λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός: Έτσι που γίνατε όλοι σας σαν τη σκουριά, θα σας συγκεντρώσω με φλογερό θυμό μέσα στην Ιερουσαλήμ, όπως μαζεύουνε τα μεταλλεύματα που περιέχουν ασήμι, χαλκό, σίδερο, μολύβι και κασσίτερο μες στο καμίνι, κι ανάβουν δυνατή φωτιά για να τα λιώσουν. Έτσι θα σας λιώσω κι εγώ. 22 Όπως λιώνει το ασήμι στο καμίνι, έτσι θα λιώσετε κι εσείς μέσα στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Τότε θα μάθετε ότι εγώ ο Κύριος, εξαπέλυσα πάνω σας την οργή μου"».

23 Μετά πρόσθεσε ο Κύριος: 24 «Πες στους Ισραηλίτες, άνθρωπε, πως η χώρα τους είναι τόσο ακάθαρτη, ώστε δεν θα πέσει πάνω της βροχή όσον καιρό είμαι μαζί της αγανακτισμένος. 25 Μέσα στη χώρα αυτή οι άρχοντές της*οι άρχοντές της, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «συνωμοσία των προφητών της». Με τον όρο νοείται η δικαστική αρμοδιότητα των αρχόντων του λαού. είναι σαν λιοντάρι που βρυχιέται, καθώς κατασπαράζει τη λεία του. Καταβροχθίζουν ανθρώπους, αρπάζουν θησαυρούς και πολύτιμα πράγματα, πληθαίνουν τις χήρες.

26 »Οι ιερείς της παραβιάζουν το νόμο μου και μολύνουν τους τόπους λατρείας μου. Δεν κάνουν διάκριση ανάμεσα στο άγιο και στο κοσμικό· δε διδάσκουν τη διαφορά ανάμεσα στο ακάθαρτο και στο καθαρό κι αδιαφορούνε για τα Σάββατά μου. Κανένας σεβασμός για μένα δεν υπάρχει ανάμεσά τους.

27 »Οι άρχοντές*άρχοντές της. Βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 25. της είναι σαν τους λύκους που ξεσκίζουν τη λεία τους, χύνουν αίμα, καταστρέφουν ανθρώπους για να ληστέψουν τα αγαθά τους.

28 »Οι προφήτες της σκεπάζουν όλες αυτές τις αμαρτίες με ψεύτικα οράματα και δίνουν ψεύτικους χρησμούς. Λένε: "αυτά τα είπε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός", ενώ εγώ, ο Κύριος, δεν μίλησα.

29 »Οι ισχυροί της χώρας καταπιέζουν και ληστεύουν· αδικούν τον φτωχό κι εκείνον που έχει ανάγκη και εκβιάζουν τον ξένο που παροικεί στη χώρα.

30 »Έψαξα ανάμεσά τους να βρω έναν άνθρωπο έτοιμο να επισκευάσει το τείχος ή να σταθεί στ’ ανοίγματα των οχυρών απέναντί μου και να υπερασπιστεί τη χώρα για να μην την καταστρέψω, μα δε βρήκα ούτ’ έναν. 31 Γι’ αυτό σκόρπισα πάνω τους την αγανάκτησή μου και με τη φλογερή οργή μου τους εξαφάνισα. Τους έκανα έτσι να υποστούν τις συνέπειες της συμπεριφοράς τους. Εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, το λέω».

1 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 2 Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations.*22.2 judge: or, plead for*22.2 bloody…: Heb. city of bloods?*22.2 shew her: Heb. make her know 3 Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself. 4 Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries. 5 Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed.*22.5 infamous…: Heb. polluted of name, much in vexation 6 Behold, the princes of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood.*22.6 power: Heb. arm 7 In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow.*22.7 oppression: or, deceit 8 Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my sabbaths. 9 In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.*22.9 that…: Heb. of slanders 10 In thee have they discovered their fathers’ nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was set apart for pollution. 11 And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.*22.11 one: or, every one*22.11 another: or, every one*22.11 lewdly: or, by lewdness 12 In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD.

13 Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee. 14 Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it. 15 And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee. 16 And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.*22.16 shalt take…: or, shalt be profaned

17 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 18 Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver.*22.18 dross of silver: Heb. drosses, etc 19 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem. 20 As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you.*22.20 As…: Heb. According to the gathering 21 Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof. 22 As silver is melted in the midst of the furnace, so shall ye be melted in the midst thereof; and ye shall know that I the LORD have poured out my fury upon you.

23 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 24 Son of man, say unto her, Thou art the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation. 25 There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. 26 Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.*22.26 violated: Heb. offered violence to 27 Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. 28 And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. 29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.*22.29 oppression: or, deceit*22.29 wrongfully: Heb. without right 30 And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. 31 Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.
