1 Ο Κύριος με πρόσταξε να τονίσω ένα θρηνητικό τραγούδι για τους άρχοντες των Ισραηλιτών.

2 Τι λέαινα*Με λέαινα συμβολίζεται εδώ η πόλη της Ιερουσαλήμ και η φυλή Ιούδα. ήταν η μάνα σας,

σε σύγκριση μ’ άλλα λιοντάρια!

Ξάπλωνε ανάμεσα στα λιονταρόπουλα

κι άφηνε τα μικρά της να θηλάσουν.

3 Ένα από τα μικρά της το μεγάλωσε

και έγινε δυνατό λιοντάρι.

Έμαθε να κατασπαράζει τη λεία του

και να καταβροχθίζει ανθρώπους.

4 Τα έθνη άκουσαν γι’ αυτό,

έτρεξαν, το παγίδεψαν σε λάκκο

και το τραβήξαν με άγκιστρα στην Αίγυπτο.*Οι στ. 3-4 αναφέρονται πιθανότατα στο βασιλιά Ιωάχαζ.

5 Όταν η μάνα του είδε πως γελάστηκε,

και πως ήταν η ελπίδα της χαμένη,

πήρε ένα άλλο από τα μικρά της

και το ’κανε λιοντάρι δυνατό.

6 Να ζήσει το ’φερε σ’ άλλα λιοντάρια ανάμεσα

κι έγινε ένα λιοντάρι δυνατό·

έμαθε να κατασπαράζει τη λεία του,

και να καταβροχθίζει ανθρώπους.

7 Τα φρούριά τους τα γκρέμιζε

τις πόλεις τους τις έκανε ερείπια·

οι κάτοικοι της χώρας έτρεμαν

στο άκουσμα του βρυχηθμού του.

8 Τότε εναντίον του τα έθνη παρατάχθηκαν,

από τις γύρω χώρες,

άπλωσαν γύρω του τα δίχτυα τους,

και το παγίδεψαν στο λάκκο.

9 Μ’ άγκιστρα το τραβήξανε

το βάλαν σε κλουβί

και το μετέφεραν στο βασιλιά της Βαβυλώνας.*Το δεύτερο λιοντάρι συμβολίζει πιθανώς το βασιλιά Ιωαχίν.

Μέσα σε φρούριο το ρίξανε

ώστε να μην ξανακουστεί ο βρυχηθμός του πια

πάνω στα όρη του Ισραήλ.

10 Ήταν η μάνα σας σαν την κληματαριά

τη φυτεμένη στων νερών τις όχθες·

ήταν καρπούς γεμάτη και κλαδιά,

απ’ τα πολλά νερά που την ποτίζαν.

11 Είχε κλωνάρια υπέροχα

κατάλληλα για σκήπτρα ηγεμόνων.

Ψηλότερα απ’ τ’ άλλα δέντρα ανέβαιναν

και θαύμαζαν τη λιγερή κορμοστασιά της

με τα πολλά της τα κλαδιά.

12 Αλλά με οργή και βία ξεριζώθηκε,

ρίχτηκε καταγής·

ο ανατολικός ο άνεμος ξέρανε τον καρπό της

και τον σκόρπισε.

Τα υπέροχα κλωνάρια της ξεράθηκαν

και στη φωτιά καήκαν.

13 Τώρα φυτεύτηκε σ’ έρημη,

άνυδρη και διψασμένη γη.

14 Φωτιά βγήκε από τον κορμό της

κι έκαψε τους καρπούς και τα κλωνάρια της·

δεν της έμεινε πια ούτ’ ένα απ’ τα υπέροχα κλαδιά,

κατάλληλο για σκήπτρο ηγεμόνα.

Αυτό το ποίημα έχει γίνει μοιρολόι.

10 Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.*19.10 in…: or, in thy quietness, or, in thy likeness 11 And she had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches. 12 But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them. 13 And now she is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty ground. 14 And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod to be a sceptre to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.
