1 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: 2 «Εσύ, άνθρωπε,*Εσύ, άνθρωπε. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 2:1. δείξε στην Ιερουσαλήμ πόσο βδελυρές είναι οι πράξεις της. 3 Πες της: "ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, λέει για σένα: Εσύ είσαι Χαναναία και απ’ την καταγωγή σου και απ’ τη γέννησή σου· ο πατέρας σου ήταν Αμορραίος και η μητέρα σου Χετταία.*Χαναναία...Αμορραίος...Χετταία. Πριν πέσει στα χέρια των Ισραηλιτών και καθιερωθεί μετά από το Δαβίδ πρωτεύουσα του κράτους, η Ιερουσαλήμ κατοικείτο από Ιεβουσαίους (Ιησ 15:62). Ο Ιεζεκιήλ επιμένει στη μη ισραηλιτική προϊστορία της Ιερουσαλήμ (βλ. Γεν 10:15-17).4 Τη μέρα που γεννήθηκες δεν σού ’κοψαν τον ομφάλιο λώρο ούτε σε πλύναν’ με νερό για να σε καθαρίσουν, δε σ’ έτριψαν με αλάτι ούτε σε δέσαν’ με φασκιές. 5 Κανείς δεν σε λυπήθηκε να κάνει κάτι απ’ όλα αυτά, αλλά σε πέταξαν μες στα χωράφια, όταν γεννήθηκες, χωρίς για τη ζωή σου να νοιαστούν.

6 "Εγώ πέρασα από κοντά σου, σε είδα να κυλιέσαι μες στο αίμα σου, κι έτσι, στην κατάσταση που βρισκόσουνα, σου είπα: Πάρε ζωή! 7 Και σ’ έκανα να μεγαλώσεις σαν το χορτάρι στον αγρό. Κι εσύ ψήλωσες κι έγινες πανέμορφη. Σχηματίστηκαν οι μαστοί σου και τα μαλλιά σου μάκρυναν· ήσουν όμως γυμνή κι ασκέπαστη.

8 "Ξαναπέρασα από κοντά σου κι είδα πως ήσουν στην ηλικία της παντρειάς. Τότε άπλωσα το μανδύα μου πάνω σου*άπλωσα... πάνω σου. Συμβολική πράξη αποδοχής μιας γυναίκας ως συζύγου (πρβλ. Ρουθ 3:9). και σκέπασα τη γυμνότητά σου· σου υποσχέθηκα πίστη κι έκανα εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, μαζί σου συμφωνία.*συμφωνία. Νοείται όχι μόνο συμφωνία προστασίας αλλά και γάμου. Μετά τον προφήτη Ωσηέ, η εικόνα του γάμου χρησιμοποιείται συχνά για να περιγραφεί η σχέση του Θεού με το λαό Ισραήλ (βλ. Ησ 54:4-8· Ιερ 2:2...) Έτσι έγινες δική μου.

9 "Έπειτα σ’ έπλυνα με νερό, σε καθάρισα από τα αίματα και σε άλειψα με λάδι. 10 Σ’ έντυσα με πολύχρωμα υφαντά φορέματα και σου φόρεσα σανδάλια καμωμένα από το πιο μαλακό δέρμα· έζωσα τη μέση σου με ωραίο λινό και σε σκέπασα με μεταξωτό μανδύα. 11 Σε στόλισα με κοσμήματα: βραχιόλια έβαλα στα μπράτσα σου και περιδέραιο στο λαιμό σου, 12 κρίκο στη μύτη σου, στ’ αυτιά σου σκουλαρίκια και στέμμα ατίμητο πάνω στο κεφάλι σου. 13 Έτσι στολίστηκες με μάλαμα κι ασήμι και ντύθηκες μες στα λινά και μες στα μεταξένια και στα πολύχρωμα υφαντά. Έφαγες πίτα από σιμιγδάλι, μέλι και λάδι. Έγινες πανέμορφη, άξια να βασιλέψεις.*Η Ιερουσαλήμ είχε υπάρξει η κατ’ εξοχήν βασιλική πόλη (βλ. Α΄ Βασ 11:36 και 15:4).14 Η φήμη σου απλώθηκε στα έθνη εξαιτίας της ομορφιάς σου· ήτανε τέλεια, χάρη στη λάμψη που σου χάρισα", λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός».

15 «"Εσύ όμως, εκμεταλλεύτηκες την ομορφιά που σου χάρισα και τη φήμη σου και πήγες κι έγινες πόρνη. Μες στην ακολασία βουτήχτηκες και δόθηκες χωρίς φραγμό στον κάθε τυχαίο διαβάτη. 16 Διάλεξες τα πιο λαμπερόχρωμα φορέματά σου και τ’ άπλωσες στους δικούς σου ιερούς τόπους· τους στόλισες μ’ αυτά κι εκεί απάνω πόρνεψες.*Η ΠΔ συχνά χρησιμοποιεί την εικόνα της πορνείας για να περιγράψει τη λατρεία των ειδώλων (βλ. Εξ 34:15· Ωσ 2:4...) Τέτοια πράγματα δεν θα ’πρεπε να είχαν συμβεί. 17 Πήρες και τα λαμπερά, χρυσά και ασημένια κοσμήματα που σου είχα δώσει και μ’ αυτά έκανες ομοιώματα αντρών και μαζί τους με απάτησες. 18 Πήρες τα πολύχρωμα υφαντά φορέματά σου και σκέπασες αυτά τα είδωλα και πρόσφερες σ’ αυτά το λάδι μου και το θυμίαμά μου. 19 Τους πρόσφερες για ευχάριστη μυρωδιά την τροφή που εγώ σου είχα δώσει, την πίτα την καμωμένη από σιμιγδάλι, λάδι και μέλι, που μ’ αυτά εγώ σε είχα θρέψει. Δυστυχώς, έτσι έγινε", λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός.

20 "Έπειτα πήρες τ’ αγόρια σου και τα κορίτσια σου, εκείνα που ανήκαν σ’ εμένα, και τα πρόσφερες θυσία στα είδωλα για να γίνουν τροφή τους. Σαν να μην έφταναν δηλαδή οι πορνείες σου, 21 έσφαξες τα παιδιά μου και τα παρέδωσες στα είδωλά σου για ολοκαύτωμα.*Η χανανιτική συνήθεια να προσφέρουν τα παιδιά τους ολοκαύτωμα στα είδωλα είχε υιοθετηθεί και από τους Ισραηλίτες (βλ. κεφ. 20:31) κατά παράβαση του νόμου (βλ. Λευ 18:21).22 Και μέσα σ’ όλες αυτές τις βδελυρές πράξεις και τις πορνείες σου, δε θυμήθηκες τον καιρό της νιότης σου, τότε που ήσουν γυμνή κι ασκέπαστη και μες στο αίμα σου βουτηγμένη"».

23 «"Αλίμονο, αλίμονο σ’ εσένα! Εγώ, ο Κύριος ο Θεός, το λέω. Μετά απ’ αυτή σου την ασέβεια, 24 έχτισες και δικό σου θολωτό δωμάτιο, καθιέρωσες και δικούς σου ιερούς τόπους σε κάθε πλατεία. 25 Στην είσοδο του κάθε δρόμου έχτισες και ψηλές εξέδρες όπου πορνευόσουν την ομορφιά σου· εκεί πρόσφερες τον εαυτό σου στους διαβάτες και βυθιζόσουν όλο και περισσότερο στην πορνεία. 26 Πορνεύτηκες με τους γεροδεμένους Αιγύπτιους,*Η συμμαχία με την Αίγυπτο παρομοιάζεται εδώ με πορνεία. Οι προφήτες πάντοτε καταδίκασαν τέτοιες συμμαχίες (βλ. Ησ 30:1· Ωσ 7:11· 12:2). τους γείτονές σου, και γινόσουν όλο και πιο ακόλαστη, για να μ’ εξοργίζεις. 27 Άπλωσα πάνω σου το χέρι μου και σε τιμώρησα, λιγόστεψα τη διατροφή σου και σε παρέδωσα στη διάθεση των εχθρών σου, στων Φιλισταίων τις πόλεις,*Η πολιτική ορισμένων βασιλιάδων του Ιούδα είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την προσάρτηση εδαφών τους στη χώρα των Φιλισταίων (βλ. κεφ. 25:15-17· Β΄ Χρ 28:18). που ντράπηκαν για την αισχρή σου συμπεριφορά.

28 "Πορνεύτηκες επίσης και με τους Ασσυρίους,*Πολλοί βασιλιάδες του Ισραήλ και του Ιούδα είχαν επιδιώξει συμμαχία με την Ασσυρία (βλ. Β΄ Βασ 15-19· 16:7-9· Ωσ 5:13· 8:9). επειδή ήσουν αχόρταγη, και πάλι, αν και πορνεύτηκες μ’ αυτούς, ωστόσο δεν ικανοποιήθηκες. 29 Πορνεύτηκες αναρίθμητες φορές στη χώρα των εμπόρων, τη Βαβυλώνα, αλλά και πάλι δε βρήκες κορεσμό. 30 Πόσο ασυγκράτητη ήσουν!" λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός. "Συμπεριφέρθηκες σαν αδιάντροπη πόρνη! 31 Μα κι όταν έχτιζες τα θολωτά σου δωμάτια στην είσοδο των δρόμων και τις ψηλές σου εξέδρες στις πλατείες, δεν ενεργούσες καν σαν πόρνη, γιατί αδιαφορούσες για την αμοιβή σου. 32 Έμοιαζες με μοιχαλίδα, που προτιμάει τους ξένους απ’ τον άντρα της. 33 Οι πόρνες δέχονται πληρωμή από τους άντρες· αλλά εσύ πλήρωνες για να προσελκύσεις τους εραστές σου να ’ρθουν από παντού να σε βρουν και να πορνέψουν μαζί σου.*Για να επιτύχουν μια συμμαχία οι Ισραηλίτες συχνά έπρεπε να καταβάλουν βαρύτατο φόρο υποτελείας (βλ. Β΄ Βασ 15:19· 16:8).34 Αυτή ήταν η διαφορά σου από τις άλλες πόρνες: Κανένας δε σε ήθελε· έδινες αμοιβή, δεν έπαιρνες· τόσο ήσουν διεφθαρμένη!"»

35 «"Άκου, λοιπόν, πόρνη Ιερουσαλήμ, το λόγο του Κυρίου! 36 Λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός: Επειδή παραδόθηκες γυμνή στους εραστές σου, για να λατρέψεις τα βδελυρά σου είδωλα, προσφέροντας θυσία κι αυτό ακόμα το αίμα των παιδιών σου, 37 γι’ αυτό κι εγώ θα συγκεντρώσω από παντού όλους τους εραστές σου, που ένιωθες μαζί τους ηδονή, όλους όσους αγάπησες και όλους όσους μίσησες, και μπροστά τους θα σε ξεγυμνώσω.*θα σε ξεγυμνώσω. Η γυμνότητα ήταν συμβολισμός καταισχύνης και πλήρους αδυναμίας. Οι σύμμαχοι της Ιερουσαλήμ (οι «εραστές της») θα έσπευδαν να την κυριέψουν όταν θ’ άκουγαν πως είχε ερημωθεί.38 Θα σε τιμωρήσω σαν μοιχαλίδα και σαν φόνισσα. Μ’ οργή και αγανάκτηση θα σε καταδικάσω σε θάνατο. 39 Θα σε παραδώσω στην εξουσία των εραστών σου. Αυτοί θα εξαφανίσουν τα θολωτά δωμάτιά σου και τις ψηλές εξέδρες· θα σου βγάλουν τα ρούχα, θα πάρουν τα λαμπρά κοσμήματά σου, και θα σ’ αφήσουνε γυμνή κι ασκέπαστη.

40 "Έπειτα θα ξεσηκώσουν εναντίον σου τη σύναξη του λαού και θα σε λιθοβολήσουν και θα σε κατασφάξουν με τα ξίφη τους 41 και θα κάψουν τα σπίτια σου. Έτσι, θα εκτελέσουν την καταδικαστική απόφαση εναντίον σου μπροστά στα μάτια πλήθους γυναικών. Θα βάλω τέρμα στις πορνείες σου και δε θα ξαναπληρώσεις πια καμιά αμοιβή. 42 Μ’ αυτό τον τρόπο θα ικανοποιήσω την οργή μου εναντίον σου, κι ύστερα δεν θα ’χω πια λόγο να είμαι αγανακτισμένος. Θα μου περάσει ο θυμός και θα ησυχάσω. 43 Ξέχασες τι ήμουν για σένα τον καιρό της νιότης σου και με εξόργισες με όλα αυτά τά έργα σου και επιπλέον ήσουν και ανήθικη. Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ τώρα θα σε τιμωρήσω γι’ αυτή σου τη συμπεριφορά. Εγώ, ο Κύριος ο Θεός, το λέω"».

44 «"Ιερουσαλήμ, αυτοί που σκαρώνουν γνωμικά θα σε κοροϊδεύουν με τη γνωστή παροιμία: Το μήλο κάτω απ’ τη μηλιά θα πέσει. 45 Πράγματι, είσαι κόρη μιας μάνας που πρόδωσε τον άντρα της και τα παιδιά της· ίδια κι απαράλλαχτη με τις αδερφές σου πόλεις, που πρόδωσαν τους άντρες τους και τα παιδιά τους. Η μάνα σας ήταν πράγματι Χετταία κι ο πατέρας σας Αμορραίος. 46 Η μεγάλη αδερφή σου ήταν η Σαμάρεια, με τα περίχωρά της βόρεια από σένα, και η νεότερη αδερφή σου ήταν τα Σόδομα, με τα περίχωρά της νότια από σένα. 47 Και δεν αρκέστηκες να μιμείσαι τη συμπεριφορά εκείνων, αλλά σε πολύ λίγο χρόνο τις ξεπέρασες σε διαφθορά. 48 Εγώ, ο αληθινός Θεός, το επιβεβαιώνω: Η αδερφή σου, τα Σόδομα, και τα περίχωρά τους δεν έκαναν ό,τι έκανες εσύ και τα περίχωρά σου. 49 Οι πόλεις αυτές αμάρτησαν όταν περηφανεύτηκαν πως είχαν άφθονα πλούτη και ζούσαν με περιττή πολυτέλεια, και δε βοήθησαν τους φτωχούς κι αυτούς που είχαν ανάγκη. 50 Περηφανεύτηκαν κι έκαναν πράξεις βδελυρές. Όταν τα είδα αυτά τις εξαφάνισα. 51 Η Σαμάρεια δεν είχε πράξει ούτε τις μισές απ’ τις δικές σου αμαρτίες· αλλά οι δικές σου πράξεις ήταν πολύ πιο αποκρουστικές, έτσι ώστε μπροστά σου οι αδερφές σου να φαίνονται αθώες. 52 Ο εξευτελισμός λοιπόν για τις ανομίες σου θα είναι όλος δικός σου, αφού μπροστά σ’ αυτές οι αδερφές σου μοιάζουν αθώες"».

53 «"Θα αποκαταστήσω την ευημερία των Σοδόμων και της Σαμάρειας και των γύρω τους πόλεων, μαζί με τη δική σου. 54 Όλα αυτά θα τα κάνω για να ντραπείς για τις πράξεις σου και οι αδερφές σου ν’ ανακουφιστούν. 55 Οι τρεις σας μαζί με τα περίχωρά σας θα ανοικοδομηθείτε και θα ευτυχήσετε και πάλι όπως πριν.

56 "Τον καιρό της περηφάνιας σου κορόιδευες την αδερφή σου, τα Σόδομα. 57 Τώρα όμως όλοι βλέπουν τη δική σου ασέβεια. Έτσι, όλες οι πόλεις της Συρίας με τα περίχωρά τους και οι πόλεις των Φιλισταίων σε κοροϊδεύουν και σε περιφρονούν. 58 Εσύ είσαι ένοχη εξαιτίας της ανηθικότητάς σου και των βδελυρών σου πράξεων. Εγώ, ο Κύριος ο Θεός, το λέω"».

59 Λέει ακόμα ο Κύριος, ο Θεός: «Εσύ, Ιερουσαλήμ, αθέτησες τον όρκο σου, παραβαίνοντας τη διαθήκη μου. Θα σου κάνω, λοιπόν, ό,τι σου αξίζει. 60 Εγώ, όμως, δε θα ξεχάσω τη διαθήκη που έκανα μαζί σου όταν ήσουν νέα και θα κάνω πάλι μ’ εσένα αιώνια διαθήκη. 61 Τότε θα θυμηθείς τις πράξεις σου και θα ντραπείς. Θα ξαναπάρεις τις αδερφές σου, τις μεγαλύτερες και τις μικρότερες· θα σου τις δώσω για θυγατέρες σου, αλλά σαν κάτι πέρα από τη διαθήκη που έκανα μ’ εσένα. 62 Κι όταν θα κάνω μ’ εσένα διαθήκη, θα μάθεις ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος. 63 Τότε θα θυμάσαι τα περασμένα και θα ντρέπεσαι, και δε θα μπορείς πια ν’ αρθρώσεις λέξη από τη ντροπή σου· τότε θα σε συγχωρήσω για όλα όσα έχεις κάνει. Εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, το λέω».

6 And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.*16.6 polluted: or, trodden under foot 7 I have caused thee to multiply as the bud of the field, and thou hast increased and waxen great, and thou art come to excellent ornaments: thy breasts are fashioned, and thine hair is grown, whereas thou wast naked and bare.*16.7 caused…: Heb. made thee a million*16.7 excellent…: Heb. ornament of ornaments 8 Now when I passed by thee, and looked upon thee, behold, thy time was the time of love; and I spread my skirt over thee, and covered thy nakedness: yea, I sware unto thee, and entered into a covenant with thee, saith the Lord GOD, and thou becamest mine. 9 Then washed I thee with water; yea, I throughly washed away thy blood from thee, and I anointed thee with oil.*16.9 blood: Heb. bloods 10 I clothed thee also with broidered work, and shod thee with badgers’ skin, and I girded thee about with fine linen, and I covered thee with silk. 11 I decked thee also with ornaments, and I put bracelets upon thy hands, and a chain on thy neck. 12 And I put a jewel on thy forehead, and earrings in thine ears, and a beautiful crown upon thine head.*16.12 forehead: Heb. nose 13 Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen, and silk, and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour, and honey, and oil: and thou wast exceeding beautiful, and thou didst prosper into a kingdom. 14 And thy renown went forth among the heathen for thy beauty: for it was perfect through my comeliness, which I had put upon thee, saith the Lord GOD.

15 But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was. 16 And of thy garments thou didst take, and deckedst thy high places with divers colours, and playedst the harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so. 17 Thou hast also taken thy fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee, and madest to thyself images of men, and didst commit whoredom with them,*16.17 of men: Heb. of a male 18 And tookest thy broidered garments, and coveredst them: and thou hast set mine oil and mine incense before them. 19 My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey, wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord GOD.*16.19 a sweet…: Heb. a savour of rest 20 Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,*16.20 to be…: Heb. to devour 21 That thou hast slain my children, and delivered them to cause them to pass through the fire for them? 22 And in all thine abominations and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast polluted in thy blood. 23 And it came to pass after all thy wickedness, (woe, woe unto thee! saith the Lord GOD;) 24 That thou hast also built unto thee an eminent place, and hast made thee an high place in every street.*16.24 eminent…: or, brothel house 25 Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms. 26 Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians thy neighbours, great of flesh; and hast increased thy whoredoms, to provoke me to anger. 27 Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine ordinary food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are ashamed of thy lewd way.*16.27 daughters: or, cities 28 Thou hast played the whore also with the Assyrians, because thou wast unsatiable; yea, thou hast played the harlot with them, and yet couldest not be satisfied. 29 Thou hast moreover multiplied thy fornication in the land of Canaan unto Chaldea; and yet thou wast not satisfied herewith. 30 How weak is thine heart, saith the Lord GOD, seeing thou doest all these things, the work of an imperious whorish woman; 31 In that thou buildest thine eminent place in the head of every way, and makest thine high place in every street; and hast not been as an harlot, in that thou scornest hire;*16.31 In that thou buildest…: or, In thy daughters is thine, etc 32 But as a wife that committeth adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband! 33 They give gifts to all whores: but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers, and hirest them, that they may come unto thee on every side for thy whoredom.*16.33 hirest: Heb. bribest 34 And the contrary is in thee from other women in thy whoredoms, whereas none followeth thee to commit whoredoms: and in that thou givest a reward, and no reward is given unto thee, therefore thou art contrary.

35 Wherefore, O harlot, hear the word of the LORD: 36 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them; 37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness. 38 And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy.*16.38 as: Heb. with judgments of 39 And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare.*16.39 thy fair…: Heb. instruments of thine ornament 40 They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords. 41 And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more. 42 So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry. 43 Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations.

44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. 45 Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite. 46 And thine elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at thy left hand: and thy younger sister, that dwelleth at thy right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.*16.46 thy younger: Heb. lesser than thou 47 Yet hast thou not walked after their ways, nor done after their abominations: but, as if that were a very little thing, thou wast corrupted more than they in all thy ways.*16.47 as if…: or, that was lothed as a small thing 48 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, Sodom thy sister hath not done, she nor her daughters, as thou hast done, thou and thy daughters. 49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good. 51 Neither hath Samaria committed half of thy sins; but thou hast multiplied thine abominations more than they, and hast justified thy sisters in all thine abominations which thou hast done. 52 Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou: yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters. 53 When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them: 54 That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them. 55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate. 56 For thy sister Sodom was not mentioned by thy mouth in the day of thy pride,*16.56 mentioned: Heb. for a report, or, hearing*16.56 pride: Heb. prides, or, excellencies 57 Before thy wickedness was discovered, as at the time of thy reproach of the daughters of Syria, and all that are round about her, the daughters of the Philistines, which despise thee round about.*16.57 Syria: Heb. Aram*16.57 despise: or, spoil 58 Thou hast borne thy lewdness and thine abominations, saith the LORD.*16.58 borne: Heb. borne them 59 For thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, which hast despised the oath in breaking the covenant.

60 Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. 61 Then thou shalt remember thy ways, and be ashamed, when thou shalt receive thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger: and I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by thy covenant. 62 And I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: 63 That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and never open thy mouth any more because of thy shame, when I am pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord GOD.
