1 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: 2 «Εσύ άνθρωπε,*Εσύ άνθρωπε. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 2:1. άκου τι εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, έχω να πω στους κατοίκους της χώρας του Ισραήλ: "ήρθε το τέλος! Το τέλος για όλη τη χώρα έφτασε! 3 Θα εξαπολύσω το θυμό μου εναντίον σας και θα ’ρθεί και για σας το τέλος. Θα σας κρίνω ανάλογα με τα έργα σας και θα σας τιμωρήσω για όλες τις βδελυρές σας πράξεις. 4 Δε θα δείξω έλεος για σας, δε θα σας γλιτώσω· θα σας ζητήσω να πληρώσετε για όλες τις φρικτές σας πράξεις που ως τώρα εξακολουθείτε να κάνετε. Τότε θα μάθετε ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος"».

5 Λέει ο Κύριος ο Θεός: «Να! Η καταστροφή έρχεται. Και θα είναι ολοκληρωτική. 6 Το τέλος έρχεται· έρχεται το τέλος. Το τέλος σας φτάνει, πλησιάζει! 7 Τώρα είναι η σειρά σας, κάτοικοι της χώρας. Ήρθε ο καιρός, η μέρα πλησιάζει, μέρα πανικού! Φωνές χαράς απ’ τις ειδωλολατρικές σας τελετές δεν θ’ ακούγονται πια στα βουνά. 8 Σύντομα τώρα την οργή μου θα την αδειάσω πάνω σας και θα εξαντλήσω εναντίον σας το θυμό μου· θα σας κρίνω ανάλογα με τα έργα σας· και θα σας τιμωρήσω για όλες τις βδελυρές σας πράξεις. 9 Δε θα σας δείξω επιείκεια ούτε θα σας σπλαχνιστώ· θα σας ζητήσω να πληρώσετε για τα έργα σας και για όλες τις βδελυρές σας πράξεις. Έτσι θα μάθετε ότι εγώ που σας κτυπώ, είμαι ο Κύριος».

10 Νάτην η ημέρα της κρίσεως, έρχεται· η καταδίκη καταφθάνει, το μαστίγιο ετοιμάστηκε. Η περηφάνεια φούντωσε. 11 η βία δημιουργεί όλο και περισσότερη διαφθορά. Τίποτα δεν πρόκειται να μείνει από την αφθονία σας και τον πλούτο σας· και δε θα γίνουν διακρίσεις ανάμεσά σας.*Οι στ. 10-11 στο εβρ. είναι ασαφείς και η μετ. αβέβαιη.

12 Ο καιρός ήρθε, η ημέρα της κρίσεως πλησιάζει. Ας μη χαίρεται ο αγοραστής κι ας μη λυπάται αυτός που πρέπει να πουλήσει ακίνητη περιουσία, γιατί η καταστροφή επέρχεται εναντίον όλων. 13 Ο πωλητής έστω κι αν επιζήσει, δεν πρόκειται να πάρει πίσω αυτό που πούλησε,*Αναφορά στο Ιωβηλαίο έτος (βλ. Λευ 25:10-13). γιατί το προφητικό όραμα που απειλεί όλο το λαό δεν πρόκειται ν’ ανακληθεί. Όλοι τους θα υποστούν τις συνέπειες της αδικίας τους· κανείς τους δεν θα μπορέσει να σωθεί.

14 Ήχησε η σάλπιγγα· όλα είν’ έτοιμα, αλλά κανείς δεν πάει στη μάχη, γιατί η οργή του Κυρίου έρχεται πιο γρήγορα πάνω σ’ όλο το λαό. 15 Ο πόλεμος θερίζει έξω στους δρόμους, μέσα στα σπίτια η πείνα και το θανατικό. Όποιος είναι στον κάμπο θα σκοτωθεί στη μάχη κι όποιος είναι στην πόλη θα υποκύψει απ’ την πείνα και τις αρρώστιες. 16 Αν μερικοί διαφύγουν κι επιζήσουν, θα καταφύγουν στα βουνά, όπως τα τρομαγμένα περιστέρια της πεδιάδας και θα στενάζουν για τις ανομίες τους.

17 Τα χέρια τους θα παραλύσουν, τα γόνατά τους θ’ αλληλοχτυπιούνται καθώς θα τρέμουν. 18 Όλοι τους θα ντυθούν στα πένθιμα και φρίκη θα τους διακατέχει. Η ντροπή θα είναι ζωγραφισμένη στα πρόσωπα όλων και θα ’χουν ξυρισμένα τα κεφάλια τους σε ένδειξη πένθους. 19 Θα πετάξουν το ασήμι τους στους δρόμους και γι’ αυτούς το χρυσάφι τους θα είναι σκουπίδια. Γιατί το ασήμι τους και το χρυσάφι τους δεν θα μπορούν να τους σώσουν την ημέρα της οργής του Κυρίου· δε θα μπορούν μ’ εκείνα να γεμίσουν το στομάχι τους ή να ικανοποιήσουν την ψυχή τους. Αυτά ήταν άλλωστε και η αιτία που αμάρτησαν: 20 Ήταν περήφανοι για τα όμορφα στολίδια τους και μ’ αυτά έφτιαξαν τα βδελυρά είδωλά τους, τα αποτρόπαια αντικείμενα της λατρείας τους. Γι’ αυτό κι ο Κύριος θα τους κάνει να βλέπουν με απέχθεια τον πλούτο τους.

21 «Στους ξένους θα τον παραδώσω όλον αυτό τον πλούτο», λέει ο Κύριος, «και στους εχθρούς για λάφυρα, για να τον βεβηλώσουν. 22 Θα εγκαταλείψω το λαό μου και οι εχθροί τ’ άδυτα του ναού μου θα μολύνουν. Ληστές θα εισχωρήσουν μέχρι εκεί και θα τον βεβηλώσουν. 23 Θα κάνουν μεγάλη σφαγή,*μεγάλη σφαγή, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. κατά λέξη έχει: «κάνω δεσμά». γιατί η χώρα είναι γεμάτη αιματοχυσίες και στην πόλη βασιλεύει η βία. 24 Γι’ αυτό θα φέρω τα σκληρότερα από τα έθνη και θα καταλάβουν τα σπίτια τους· θα συντρίψω την υπεροπτική τους δύναμη και θα βεβηλωθούν τα ιερά τους.

25 »Θα πανικοβληθούν και θα προσπαθήσουν να γλιτώσουν, αλλά μάταια. 26 Θα έρχονται αλλεπάλληλες οι καταστροφές και οι κακές ειδήσεις. Θα ζητήσουν μήνυμα του Θεού απ’ τον προφήτη, αλλά μάταια· ο ιερέας δεν θα μπορεί πια να τους διδάξει ούτε οι πρεσβύτεροι να τους δώσουν συμβουλές. 27 Ο βασιλιάς θα θρηνήσει, οι άρχοντες θα ντυθούν στα πένθιμα κι ο υπόλοιπος λαός θα έχει παραλύσει από τον τρόμο, γιατί θα τους μεταχειριστώ ανάλογα με τα έργα τους και θα τους κρίνω όπως κι εκείνοι κρίνουν. Έτσι θα μάθουν ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος».

23 Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence. 24 Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be defiled.*7.24 their holy…: or, they shall inherit their holy places 25 Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.*7.25 Destruction: Heb.
