1-3 Την πέμπτη μέρα του τέταρτου μήνα του τριακοστού έτους της ηλικίας μου, εγώ ο Ιεζεκιήλ, γιος του ιερέα Βουζί, βρισκόμουν ανάμεσα στους αιχμαλώτους, κοντά στον ποταμό Χεβάρ. Εκείνη την ημέρα ανοίχτηκαν οι ουρανοί και είδα οράματα που μου τα φανέρωσε ο Θεός. Αυτό συνέβη τον πέμπτο χρόνο μετά που είχε αιχμαλωτιστεί ο βασιλιάς Ιωαχίν.*Την πέμπτη... της ηλικίας μου. Το εβρ. έχει απλώς «του τριακοστού έτους». Ελλείψει πάσης άλλης ενδείξεως θεωρείται πιθανό να γίνεται εδώ νύξη για την ηλικία του Ιεζεκιήλ. – Χεβάρ Πιθανώς πρόκειται για παραπόταμο του μεγάλου ποταμού Ευφράτη που περνούσε από τη Βαβυλώνα. – τον πέμπτο χρόνο... Δηλ. τα έτη 593-592 π.Χ. (Βλ. Β΄ Βασ 24:8-17· Β΄ Χρ 36:9-10).

Εκεί, στη Βαβυλώνα, στον ποταμό Χεβάρ, ο Κύριος μου μίλησε για πρώτη φορά και ένιωσα τη δύναμή του πάνω μου. 4 Καθώς παρατηρούσα, είδα να ’ρχεται από το βορρά μια ανεμοθύελλα, που έφερνε ένα μεγάλο σύννεφο. Το σύννεφο έβγαζε από μέσα του φωτιά και έλαμπε ολόγυρα, ενώ στο κέντρο του κάτι ακτινοβολούσε σαν το μέταλλο που βγαίνει από τη φωτιά. 5 Μέσα από τη φωτιά διέκρινα τέσσερα όντα που έμοιαζαν με άνθρωπο. 6 Το καθένα τους είχε τέσσερα πρόσωπα και τέσσερα φτερά. 7 Τα πόδια τους ήταν ίσια, ενώ τα πέλματά τους έμοιαζαν με του μοσχαριού και σπινθηροβολούσαν σαν γυαλιστερός χαλκός. 8 Εκτός από τα τέσσερα πρόσωπα και τα τέσσερα φτερά, καθένα από τα όντα αυτά είχε τέσσερα ανθρώπινα χέρια, ένα χέρι κάτω από κάθε φτερό. 9 Τα ανοιγμένα φτερά τους συναντούσαν το ένα το άλλο στις άκρες καθώς κινούνταν· δεν άλλαζαν κατεύθυνση· βάδιζαν κατευθείαν μπροστά, εκεί που κοίταζε το κάθε πρόσωπο. 10 Όσο για την όψη του προσώπου τους, το κάθε ον είχε από μπροστά τη μορφή ανθρώπου, δεξιά τη μορφή λιονταριού, αριστερά τη μορφή βοδιού και πίσω τη μορφή αετού. 11 Αυτά ήταν τα πρόσωπά τους. Τα δύο από τα φτερά του καθενός ήταν ανοιγμένα προς τα πάνω και άγγιζαν τα φτερά του άλλου, ενώ τα άλλα δύο φτερά σκέπαζαν το σώμα τους. 12 Το κάθε ον βάδιζε κατευθείαν μπροστά, εκεί που κοίταζε το κάθε πρόσωπό του, όπου τα πήγαινε το Πνεύμα. Βάδιζαν χωρίς να γυρίζουν τα σώματά τους. 13 Ανάμεσά τους διακρινόταν μια λάμψη σαν από αναμμένα κάρβουνα, σαν λάμψη από δαδιά που πηγαινοέρχονταν. Η φωτιά ήταν εκτυφλωτική κι από μέσα της πετιούνταν αστραπές. 14 Τα όντα πηγαινοέρχονταν κι έτρεχαν σαν αστραπή.

15 Καθώς παρατηρούσα τα όντα, είδα ότι πάνω στο έδαφος υπήρχε ένας τροχός κοντά τους, ένας τροχός για κάθε ον με τις τέσσερις μορφές. 16 Οι τέσσερις τροχοί είχαν το χρώμα του τοπαζιού. Όλοι τους είχαν το ίδιο σχήμα και ήταν έτσι κατασκευασμένοι, ώστε ο ένας τροχός φαινόταν να έχει έναν δεύτερο τροχό μέσα του σταυρωτά. 17 Έτσι οι τροχοί είχαν τη δυνατότητα να κινούνται σταθερά και προς τις τέσσερις κατευθύνσεις. 18 Οι τροχοί ήταν πολύ μεγάλοι· έφταναν σε τρομαχτικό ύψος και η περιφέρειά τους ήταν γεμάτη μάτια σπινθηροβόλα. 19 Όταν τα όντα προχωρούσαν, προχωρούσαν μαζί τους κι οι τροχοί· κι όταν σηκώνονταν τα όντα από τη γη, σηκώνονταν κι εκείνοι. 20,21 Όπου το Πνεύμα πήγαινε τα όντα, μετατοπίζονταν μαζί τους κι οι τροχοί. Όταν αυτά βαδίζανε μετακινούνταν και οι τροχοί· όταν αυτά σταματούσαν, σταματούσαν κι εκείνοι· κι όταν αυτά υψώνονταν από τη γη, υψώνονταν μαζί μ’ αυτά και οι τροχοί· γιατί το ίδιο Πνεύμα κατεύθυνε τα όντα και τους τροχούς.

22 Πάνω από τα κεφάλια των όντων είδα κάτι που έμοιαζε με κρυστάλλινο, λαμπερό θόλο. 23 Κάτω απ’ το θόλο στέκονταν τα όντα με απλωμένα τα φτερά τους· καθένα άπλωνε δύο φτερά και άγγιζε τα φτερά του άλλου όντος, ενώ με τα άλλα δύο φτερά σκέπαζε το σώμα του. 24 Όταν προχωρούσαν, άκουγα τον ήχο των φτερών τους: ήταν σαν μια μεγάλη θάλασσα που βρυχιέται, σαν τη φωνή του Παντοδύναμου· ήταν ένας ορυμαγδός σαν βουή από πολεμικό στρατόπεδο. Όταν στέκονταν, δίπλωναν τα φτερά τους. 25 Αλλά και τότε ακουγόταν ακόμα ένας ήχος που ερχόταν από το θόλο, πάνω απ’ τα κεφάλια τους.

26 Κι εκεί, πάνω από το θόλο, υπήρχε κάτι που έμοιαζε με τεράστιο ζαφείρι σε σχήμα θρόνου. Και πάνω στο θρόνο είδα να κάθεται κάποιος που έμοιαζε με άνθρωπο. 27 Έπειτα είδα, από τη μέση του και πάνω κάτι που έλαμπε σαν χρυσάφι κι από τη μέση του και κάτω είδα κάτι σαν φωτιά, που ολόγυρά του έβγαζε λάμψη. 28 Έμοιαζε με το ουράνιο τόξο που εμφανίζεται στα σύννεφα μετά τη βροχή· τέτοια ήταν η λάμψη αυτή, σαν το απαύγασμα της δόξας του Κυρίου.

Όταν είδα τη λάμψη, έπεσα με το πρόσωπο στη γη· και τότε άκουσα τη φωνή κάποιου που μιλούσε.

4 And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.*1.4 infolding…: Heb. catching itself 5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. 6 And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. 7 And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.*1.7 straight…: Heb. a straight foot 8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings. 9 Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. 11 Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.*1.11 stretched…: or, divided above 12 And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; and they turned not when they went. 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. 14 And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.

15 Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces. 16 The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. 17 When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went. 18 As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.*1.18 and their rings: or, and their strakes 19 And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up. 20 Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.*1.20 of…: or, of life 21 When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.*1.21 of…: or, of life 22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above. 23 And under the firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side, and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies. 24 And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings. 25 And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads, when they stood, and had let down their wings.

26 And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it. 27 And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about. 28 As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
