1 Ένιωσα πάνω μου τη δύναμη του Κυρίου. Μ’ έβγαλε με το Πνεύμα του έξω, μ’ έφερε σε μια πεδιάδα που ήταν γεμάτη κόκαλα 2 και με περιέφερε πάνω απ’ αυτά. Τα κόκαλα ήταν πάρα πολλά και πολύ ξερά, απλωμένα στην πεδιάδα.

3 «Άνθρωπε»,*Άνθρωπε. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 2:1. με ρώτησε, «μπορούν να γίνουν ζωντανοί άνθρωποι αυτά τα κόκαλα;» Κι εγώ απάντησα: «Κύριε, Θεέ, εσύ ξέρεις». 4 Τότε μου είπε: «Μίλα εκ μέρους μου σ’ αυτά τα κόκαλα και πες τους: "κόκαλα εσείς ξερά, 5 ο Κύριος ο Θεός σάς λέει: Προσέξτε! Εγώ θα φέρω πνοή μέσα σας και θα πάρετε ζωή. 6 Θα σας δώσω νεύρα και θα κάνω να ’ρθει πάνω σας σάρκα και θα τη σκεπάσω με δέρμα· μετά θα σας δώσω πνοή και θα πάρετε ζωή. Τότε θα μάθετε ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος"».

7 Προφήτεψα, λοιπόν, κατά πώς διατάχθηκα. Κι εκεί που προφήτευα, έγινε ένας θόρυβος κι ακούγονταν τριξίματα· τα κόκαλα πλησίαζαν το ένα το άλλο. 8 Ύστερα κοίταξα και είδα ότι νεύρα και σάρκες φύτρωναν πάνω στα κόκαλα και μετά ντύθηκαν με δέρμα· ζωή όμως δεν υπήρχε ακόμα μέσα τους.

9 Τότε μου είπε ο Κύριος: «Μίλα εκ μέρους μου στην πνοή της ζωής! Προφήτεψε, άνθρωπε, και πες της: "ο Κύριος ο Θεός λέει: Έλα, πνοή, από τις τέσσερις άκρες και μπες μέσα σ’ αυτά τα πτώματα για να ξαναπάρουν ζωή"». 10 Προφήτεψα, λοιπόν, όπως με πρόσταξε ο Κύριος. Μπήκε τότε η πνοή της ζωής στα πτώματα και αναστήθηκαν και στάθηκαν στα πόδια τους, κι ήταν ένα πάρα πολύ μεγάλο στράτευμα.

11 «Άνθρωπε», μου είπε ο Κύριος, «αυτά τα κόκαλα συμβολίζουν τους Ισραηλίτες, οι οποίοι λένε συνεχώς ότι είναι σαν ξερά κόκαλα, ότι χάθηκε κάθε ελπίδα γι αυτούς, ότι είναι χαμένοι πια. 12 Γι’ αυτό, προφήτεψε και πες τους ότι εγώ, ο Κύριος ο Θεός, λέω: "θ’ ανοίξω τους τάφους σας και θα σας βγάλω μες απ’ αυτούς, λαέ μου, και θα σας φέρω στη χώρα του Ισραήλ. 13 Κι όταν το κάνω αυτό θα μάθετε ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος. 14 Θα σας δώσω το Πνεύμα μου και θα ξαναβρείτε τη ζωή. Θα σας φέρω στη χώρα σας και θα μάθετε ότι εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος. Το είπα και θα το κάνω εγώ, ο Κύριος».

15 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: 16 «Εσύ, άνθρωπε, πάρε ένα ραβδί και γράψε πάνω του τη φράση "βασίλειο του Ιούδα και οι Ισραηλίτες που ζουν σ’ αυτό". Μετά πάρε άλλο ραβδί και γράψε πάνω του τη φράση: "Ιωσήφ,*Ιωσήφ. Πατέρας του Εφραΐμ (Γεν 41:50-52), αποτελεί προσωποποίηση του βορείου βασιλείου, που εξαφανίστηκε μετά την άλωση της Σαμάρειας και τον εκτοπισμό των κατοίκων της το 721 π.Χ. το ραβδί του Εφραΐμ και οι Ισραηλίτες που ζουν σ’ αυτό". 17 Έπειτα ένωσε τα δυο ραβδιά ώστε να σχηματίσουν ένα, και κράτα τα στο χέρι σου.

18 »Κι όταν οι συμπατριώτες σου σε ρωτήσουν τι σημαίνει αυτό, 19 πες τους: "ο Κύριος ο Θεός λέει: Θα πάρω το ραβδί του Ιωσήφ, που είναι στην κατοχή του Εφραΐμ και των Ισραηλιτών που ζουν εκεί, και θα το ενώσω με το ραβδί του Ιούδα· θα τα κάνω ένα ραβδί και θα τα κρατάω στο χέρι μου".

20 »Κι ενώ θα κρατάς μπροστά τους τα ραβδιά με χαραγμένες τις επιγραφές πάνω τους, 21 θα τους πεις: "ο Κύριος ο Θεός λέει: Θα πάρω τους Ισραηλίτες από τα έθνη όπου έχουν πάει, θα τους συγκεντρώσω από παντού και θα τους φέρω στη χώρα τους. 22 Θα τους κάνω όλους ένα έθνος στη χώρα, στα βουνά του Ισραήλ. Ένας βασιλιάς θα τους κυβερνάει όλους· δε θα είναι πια δύο έθνη, δε θα είναι χωρισμένοι σε δύο βασίλεια. 23 Δε θα μολύνονται πια με τη λατρεία των ειδώλων τους, με τις βδελυρές πράξεις τους και με τις παρανομίες τους. Θα τους απαλλάξω από κάθε μορφή απιστίας,*από... απιστίας. Σύμφωνα με πολλά χειρ. και αρχαίες μετ. Το εβρ. έχει «από τις κατοικίες τους». με τις οποίες αμάρτησαν εναντίον μου· θα τους εξαγνίσω κι έτσι θα είναι λαός μου κι εγώ θα είμαι Θεός τους. 24 Ένας μόνο ποιμένας θα υπάρχει για όλους κι αυτός θα είναι ένας βασιλιάς σαν το Δαβίδ, το δούλο μου. Θ’ ακολουθούν τις εντολές μου και θα τηρούν με προσοχή τους νόμους μου.

25 "Θα κατοικούν στη χώρα που έδωσα στο δούλο μου τον Ιακώβ, στη χώρα που κατοίκησαν οι πρόγονοί τους. Θα εγκατασταθούν εκεί με τα παιδιά τους και τα εγγόνια τους για πάντα· κι ο άρχοντάς τους θα είναι παντοτινός, σαν το Δαβίδ, το δούλο μου. 26 Θα κάνω μ’ αυτούς αιώνια διαθήκη ειρήνης· θα τους δώσω μόνιμη εγκατάσταση και θα αυξήσω τον πληθυσμό τους· θα τοποθετήσω το αγιαστήριό μου ανάμεσά τους παντοτινά. 27 Θα κατοικήσω μαζί τους· θα είμαι ο Θεός τους κι αυτοί θα είναι λαός μου. 28 Κι όταν το αγιαστήριό μου θα εγκατασταθεί ανάμεσά τους για πάντα, τότε θα μάθουν τα άλλα έθνη ότι εγώ, ο Κύριος, έχω ξεχωρίσει τους Ισραηλίτες σαν άγιο λαό μου"».

1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, 2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.*37.2 valley: or, champaign 3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. 4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. 5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: 6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone. 8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them. 9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.*37.9 wind: or, breath 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.

11 Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts. 12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves, 14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD.

15 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, 16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: 17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.

18 And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these? 19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.

20 And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes. 21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: 22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all: 23 Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God. 24 And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. 25 And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children’s children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever. 26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. 27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 28 And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
