1 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: 2 «Τι εννοείτε Ισραηλίτες με την παροιμία που λέτε στη χώρα σας: "οι γονείς έφαγαν άγουρα σταφύλια και τα δόντια των παιδιών μούδιασαν"; 3 Εγώ, ο αληθινός Θεός, βεβαιώνω ότι αυτή η παροιμία δεν θα είν’ ανάγκη να χρησιμοποιείται πια στη χώρα σας. 4 Κάθε ζωή σε μένα ανήκει. Τόσο η ζωή του πατέρα όσο και η ζωή του γιου δική μου είναι. Ο άνθρωπος που αμαρτάνει, ο ίδιος και θα πεθάνει.

5 »Ας υποτεθεί ότι ένας άνθρωπος είναι δίκαιος και πράττει το σωστό και το δίκαιο. 6 Δεν λατρεύει τα είδωλα των Ισραηλιτών στα βουνά, δεν τρώει απαγορευμένα σφαχτά, δεν μοιχεύει με τη γυναίκα του άλλου ούτε πλαγιάζει με τη γυναίκα του στην περίοδο που αυτή είναι ακάθαρτη. 7 Δεν καταπιέζει άνθρωπο, αλλά δίνει πίσω το ενέχυρο στον οφειλέτη· μοιράζεται το ψωμί του μ’ εκείνον που πεινάει και δίνει ρούχα στον γυμνό να σκεπαστεί. 8 Δεν δανείζει τοκογλυφικά, δεν παίρνει καν τόκο· δεν κάνει αδικίες, αλλά κρίνει δίκαια τις διαφορές των άλλων. 9 Με λίγα λόγια εφαρμόζει τους νόμους μου και τηρεί τις εντολές μου. Εγώ, λοιπόν, ο Κύριος ο Θεός, βεβαιώνω πως ο άνθρωπος αυτός είναι πραγματικά δίκαιος και θα ζήσει.

10 »Ας υποτεθεί τώρα ότι αυτός ο άνθρωπος έχει έναν γιο που σφάζει και καταστρέφει, και γενικά κάνει 11 τ’ αντίθετα απ’ ό,τι κάνει ο πατέρας του. Τρώει, δηλαδή, το σφαχτό με το αίμα του, μοιχεύει με τη γυναίκα του άλλου, 12 καταπιέζει τον φτωχό κι εκείνον που έχει ανάγκη, διαπράττει ληστείες, δε δίνει πίσω το ενέχυρο και λατρεύει τα βδελυρά είδωλα. 13 Δανείζει τοκογλυφικά και ζητάει τόκο. Αυτός ο γιος δεν θα ζήσει. Θα τιμωρηθεί και εξάπαντος θα πεθάνει, γιατί έκανε όλες αυτές τις βδελυρές πράξεις.

14 »Ας υποθέσουμε, όμως, ότι αυτός ο κακός γιος έχει ένα γιο, που βλέπει τις αμαρτίες του πατέρα του, αλλά ο ίδιος φοβάται και δεν κάνει τα ίδια. 15 Δηλαδή δεν λατρεύει τα είδωλα των Ισραηλιτών ούτε τρώει απαγορευμένα σφαχτά, δεν μοιχεύει με τη γυναίκα του άλλου, 16 δεν καταπιέζει άνθρωπο, δεν κατακρατεί το ενέχυρο, δεν ληστεύει, μοιράζεται το ψωμί του με τον πεινασμένο και δίνει ρούχα στον γυμνό να ντυθεί. 17 Δεν αδικεί τον φτωχό ούτε παίρνει τόκο. Με λίγα λόγια, εφαρμόζει τις εντολές μου και τηρεί τους νόμους μου. Αυτός ο άνθρωπος είναι βέβαιο πως δεν θα πεθάνει κι ας έπραξε ανομίες ο πατέρας του· θα ζήσει. 18 Ο πατέρας του, όμως, επειδή καταπίεσε, λήστεψε τους συνανθρώπους του και γενικά έκανε πράγματα ανεπίτρεπτα για το λαό μου, εκείνος το δίχως άλλο θα πεθάνει εξαιτίας της αδικίας του».

19 «Εσείς όμως αναρωτιέστε: "γιατί να μην υποφέρει ο γιος εξαιτίας της ανομίας του πατέρα του;" Η απάντηση είναι ότι, ο γιος κάνει το σωστό και το δίκαιο και τηρεί με προσοχή όλους τους νόμους μου· γι’ αυτό θα ζήσει, οπωσδήποτε. 20 Ο άνθρωπος όμως που κάνει το κακό θα πεθάνει· ο γιος δεν θα υποφέρει εξαιτίας της ανομίας του πατέρα του ούτε ο πατέρας θα υποφέρει εξαιτίας της ανομίας του παιδιού του. Η δικαιοσύνη του δικαίου θα αναγνωρίζεται στον ίδιο και η ασέβεια του ασεβή θα καταλογίζεται σε βάρος του ίδιου.

21 »Αν όμως ένας ασεβής πάψει να αμαρτάνει και εφαρμόσει τους νόμους μου και καθετί που είναι σωστό και δίκαιο, τότε οπωσδήποτε θα ζήσει, δε θα πεθάνει. 22 Καμιά από τις προηγούμενες παραβάσεις του δε θα του καταλογιστεί· θα ζήσει λόγω των δικαίων πράξεών του. 23 Δεν χαίρομαι όταν ένας άνθρωπος πεθαίνει εξαιτίας της αμαρτίας του», λέει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός. «Προτιμώ να μετανοήσει και να ζήσει.

24 »Αντίθετα, αν ένας δίκαιος ξεφύγει από τον ίσιο δρόμο και πράξει την αδικία, όλες τις βδελυρές πράξεις που κάνει ένας ασεβής, τότε καμία από τις δίκαιες πράξεις του δεν θα του λογαριαστεί. Αυτός θα πεθάνει για την αμαρτία που διέπραξε».

25 «Εσείς όμως, Ισραηλίτες, λέτε: "δεν είναι σωστός ο τρόπος που ενεργεί ο Κύριος". Ακούστε, λοιπόν, τώρα: Ο δικός μου τρόπος δεν είναι ο σωστός ή οι δικές σας ενέργειες είναι διεστραμμένες; 26 Όπως το ’χω ξαναπεί, αν ένας δίκαιος ξεφύγει από τον ίσιο δρόμο και πράξει την αδικία, θα πεθάνει εξαιτίας της ανομίας του. 27 Κι αν ένας ασεβής απαρνηθεί την ασέβειά του και κάνει το σωστό και το δίκαιο, αυτός αξίζει να ζήσει. 28 Αν συναισθανθεί τις παραβάσεις του και μετανοήσει θα ζήσει οπωσδήποτε· δε θα πεθάνει. 29 Κι όμως, εσείς Ισραηλίτες λέτε: "ο τρόπος που ενεργεί ο Κύριος δεν είναι ο σωστός". Αχ, Ισραηλίτες, ο δικός μου τρόπος δεν είναι ο σωστός ή οι δικές σας ενέργειες είναι διεστραμμένες; 30 Γι’ αυτό θα σας κρίνω, Ισραηλίτες, τον καθέναν από σας με τον τρόπο που ενεργείτε· εγώ, ο Κύριος ο Θεός, το λέω.

»Μετανοήστε και σταματήστε τις παραβάσεις σας, για να μη σας οδηγήσει στην καταστροφή η ανομία σας. 31 Σταματήστε τις παραβάσεις σας εναντίον μου κι ανανεώστε την καρδιά σας και το φρόνημά σας. Γιατί θέλετε να πεθάνετε, Ισραηλίτες; 32 Ξέρετε ότι εγώ δε χαίρομαι όταν ένας άνθρωπος πρέπει να πεθάνει. Αυτό το λέω εγώ, ο Κύριος ο Θεός. Μετανοήστε, λοιπόν, για να ζήσετε!»

1 The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying, 2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? 3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,*18.5 that…: Heb. judgment and justice 6 And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman, 7 And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, 9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.

10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,*18.10 robber: or, breaker up of an house*18.10 that doeth…: or, that doeth to his brother besides any of these 11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife, 12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, 13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.*18.13 blood: Heb. bloods

14 Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like, 15 That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife, 16 Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,*18.16 hath not…: Heb. hath not pledged the pledge, or, taken to pledge 17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18 As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19 Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. 20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. 23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? 26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. 27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.*18.30 yourselves: or, others

31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.*18.32 yourselves: or, others
