1 Ο Κύριος μου είπε: «Εσύ, άνθρωπε, πάρε ένα κοφτερό ξίφος και ξύρισε το κεφάλι σου και τα γένια σου·*Συνήθως ξύριζαν τους αιχμαλώτους πολέμου (βλ. Ησ 3:17). Η προφητική αυτή πράξη δείχνει πως οι κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ θα οδηγούνταν στην αιχμαλωσία. πάρε μετά μια ζυγαριά και χώρισε σε τρία μέρη αυτά που θα έχεις κόψει. 2 Το ένα τρίτο θα το κάψεις στη φωτιά στο μέσο της πόλης, που έχεις σχεδιάσει στο κεραμίδι, όταν τελειώσουν οι μέρες της πολιορκίας· το άλλο τρίτο θα το πάρεις και θα το κάνεις κομματάκια με το ξίφος τριγύρω στην πόλη· και το τελευταίο τρίτο θα το σκορπίσεις στον αέρα κι εγώ θα το καταδιώξω με το ξίφος μου. 3 Θα κρατήσεις ωστόσο λίγα απ’ αυτά και θα τα δέσεις στο κάτω άκρο της φορεσιάς σου και θα τα φυλάξεις εκεί. 4 Κι απ’ αυτά θα πάρεις λίγα και θα τα ρίξεις στη φωτιά και θα τα κάψεις. Από ’κει η φωτιά θ’ απλωθεί σ’ ολόκληρη τη χώρα των Ισραηλιτών.

5 »Εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, δηλώνω ότι έτσι θα καταντήσει η Ιερουσαλήμ, που εγώ την είχα κάνει το κέντρο όλων των εθνών. 6 Αυτή όμως παραβίασε τους νόμους μου και τα προστάγματά μου και αποδείχτηκε πιο ασεβής και πιο ανυπάκουη από τα έθνη που την περιβάλλουν. Πράγματι, απέρριψε τους νόμους μου κι αρνήθηκε να ζήσει σύμφωνα με τα προστάγματά μου. 7 Λέω λοιπόν στους Ισραηλίτες: Επειδή εσείς ξεπεράσατε σε ανταρσία τα έθνη που σας περιβάλλουν και δεν ακολουθήσατε τους νόμους μου ούτε εφαρμόσατε τα προστάγματά μου, ούτε καν ακολουθήσατε τους νόμους των γύρω σας εθνών, 8 γι’ αυτό, ακόμα κι εγώ είμαι εναντίον σας, κάτοικοι της Ιερουσαλήμ! Θα εκτελέσω τις αποφάσεις μου μέσα στην πόλη σας, μπροστά στα άλλα έθνη. 9 Για τις βδελυρές πράξεις σας θα σας κάνω ό,τι ποτέ δεν έχω κάνει μέχρι τώρα κι ούτε πρόκειται να ξανακάνω στο μέλλον. 10 Τελικά, για όλα αυτά μέσα στην πόλη σας θα φάνε οι πατεράδες τα παιδιά τους και τα παιδιά θα φάνε τους πατεράδες τους. Θα εκτελέσω τις αποφάσεις μου εναντίον σας· και τους υπόλοιπους από σας, όσοι επιζήσουν, θα τους σκορπίσω στους τέσσερις ανέμους. 11 Κι επειδή μολύνατε το αγιαστήριό μου με τις μιαρές πράξεις σας και τις βδελυγμίες σας, γι’ αυτό, εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, ορκίζομαι πως όσο βέβαιο είναι ότι εγώ ζω, άλλο τόσο είναι βέβαιο ότι δε θα σας σπλαχνιστώ. Θα σας εξοντώσω δίχως να σας λυπηθώ. 12 Το ένα τρίτο από σας θα πεθάνει από λοιμό ή θα λιώσει απ’ την πείνα μέσα στην πόλη· το άλλο τρίτο θα θανατωθεί με ξίφος γύρω στην πόλη· και το τελευταίο τρίτο θα το διασκορπίσω σ’ όλους τους ανέμους και θα τους καταδιώξω με το ξίφος μου.

13 »Έτσι ο θυμός μου θα ξεχυθεί πάνω σας, θα ξεθυμάνει η οργή μου εναντίον σας, ώσπου να ικανοποιηθώ πλήρως. Τότε, απ’ τη βιαιότητα του θυμού μου θα καταλάβετε πόσο προκαλέσατε την αγανάκτησή μου. 14,15 Κοντά σ’ όλα αυτά, θα σε ερημώσω, Ιερουσαλήμ. Τα γύρω σου έθνη και οι περαστικοί θα σε εμπαίζουν, θα σε περιγελούν και θα σε χλευάζουν. Αλλά θα τους προκαλείς και φρίκη και θα είσαι μια προειδοποίηση γι’ αυτούς, όταν θα εκτελέσω τις αποφάσεις μου εναντίον σου με οργή, με θυμό και με αυστηρές ποινές. Εγώ ο Κύριος το λέω.

16 »Θα περιορίσω τον εφοδιασμό σας σε ψωμί και θα σας προκαλέσω ακόμα μεγαλύτερη πείνα, τόση που θα τη νιώθετε σαν βέλη θανατηφόρα να σας τρυπούν τα σωθικά, για να σας καταστρέψω και να σας εξαφανίσω. 17 Εκτός όμως από την πείνα, θα στείλω εναντίον σας και άγρια θηρία για να θανατώσουν τα παιδιά σας· οι αρρώστιες και η βία θα σας βρουν, κι εγώ θα σας καταδιώξω με το ξίφος μου. Εγώ ο Κύριος το λέω».

1 And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee a barber’s razor, and cause it to pass upon thine head and upon thy beard: then take thee balances to weigh, and divide the hair. 2 Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and thou shalt take a third part, and smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them. 3 Thou shalt also take thereof a few in number, and bind them in thy skirts.*5.3 skirts: Heb. wings 4 Then take of them again, and cast them into the midst of the fire, and burn them in the fire; for thereof shall a fire come forth into all the house of Israel.

5 Thus saith the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her. 6 And she hath changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them. 7 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye multiplied more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my judgments, neither have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you; 8 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, am against thee, and will execute judgments in the midst of thee in the sight of the nations. 9 And I will do in thee that which I have not done, and whereunto I will not do any more the like, because of all thine abominations. 10 Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in thee, and the whole remnant of thee will I scatter into all the winds. 11 Wherefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD; Surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, therefore will I also diminish thee; neither shall mine eye spare, neither will I have any pity.

12 A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them. 13 Thus shall mine anger be accomplished, and I will cause my fury to rest upon them, and I will be comforted: and they shall know that I the LORD have spoken it in my zeal, when I have accomplished my fury in them. 14 Moreover I will make thee waste, and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of all that pass by. 15 So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment unto the nations that are round about thee, when I shall execute judgments in thee in anger and in fury and in furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it. 16 When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread: 17 So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts, and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee; and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it.
