1 Μετά απ’ αυτά τα γεγονότα, με πλησίασαν μερικοί άρχοντες του λαού και μου είπαν: «Οι ιερείς, οι λευίτες και ο υπόλοιπος λαός του Ισραήλ έχουν δεχτεί τις επιδράσεις των άλλων λαών αυτής εδώ της χώρας. Τηρούν τα βδελυρά έθιμα των Χαναναίων, των Χετταίων, των Φερεζαίων, των Ιεβουσαίων, των Αμμωνιτών, των Μωαβιτών, των Αιγυπτίων και των Αμορραίων. 2 Αυτό συνέβη γιατί οι Ισραηλίτες και τα παιδιά τους έχουν πάρει γυναίκες από τις κόρες αυτών των λαών κι έτσι ο λαός του Θεού έχει έρθει σε επιμειξία με τους πληθυσμούς αυτής της χώρας· οι άρχοντες μάλιστα και οι αξιωματούχοι πρωτοστατούν σ’ αυτήν την απιστία».

3 Όταν άκουσα αυτά τα πράγματα, έσκισα τα ρούχα μου*Βλ. υποσ. εις Γεν 37:29. και το μανδύα μου, ξερίζωσα τα μαλλιά και τα γένια μου και κάθισα σε μια μεριά φοβερά ταραγμένος. 4 Γύρω μου συγκεντρώθηκαν όλοι όσοι έτρεμαν την κρίση του Θεού του Ισραήλ για την απιστία αυτών που είχαν γυρίσει από την αιχμαλωσία, ενώ εγώ καθόμουν σε μια μεριά ταραγμένος ως την ώρα της βραδινής θυσίας.

5 Όταν έφτασε η ώρα της βραδινής θυσίας σηκώθηκα από ’κει που είχα πέσει ταπεινωμένος και με σχισμένα τα ρούχα μου και το μανδύα μου έπεσα στα γόνατα, άπλωσα τα χέρια μου στον Κύριο, το Θεό μου, 6 και είπα: «Θεέ μου, είμαι φοβερά ταραγμένος και ντρέπομαι να σηκώσω τα μάτια μου σ’ εσένα, γιατί οι ανομίες μας έχουν γίνει τόσες πολλές, που μας έπνιξαν· η ενοχή μας έχει γίνει σωρός, που φτάνει μέχρι τον ουρανό. 7 Από τον καιρό των προγόνων μας μέχρι σήμερα, η ενοχή μας ήταν πάντα μεγάλη. Εξαιτίας των ανομιών μας ο λαός μας, οι βασιλιάδες μας και οι ιερείς μας παραδοθήκαμε στην εξουσία των βασιλιάδων των χωρών αυτών. Και μέχρι σήμερα μας κατέσφαζαν, μας είχαν αιχμαλώτους, μας λεηλατούσαν και μας εξευτέλιζαν. 8 Αλλά εδώ και λίγον καιρό εσύ Κύριε, Θεέ μας, μας έδειξες την εύνοιά σου, και σ’ ένα υπόλοιπο από μας που επέζησε του επέτρεψες να εγκατασταθεί μόνιμα στον άγιο τόπο σου. Έτσι αναζωογόνησες τις καρδιές μας και μας έδωσες χαρά για λίγον καιρό μέσα στη σκλαβιά μας. 9 Πράγματι είμαστε δούλοι! Αλλά εσύ, Θεέ μας, δε μας εγκατέλειψες στη δουλεία μας. Επειδή μας αγαπάς, προκάλεσες την εύνοια του βασιλιά των Περσών για μας, ώστε να μπορέσουμε να ξαναχτίσουμε το ναό σου, ν’ αναστηλώσουμε τα ερείπιά του κι έτσι να βρίσκουμε ένα ασφαλές καταφύγιο στην Ιουδαία και στην Ιερουσαλήμ. 10 Τώρα όμως, Θεέ μας, τι να πούμε, που μετά απ’ όλα αυτά εμείς έχουμε λησμονήσει τις εντολές 11 που μας έδωσες με τους δούλους σου, τους προφήτες; Πράγματι, μας είχες πει τότε: "η χώρα που πάτε να κατακτήσετε είναι ακάθαρτη, μολυσμένη από τους λαούς της περιοχής. Την έχουν γεμίσει με τα βδελυρά τους είδωλα από τη μιαν άκρη ως την άλλη. 12 Γι’ αυτό δεν θα δίνετε τις κόρες σας στους γιους τους για γυναίκες, ούτε θα παίρνετε τις κόρες τους για γυναίκες στους γιους σας. Δε θα επιδιώξετε ποτέ την ειρήνη τους και το καλό τους, αν θέλετε να γίνετε ισχυροί, ν’ απολαμβάνετε τα αγαθά της χώρας και να την αφήσετε στους γιους σας κληρονομιά παντοτινή". 13 Κι όμως, εσύ, Θεέ μας, δε μας τιμώρησες όσο μας άξιζε για τις παρανομίες μας, αλλά επέτρεψες να επιζήσουμε ελεύθεροι όλοι εμείς, που τώρα βρισκόμαστε εδώ. Μετά, όμως, απ’ όσα μας έχουν βρει εξαιτίας των αμαρτιών μας και της μεγάλης ενοχής μας, 14 πώς να παραβούμε πάλι τις εντολές σου και να συνάψουμε μικτούς γάμους με τους λαούς που τηρούν όλα αυτά τα βδελυρά έθιμα; Δεν θα οργιζόσουν εναντίον μας, σε σημείο να μας καταστρέψεις εντελώς και κανένας από μας να μην επιζήσει; 15 Κύριε, Θεέ του Ισραήλ, εσύ είσαι δίκαιος, γιατί επέτρεψες να επιβιώσει ένα υπόλοιπο από μας. Και σήμερα εμείς στεκόμαστε εδώ ένοχοι ενώπιόν σου, που κανένας δε θα μπορούσε να σταθεί μπροστά σου σε τέτοια κατάσταση».

1 Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. 3 And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. 4 Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.

5 And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God,*9.5 heaviness: or, affliction 6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.*9.6 trespass: or, guiltiness 7 Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. 8 And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.*9.8 space: Heb. moment*9.8 a nail: or, a pin: that is, a constant and sure abode 9 For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.*9.9 to repair: Heb. to set up 10 And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, 11 Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.*9.11 by: Heb. by the hand of*9.11 from…: Heb. from mouth to mouth 12 Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever. 13 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;*9.13 hast punished…: Heb. hast withheld beneath our iniquities 14 Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? 15 O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
