1 Ακολουθεί πίνακας των αρχηγών των συγγενειών, που έφυγαν μαζί μου από τη Βαβυλώνα τον καιρό της βασιλείας του Αρταξέρξη:

2 Ο Γηρσών, από τη συγγένεια του Φινεές, ο Δανιήλ, από τη συγγένεια του Ιθάμαρ και ο Χαττούς, γιος του Σεχανία, από τη συγγένεια του Δαβίδ. 3 Ο Ζαχαρίας, από τη συγγένεια του Φαρώς, και μαζί του ήταν καταγεγραμμένοι εκατόν πενήντα άντρες· 4 ο Ελιωεναΐ, γιος του Ζεραχία, από τη συγγένεια του Φαχάθ-Μωάβ, με διακόσιους άντρες· 5 ο Σεχανίας, γιος του Ιααζιήλ, από τη συγγένεια του Ζαττού,*από τη συγγένεια του Ζαττού, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «από τη συγγένεια του Σεχανία, ο γιος του ο Ιααζιήλ...» με τριακόσιους άντρες· 6 ο Εβέδ, γιος του Ιωνάθαν, από τη συγγένεια του Αδίν, με πενήντα άντρες· 7 ο Ιεσαΐας, γιος του Γοθολία, από τη συγγένεια του Ελάμ, με εβδομήντα άντρες· 8 ο Ζεβαδίας, γιος του Μιχαήλ, από τη συγγένεια του Σεφατία, με ογδόντα άντρες· 9 ο Οβαδίας, γιος του Ιεχιήλ, από τη συγγένεια του Ιωάβ, με διακόσιους δεκαοκτώ άντρες· 10 ο Σελωμείθ, γιος του Ιωσηφία, από τη συγγένεια του Βανί,*από τη συγγένεια του Βανί, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «από τη συγγένεια του Σελωμείθ, ο γιος του ο Ιωσηφία...» με εκατόν εξήντα άντρες· 11 ο Ζαχαρίας, γιος του Βεβαΐ, από τη συγγένεια του Βεβαΐ, με είκοσι οκτώ άντρες· 12 ο Ιωχανάν, γιος του Ακκατάν, από τη συγγένεια του Αζγάδ, με εκατόν δέκα άντρες· 13 οι Ελιφαλέτ, Ιεϊήλ και Σεμαΐα, νεότεροι απόγονοι από τη συγγένεια του Αδωνικάμ, με εξήντα άντρες· 14 ο Ουθαΐ και ο Ζαββούδ, από τη συγγένεια του Βιγβαΐ, με εβδομήντα άντρες.

15 Όλους αυτούς τους συγκέντρωσα στον ποταμό που περνάει από την Ααβά*Ααβά. Περιοχή άγνωστη στη Βαβυλώνα, που προφανώς έδωσε το όνομά της και στον ίδιο τον ποταμό. Βλ. στ. 21. κι εκεί κατασκηνώσαμε τρεις μέρες. Είδα ότι ανάμεσα στο λαό υπήρχαν ιερείς, αλλά δε βρήκα κανένα λευίτη. 16 Τότε κάλεσα τους αρχηγούς Ελεάζαρ, Αριήλ, Σεμαΐα, Αλωνάμ, Ιαρίβ, Ελνάθαμ, Νάθαν, Ζαχαρία και Μεσουλλάμ, και τους δασκάλους Ιωϊαρίβ και Ελνάθαμ, 17 και τους έστειλα στον Ιδδώ, αρχηγό της κοινότητας Χασιφία· προηγουμένως τους είπα τι να πουν στον Ιδδώ και στους συντρόφους του,*στον Ιδδώ και στους συντρόφους του, κατά τους Ο΄. Το εβρ. έχει «στον Ιδδώ, το σύντροφό του». τους υπηρέτες του ναού που κατοικούσαν στην περιοχή Χασιφία, ώστε να μας στείλουν υπηρέτες για το ναό του Θεού μας.

18 Χάρη στην εύνοια του Θεού απέναντί μας, αυτοί συμφώνησαν και μας έστειλαν έναν άντρα σοφό, το Σερεβία, από τη συγγένεια του Μααλί και απόγονο του Λευί, γιου του Ιακώβ, μαζί με τους γιους του και τους συγγενείς του συνολικά δεκαοκτώ άντρες· 19 επίσης μας έστειλαν το Χασαβία και μαζί του τον Ιεσαΐα, από τη συγγένεια του Μεραρί, με τους συγγενείς του και τους γιους του, είκοσι άντρες. 20 Κι από το κατώτερο προσωπικό του ναού, μάς έστειλαν διακόσιους είκοσι άντρες, απογόνους υπηρετών του ναού, που ο Δαβίδ και οι αξιωματούχοι του τους είχαν διορίσει στην υπηρεσία των λευιτών. Όλοι αυτοί ήταν καταγεγραμμένοι ονομαστικά.

21 Τότε εκεί κοντά στον ποταμό Ααβά κήρυξα νηστεία, για να ταπεινωθούμε ενώπιον του Θεού μας και να του ζητήσουμε να προστατεύσει εμάς, τα παιδιά μας και τα υπάρχοντά μας. 22 Ντράπηκα να ζητήσω από το βασιλιά στρατιωτική δύναμη και ιππείς για να μας προστατεύσουν στο δρόμο μας από τους εχθρούς μας· του είχαμε πει ότι το χέρι του Θεού μας προστατεύει όλους εκείνους που τον αναζητούν με αγαθή πρόθεση, και η οργή του ξεσπάει με δύναμη ενάντια σ’ εκείνους που τον εγκαταλείπουν. 23 Νηστέψαμε, λοιπόν, και παρακαλέσαμε το Θεό μας να μας προστατεύσει· κι αυτός άκουσε την παράκλησή μας.

24 Μετά ξεχώρισα δώδεκα από τους διευθύνοντες ιερείς, καθώς και τους Ζεραχία και Χασαβία και μαζί μ’ αυτούς δέκα άντρες από τους συγγενείς τους. 25 Τους ζύγισα το ασήμι, το χρυσάφι και τα σκεύη που είχαν προσφέρει για το ναό του Θεού μας ο βασιλιάς, οι σύμβουλοι και οι άρχοντές του, καθώς και όλοι οι Ισραηλίτες που βρίσκονταν στη χώρα. 26 Τους μέτρησα εξακόσια πενήντα ασημένια τάλαντα, εκατό ασημένια σκεύη και εκατό τάλαντα χρυσά· 27 είκοσι χρυσά δοχεία αξίας χιλίων δαρεικών*δαρεικών. Βλ. υποσ. εις Α΄ Χρ 29:7. και δύο σκεύη καμωμένα από ωραίο λαμπερό χαλκό· τόσο πολύτιμα έμοιαζαν, σαν να ήταν από χρυσάφι.

28 Τους είπα: «Όπως εσείς είστε αφιερωμένοι στην υπηρεσία του Κυρίου, έτσι και τα σκεύη είναι κι αυτά αφιερωμένα στον Κύριο. Αυτό το ασήμι και το χρυσάφι είναι προαιρετική προσφορά στον Κύριο, το Θεό των προγόνων μας. 29 Φυλάξτε τα, λοιπόν, με προσοχή, ωσότου τα μετρήσετε μπροστά στους προϊσταμένους των ιερέων και των λευιτών, και στους αρχηγούς των συγγενειών του Ισραήλ στην Ιερουσαλήμ, στα παραοικοδομήματα του ναού του Κυρίου».

30 Έτσι, οι ιερείς και οι λευίτες παρέλαβαν το ασήμι, το χρυσάφι και τα πολύτιμα σκεύη, για να τα μεταφέρουν στην Ιερουσαλήμ, στο ναό του Θεού μας.

31 Τη δωδέκατη μέρα του πρώτου μήνα φύγαμε από τον ποταμό Ααβά για να πάμε στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Ο Θεός ήταν μαζί μας και μας προστάτευε στο δρόμο από τις ενέδρες των εχθρών μας. 32 Φτάσαμε στην Ιερουσαλήμ και ξεκουραστήκαμε εκεί τρεις μέρες. 33 Την τέταρτη μέρα μετρήσαμε το ασήμι, το χρυσάφι και τα πολύτιμα σκεύη στο ναό του Θεού μας και τα παραδώσαμε στον ιερέα Μερημώθ, γιο του Ουρία. Μαζί του ήταν παρών ο Ελεάζαρ, γιος του Φινεές κι επίσης οι λευίτες Ιωζαβάδ, γιος του Ιησού και Νωαδίας, γιος του Βιννούι. 34 Τα πάντα μετρήθηκαν και ζυγίστηκαν και το βάρος τους καταγράφτηκε.

35 Τότε αυτοί που είχαν έρθει από την αιχμαλωσία πρόσφεραν ολοκαυτώματα στο Θεό του Ισραήλ, δώδεκα μοσχάρια, για όλες τις φυλές των Ισραηλιτών, ενενήντα έξι κριάρια, εβδομήντα εφτά αρνιά, δώδεκα τράγους, για την εξιλέωση της αμαρτίας. Όλα αυτά τα ζώα κάηκαν εντελώς προς τιμήν του Κυρίου.

36 Επίσης επέδωσαν τα βασιλικά διατάγματα στους σατράπες και στους κυβερνήτες της επαρχίας δυτικά του Ευφράτη·*της επαρχίας... Ευφράτη. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 4:10. κι αυτοί πρόσφεραν τη βοήθειά τους στο λαό σε ό,τι αφορούσε το ναό του Θεού.

15 And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.*8.15 abode: or, pitched 16 Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding. 17 And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God.*8.17 I told…: Heb. I put words in their mouth 18 And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen; 19 And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty; 20 Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.

21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. 23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

24 Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them, 25 And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered: 26 I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents; 27 Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold.*8.27 fine…: Heb. yellow, or, shining brass*8.27 precious: Heb. desirable 28 And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the LORD; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the LORD God of your fathers. 29 Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD. 30 So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.

31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way. 32 And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.

33 Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites; 34 By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time. 35 Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.

36 And they delivered the king’s commissions unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.
