1 Κατάλογος των κατοίκων της επαρχίας (Ιουδαίας), που επέστρεψαν από την αιχμαλωσία της Βαβυλώνας, όπου τους είχε μεταφέρει ως αιχμαλώτους ο βασιλιάς της Βαβυλώνας Ναβουχοδονόσορ. Όλοι τους γύρισαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ και στη χώρα του Ιούδα, καθένας στην πόλη του. 2 Στην πορεία της επιστροφής αρχηγοί τους ήταν οι Ζοροβάβελ, Ιησούς, Νεεμίας, Σεραΐας, Ρεελαΐας, Μαρδοχαίος, Βιλσάν, Μισπάρ, Βιγβάι, Ρεχούμ και Βαανά.

Ακολουθεί κατάλογος κατά συγγένειες με τον αριθμό των αντρών του λαού του Ισραήλ, που επέστρεψαν από την αιχμαλωσία:

Η συγγένεια του Ιεδαΐα (απόγονοι του Ιησού), εννιακόσιοι εβδομήντα τρεις άντρες· 37 του Ιμμίρ, χίλιοι πενήντα δύο· 38 του Πασχούρ, χίλιοι διακόσιοι σαράντα επτά 39 και του Χαρίμ, χίλιοι δέκα επτά.

40 Οι συγγένειες των λευιτών που επέστρεψαν ήταν:

Του Ιησού και του Καδμιήλ (απόγονοι του Ωδουΐα), εβδομήντα τέσσερις άντρες.

41 Την ομάδα των ψαλτών αποτελούσαν εκατόν είκοσι οκτώ απόγονοι του Ασάφ.

42 Οι συγγένειες των θυρωρών ήταν: Του Σαλλούμ, του Ατέρ, του Ταλμών, του Ακκούβ, του Χατιτά, του Σωβαΐ, σύνολο εκατόν τριάντα εννέα άντρες.

43 Οι συγγένειες των υπηρετών του ναού, που επέστρεψαν από την αιχμαλωσία ήταν: Του Σιχά, του Χασουφά, του Ταββαώθ, 44 του Κερώς, του Σιαά, του Φαδών, 45 του Λεβανά, του Χαγαβά, του Ακκούβ, 46 του Χαγάβ, του Σαλμαΐ, του Χανάν, 47 του Γιδδήλ, του Γαχάρ, του Ρεαΐα, 48 του Ρεσίν, του Νεκωδά, του Γαζζάμ, 49 του Ουζζά, του Φασεάχ, του Βεσαΐ, 50 του Ασενά, του Μεουνείμ, του Νεφουσείμ, 51 του Βακββούκ, του Χακουφά, του Χαρχούρ, 52 του Βασλούθ, του Μεχιδά, του Χαρεά, 53 του Βαρκώς, του Σίσερα, του Θάμαχ, 54 του Νεσιάχ και του Χατιφά.

55 Οι συγγένειες των απογόνων των δούλων του Σολομώντα*των δούλων του Σολομώντα. Δεν είναι γνωστό περί τίνων ακριβώς πρόκειται. Σύμφωνα με το στ. 58 αυτή η ομάδα δεν θα πρέπει να διαφέρει πολύ από τους «υπηρέτες του ναού» (στ. 43). ήταν: του Σωταΐ, του Σωφέρεθ, του Φερουδά, 56 του Ιααλά, του Δαρκών, του Γιδδήλ, 57 του Σαφατία, του Χαττίλ, του Φοχερέθ, του Σεβαΐμ, του Αμί.

58 Όλοι μαζί οι απόγονοι των υπηρετών του ναού και των δούλων του Σολομώντα ήταν τριακόσιοι ενενήντα δύο άντρες.

59 Από τις πόλεις Τελ-Μελάχ, Τελ-Χαρσά, Χερούβ-Αδδάν και Ιμμήρ επέστρεψαν ιερατικές συγγένειες, οι οποίες όμως δεν μπόρεσαν να φέρουν τις απαραίτητες πληροφορίες για τις οικογένειες των προγόνων τους, ώστε να αποδείξουν ότι κατάγονταν από Ισραηλίτες. 60 Αυτοί ήταν απόγονοι του Δελαΐα, του Τωβία και του Νεκωδά, σύνολο εξακόσιοι πενήντα δύο άντρες.

61 Το ίδιο συνέβη με ορισμένους άλλους απογόνους ιερέων: Του Χαβαΐα, του Ακκώς, του Βαρζιλλαΐ (ο οποίος ονομαζόταν έτσι γιατί είχε πάρει γυναίκα του μια από τις κόρες του Γαλααδίτη Βαρζιλλαΐ). 62 Όλοι αυτοί αναζήτησαν την εγγραφή τους στους γενεαλογικούς καταλόγους των προγόνων τους αλλά δε βρέθηκαν εκεί· έτσι, αποκλείστηκαν από την ιεροσύνη. 63 Ο ίδιος ο κυβερνήτης τούς απαγόρευσε να τρώνε από τις αγιότατες προσφορές, ωσότου ένας ιερέας συμβουλευτεί τα Ουρίμ και τα Θουμμίμ.*Ουρίμ και τα Θουμμίμ. 64 Όλη η σύναξη μαζί έφτανε τους σαράντα δύο χιλιάδες τριακόσιους εξήντα άντρες, 65 εκτός από τους δούλους τους, άντρες και γυναίκες, που έφταναν τις εφτά χιλιάδες τριακόσια τριάντα εφτά άτομα· επίσης υπήρχαν διακόσιοι ψάλτες και ψάλτριες. 66 Μαζί τους είχαν εφτακόσια τριάντα έξι άλογα, διακόσια σαράντα πέντε μουλάρια, 67 τετρακόσιες τριάντα πέντε καμήλες και έξι χιλιάδες εφτακόσια είκοσι γαϊδούρια.

68 Μόλις έφτασαν στο ναό του Κυρίου, στην Ιερουσαλήμ, μερικοί αρχηγοί συγγενειών έκαναν προαιρετικές προσφορές για να ξαναχτιστεί ο ναός του Θεού στη θέση όπου ήταν πρωτύτερα. 69 Έδωσαν ό,τι μπορούσαν για να χτιστεί το έργο: Εξήντα μία χιλιάδες χρυσούς δαρεικούς,*δαρεικούς. Βλ. υποσ. εις Α΄ Χρ 29:7. πέντε χιλιάδες ασημένιες μνες και εκατό ιερατικές στολές.

70 Οι ιερείς, οι λευίτες και μερικοί από το λαό, όπως θυρωροί, ψάλτες και υπηρέτες του ναού, εγκαταστάθηκαν στις πόλεις στις οποίες τους κατένειμαν. Ενώ όλοι οι άλλοι Ισραηλίτες εγκαταστάθηκαν στις πόλεις των προγόνων τους.

68 And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place: 69 They gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work threescore and one thousand drams of gold, and five thousand pound of silver, and one hundred priests’ garments. 70 So the priests, and the Levites, and some of the people, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, and all Israel in their cities.
