1 Αυτοί είναι οι νόμοι και τα προστάγματα που θα προσέξτε να εφαρμόζετε, όλες τις μέρες της ζωής σας στη χώρα, που σας δίνει για ιδιοκτησία ο Κύριος, ο Θεός των προγόνων σας.

2 Θα καταστρέψετε εντελώς όλους τους ιερούς τόπους που βρίσκονται πάνω στα ψηλά βουνά, στους λόφους, κάτω από τις σκιές των δέντρων, όπου τα έθνη που θα διώξετε λατρεύουν τους θεούς τους. 3 Θα γκρεμίσετε τα θυσιαστήριά τους, θα συντρίψετε τις πέτρινες και θα κάψετε τις ξύλινες λατρευτικές τους στήλες, θα κομματιάσετε τα είδωλα των θεών τους και θα εξαφανίσετε τα ονόματά τους απ’ αυτόν τον τόπο.

4 Κατά τη λατρεία του Κυρίου, του Θεού σας, εσείς δεν θα κάνετε ό,τι κάνουν αυτά τα έθνη. 5 Θα πηγαίνετε και θα τον λατρεύετε μόνο στον τόπο που απ’ όλα τα εδάφη των φυλών σας θα διαλέξει εκείνος. Αυτός θα είναι ο τόπος κατοικίας του και λατρείας του ονόματός του. 6 Εκεί θα προσφέρετε τα ολοκαυτώματά σας, τις θυσίες σας, τις δεκάτες σας, τις εκούσιες προσφορές σας, τα τάματά σας, και τα πρωτογέννητα των βοδιών και των προβάτων σας. 7 Εκεί, ενώπιον του Κυρίου του Θεού σας, θα τρώτε μαζί με τις οικογένειές σας και θα χαιρόσαστε για όσα θα έχετε πετύχει, και που θα τα έχει αυτός ευλογήσει.

8 Δε θα λατρεύετε τον Κύριο όπως εμείς εδώ σήμερα, που κάνουμε ό,τι νομίζει σωστό ο καθένας. 9 Αυτό γίνεται επειδή δεν έχετε ακόμα μπει στη χώρα που θα σας δώσει για ιδιοκτησία σας ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας· εκεί θα ζείτε ειρηνικά. 10 Έχετε ακόμη να περάσετε τον Ιορδάνη, πριν εγκατασταθείτε στη χώρα που σας δίνει ο Κύριος, για να την κατακτήσετε. Εκεί θα σας εξασφαλίσει ειρήνη απ’ όλους τους γύρω εχθρούς σας και θα ζείτε με ασφάλεια. 11 Τότε, στον τόπο που θα διαλέξει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, για να λατρεύεται το όνομά του, εκεί θα προσφέρετε όλα όσα σας έχω διατάξει: τα ολοκαυτώματά σας, τις θυσίες σας, τις δεκάτες σας, τις προσφορές και ό,τι αποφασίζετε να προσφέρετε για να εκπληρώσετε τα τάματά σας προς αυτόν. 12 Θα χαιρόσαστε ενώπιόν του εσείς, οι γιοι σας και οι κόρες σας, οι δούλοι και οι δούλες σας, καθώς και οι Λευίτες που θα ζουν στις πόλεις σας, γιατί αυτοί δεν θα έχουν κληρονομικό μερίδιο όπως εσείς.

13 Προσέχετε, να μην προσφέρετε τα ολοκαυτώματά σας σε οποιονδήποτε τόπο βρίσκετε μπροστά σας. 14 Θα τα προσφέρετε στον τόπο που θα διαλέξει ο Κύριος, στο έδαφος μιας από τις φυλές σας· μόνον εκεί θα προσφέρετε τα ολοκαυτώματά σας και εκεί θα κάνετε όλα όσα εγώ σας διατάζω.

15 Μπορείτε, όμως να σφάζετε και να τρώτε κρέας παντού όπου θα κατοικείτε, όσες φορές θέλετε, ανάλογα με τις ευλογίες που θα σας δίνει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας. Από το κρέας αυτό μπορούν να τρώνε τόσο οι καθαροί όσο και οι ακάθαρτοι, σαν αυτό να ήταν ζαρκάδι ή ελάφι.*σαν... ελάφι. Το κυνήγι γενικά δεν υπαγόταν στις διατάξεις περί καθαρότητος των θυσιαζομένων ζώων. Μπορούσαν να το τρώνε ελεύθερα.16 Μόνο που δε θα τρώτε το αίμα του ζώου· θα το χύνετε στη γη, όπως το νερό.

17 Δεν μπορείτε εκεί που θα κατοικείτε να τρώτε τη δεκάτη του σταριού, του κρασιού ή του λαδιού σας ούτε τα πρωτογέννητα των βοδιών και των προβάτων σας, που θα τα προσφέρετε ως τάματα ή ως εκούσιες προσφορές. 18 Όλα αυτά θα τα τρώτε εσείς και τα παιδιά σας, οι δούλοι σας και οι Λευίτες που μένουν στις πόλεις σας, αλλά ενώπιον του Κυρίου του Θεού σας, στον τόπο που εκείνος θα έχει διαλέξει. Έτσι θα χαιρόσαστε ενώπιόν του για όσα θα έχετε πετύχει. 19 Προσέχετε να μην παραμελήσετε τους Λευίτες όσο θα ζείτε στη χώρα σας.

20 Όταν ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, διευρύνει τα σύνορά σας, όπως σας το υποσχέθηκε, κι επιθυμήσετε κρέας, μπορείτε να φάτε όσο θέλετε. 21 Αν είναι μακριά σας ο τόπος που θα διαλέξει ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, για να λατρεύεται εκεί το όνομά του, τότε θα σφάζετε ένα ζώο από τα βόδια σας ή από τα πρόβατά σας, που θα σας έχει δώσει ο Κύριος και θα τρώτε εκεί στις πόλεις σας, όσο τραβά η όρεξή σας, σύμφωνα με όσα σας διέταξα. 22 Όλοι, καθαροί και ακάθαρτοι, θα μπορούν να παίρνουν μέρος σ’ αυτό το γεύμα, όπως όταν τρώτε ζαρκάδι ή ελάφι.*όπως... ελάφι. Βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 15.23 Μόνο να φροντίζετε να μην τρώτε το αίμα, γιατί το αίμα είναι ζωή, και δεν πρέπει να τρώτε τη ζωή μαζί με το κρέας. 24 Δε θα τρώτε λοιπόν το αίμα· θα το χύνετε στη γη, όπως το νερό. 25 Δεν θα το τρώτε, για να ευτυχείτε εσείς και οι απόγονοί σας. Έτσι θα κάνετε το σωστό ενώπιον του Κυρίου.

26 Αλλά τα ζώα που τα έχετε αφιερώσει στον Κύριο, καθώς κι εκείνα που τα έχετε τάξει, θα τα παίρνετε και θα τα φέρνετε στον τόπο που εκείνος θα έχει διαλέξει. 27 Όταν θα φέρνετε τα ολοκαυτώματά σας, θα προσφέρετε το κρέας μαζί με το αίμα στο θυσιαστήριο του Κυρίου, του Θεού σας· το αίμα, όμως, των άλλων θυσιών σας θα πρέπει να το χύνετε πλάι στο θυσιαστήριο και το κρέας θα το τρώτε.

28 Να ακούτε και να εφαρμόζετε όλα αυτά τα λόγια που σας διατάζω· έτσι θα κάνετε το καλό και το αρεστό στον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, και θα είστε για πάντα ευτυχισμένοι εσείς και οι απόγονοί σας.

29 Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, θα εξολοθρεύσει στο πέρασμά σας τα έθνη που είναι εγκατεστημένα στη χώρα που πάτε να κυριεύσετε, και θα εγκατασταθείτε εσείς σ’ αυτήν. 30 Προσέξτε τότε μήπως παγιδευτείτε κι ακολουθήσετε, το παράδειγμα εκείνων, μετά που θα τους έχει εξολοθρεύσει ο Κύριος, και ζητήσετε πληροφορίες για το πώς λάτρευαν τους θεούς τους, για να κάνετε κι εσείς τα ίδια. 31 Μη λατρεύσετε τον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, με τον τρόπο που λατρεύουν εκείνοι τους θεούς τους, γιατί κατά τη λατρεία των θεών τους κάνουν αισχρές πράξεις, που τις μισεί ο Κύριος· ακόμα και τους γιους τους και τις κόρες τους τούς καίνε στη φωτιά, θυσία στους θεούς τους.

1 These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth. 2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:*12.2 possess: or, inherit 3 And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.*12.3 overthrow: Heb. break down 4 Ye shall not do so unto the LORD your God.

5 But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come: 6 And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks: 7 And there ye shall eat before the LORD your God, and ye shall rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households, wherein the LORD thy God hath blessed thee. 8 Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes. 9 For ye are not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance, which the LORD your God giveth you. 10 But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety; 11 Then there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the LORD:*12.11 your choice…: Heb. the choice of your vows 12 And ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God, ye, and your sons, and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the Levite that is within your gates; forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you. 13 Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest: 14 But in the place which the LORD shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee. 15 Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee: the unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the roebuck, and as of the hart. 16 Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.

17 Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the tithe of thy corn, or of thy wine, or of thy oil, or the firstlings of thy herds or of thy flock, nor any of thy vows which thou vowest, nor thy freewill offerings, or heave offering of thine hand: 18 But thou must eat them before the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD thy God shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates: and thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God in all that thou puttest thine hands unto. 19 Take heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite as long as thou livest upon the earth.*12.19 as long…: Heb. all thy days

20 When the LORD thy God shall enlarge thy border, as he hath promised thee, and thou shalt say, I will eat flesh, because thy soul longeth to eat flesh; thou mayest eat flesh, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after. 21 If the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to put his name there be too far from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy herd and of thy flock, which the LORD hath given thee, as I have commanded thee, and thou shalt eat in thy gates whatsoever thy soul lusteth after. 22 Even as the roebuck and the hart is eaten, so thou shalt eat them: the unclean and the clean shall eat of them alike. 23 Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.*12.23 be…: Heb. be strong 24 Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it upon the earth as water. 25 Thou shalt not eat it; that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD. 26 Only thy holy things which thou hast, and thy vows, thou shalt take, and go unto the place which the LORD shall choose: 27 And thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God: and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out upon the altar of the LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh. 28 Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God.

29 When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;*12.29 succeedest…: Heb. inheritest, or, possessest them 30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.*12.30 by…: Heb. after them 31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.*12.31 to the: Heb. of the 32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.
