1 Ένα κλωνάρι θα φυτρώσει απ’ τον κορμό του Ιεσσαί

κι ένα κλαδί θα ξεπροβάλει*θα ξεπροβάλει. Το εβρ. έχει «θα καρποφορήσει». από τις ρίζες του.

2 Πάνω του θ’ αναπαύεται το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου

το πνεύμα αυτό που θα του δίνει σοφία και σύνεση,

την ικανότητα ν’ αποφασίζει

τη δύναμη να εκτελεί,

τη γνώση του Κυρίου,

το σεβασμό στον Κύριο.

3 Η πιο μεγάλη του ευχαρίστηση

θα ’ναι να σέβεται τον Κύριο.

Τίποτα δε θα κρίνει απ’ τα φαινόμενα

ούτε θ’ αποφασίζει απ’ τα λεγόμενα.

4 Αλλά θα κρίνει με δικαιοσύνη τους φτωχούς

και θα υπερασπίζεται μ’ ευθύτητα τους ταπεινούς της χώρας.

Χάρη στις αυστηρές του εντολές

στη χώρα θα κρατά την τάξη

και με την κρίση του

θα θανατώνονται οι ασεβείς.

5 Η δικαιοσύνη κι η πιστότητα

θα ’ναι γι’ αυτόν σαν το ζωνάρι

που τυλίγει τη μέση του.

6 Τότε θα κάθεται ο λύκος παρέα με το αρνί

και θα κοιμάται ο πάνθηρας με το κατσίκι αντάμα.

Το μοσχαράκι και το λιονταρόπουλο

θα βόσκουνε μαζί

κι ένα μικρό παιδί

θα τα οδηγάει.

7 Η αγελάδα κι η αρκούδα την ίδια θα ’χουνε βοσκή

και τα μικρά τους το ίδιο το λημέρι·

το λιοντάρι θα τρέφεται

καθώς το βόδι με άχυρο.

8 Το βρέφος άφοβα θα παίζει στη φωλιά της έχιδνας,

το νήπιο που μόλις αποκόπηκε από της μάνας του το γάλα

θ’ απλώνει το χεράκι του στης κόμπρας τη σπηλιά.

9 Κανένας δε θα προξενεί στον άλλον βλάβη ούτε κακό

πουθενά στ’ όρος το άγιο του Θεού,

γιατί η γνώση του Κυρίου

τη χώρα θα σκεπάζει

όπως σκεπάζουν τα νερά τη θάλασσα.

10 Σαν έρθει εκείνη η μέρα, το βλαστάρι από τη ρίζα του Ιεσσαί

εκεί θα στέκεται

για τους λαούς σημαία.

Τα έθνη θα ’ρχονται να του

ζητάνε συμβουλή

και κατοικία του θα είν’ η δόξα του Κυρίου.

11 Όταν έρθει εκείνη η μέρα, ο Κύριος θα υψώσει για δεύτερη φορά το χέρι του, για να λυτρώσει το υπόλοιπο του λαού του που απόμεινε, από την Ασσυρία, την Αίγυπτο, την Παθρώς, την Αιθιοπία, την Ελάμ, τη Βαβυλώνα, τη Χαμάθ κι από τις χώρες τις παραλιακές. 12 Θα δώσει το σύνθημα στους λαούς και θα συνάξει τους διεσπαρμένους του Ισραήλ και τους διασκορπισμένους θα ξαναφέρει του Ιούδα από τις τέσσερις γωνιές της γης. 13 Τότε θα πάψει η ζήλεια του Εφραΐμ,*Εφραΐμ. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 7:2. και οι εχθροπραξίες του Ιούδα. Ο Εφραΐμ δεν θα ζηλεύει τον Ιούδα και ο Ιούδας δεν θα εχθρεύεται τον Εφραΐμ. 14 Αλλά θα εξορμήσουν μαζί ενάντια στους Φιλισταίους δυτικά, προς τη Θάλασσα, μαζί θα λεηλατήσουν και τους λαούς προς τα ανατολικά. Θ’ απλώσουν χέρι ενάντια στην Εδώμ και στη Μωάβ κι οι Αμμωνίτες θα υποταχθούν σ’ αυτούς.*Οι Εδωμίτες, οι Μωαβίτες και οι Αμμωνίτες, λαοί γειτονικοί των Ισραηλιτών, είχαν στο παρελθόν υποταχθεί στο Δαβίδ (βλ. Β΄ Σαμ 8:12).15 Τότε θ’ αποξηράνει ο Κύριος τον κόλπο της Αιγύπτου και θα υψώσει απειλητικά το χέρι του ενάντια στον ποταμό Ευφράτη· φυσώντας δυνατά θα τον διασπάσει σε εφτά ρυάκια, έτσι που να μπορεί κανείς να τον περάσει φορώντας τα σανδάλια του. 16 Τότε θα ανοιχτεί ένας δρόμος για το υπόλοιπο του λαού του που επέζησε στην Ασσυρία, όπως ο δρόμος που έγινε για τους Ισραηλίτες όταν έφευγαν από την Αίγυπτο.

10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.*11.10 glorious: Heb. glory 11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. 12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.*11.12 corners: Heb. wings 13 The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim. 14 But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.*11.14 them of: Heb. the children of*11.14 they shall lay…: Heb.
