1 Εξαγγελία για τη Μωάβ.

Η Αρ της Μωάβ νικήθηκε, μες σε μια νύχτα καταστράφηκε! Η Κιρ της Μωάβ νικήθηκε, μες σε μια νύχτα καταστράφηκε!*Η Αρ και η Κιρ ήταν δύο κύριες πόλεις της Μωάβ, βόρεια του χειμάρρου Αρνών. Η δεύτερη ονομάζεται επίσης και Κιρ-Χαρεσέθ (κεφ. 16:7) ή Κιρ-Αρές (16:11 και Ιερ 48:31). Πιθανόν αυτή να ήταν και η πρωτεύουσα του βασιλείου.2 Οι κάτοικοι ανεβαίνουν στο ναό της Διβών, στους ιερούς τόπους για να κλάψουν. Η Μωάβ θρηνεί στη Νεβώ και στη Μεδεβά. Όλοι έχουν ξυρισμένα τα κεφάλια τους κι έχουνε τις γενειάδες τους κομμένες. 3 Ρούχα πένθιμα φορούν μέσα στους δρόμους· στις στέγες των σπιτιών και στις πλατείες όλοι θρηνούν, όλοι αναλύονται σε δάκρυα. 4 Κλαίνε γοερά η Εσεβών και η Ελεαλή, ως την Ιασά ακούγονται. Ακόμα κι οι πολεμιστές της Μωάβ θρηνούν. Έχουν κυριευτεί από φόβο.

5 Θρηνεί η καρδιά μου για τη Μωάβ· φτάνουνε οι φυγάδες της ως τη Σηγώρ κι ως την Αγλάθ-Σελισία. Άλλοι ανεβαίνουν τον ανήφορο της Λουείδ με κλάματα. Άλλοι στο δρόμο προς τη Χωροναΐμ για τον ξολοθρεμό κραυγάζουν. 6 Στερεύει το νερό της Νιμρίμ. Το χορτάρι ξεράθηκε, μαράθηκε η χλόη, πράσινο δεν υπάρχει πια. 7 Ό,τι αγαθά τους μείνανε κι ό,τι είχαν διασώσει τα μεταφέρουν πέρα από την κοιλάδα με τις ιτιές. 8 Κραυγές ακούγονται απ’ τα σύνορα της Μωάβ και φτάνει ο θρήνος της ως την Εγλαΐμ και τη Βηρ-Αιλίμ. 9 Τα νερά στη Διβών γεμίσαν αίματα. Μα θα προσθέσω στη Διβών καινούρια συμφορά: Λιοντάρια θα επιτεθούν σ’ όσους κατοίκους της Μωάβ διασώθηκαν, σ’ όσους απόμειναν από τη χώρα.
