1 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Σήκω, Ιερουσαλήμ, ορθώσου και γίνε φως! Γιατί έρχεται το φως σου, απάνω σου η δόξα μου φεγγοβολεί. 2 Τη γη σκοτάδι θα σκεπάσει κι ομίχλη τους λαούς· μα εσένα το δικό μου φως θα σε φωτίζει, θα σε σκεπάζει η δόξα μου. 3 Έθνη θα πάρουνε το δρόμο προς το φως σου, και βασιλιάδες προς τη λάμψη της δικής σου ανατολής.

4 »Φέρε γύρω τα μάτια σου και κοίταξε· όλοι αυτοί έχουν μαζευτεί κι έρχονται προς εσένα. Οι γιοι σου θά ’ρθουν από μακριά και θα κρατούν τις κόρες σου στους ώμους. 5 Τότε θα δεις και θα χαρείς, θα λαχταρά και θα σκιρτά η καρδιά σου· γιατί της θάλασσας ο πλούτος σ’ εσένα θα στραφεί, και των εθνών η δύναμη σ’ εσένα θά ’ρθει.

6 »Καμήλες καραβάνια θα σε σκεπάσουν, νεαρές δρομάδες της Μαδιάμ και της Γεφά. Απ’ τη Σαβά θα έρθουν όλοι οι κάτοικοι με χρυσάφι και λιβάνι και θα διηγούνται τα έργα μου τα θαυμαστά. 7 Τα πρόβατα όλα του Κηδάρ θα μαζευτούν για σένα και τα κριάρια του Νεβαϊώθ για τις θυσίες σου· θυσία ευπρόσδεκτη θ’ ανάβουν στο θυσιαστήριό μου κι εγώ το ναό μου θα τον δοξάσω με την παρουσία μου.

8 »Ποιοι είναι αυτοί, Ιερουσαλήμ, που σαν το σύννεφο πετούν και σαν τα περιστέρια στη φωλιά τους; 9 Ναι, ναι, πλοία συγκεντρώνονται από μακρινούς γιαλούς. Πάνε μπροστά τα πλοία τα μεγάλα και φέρνουν τα παιδιά σου από μακριά, με το ασήμι τους μαζί και το χρυσάφι, για να τιμήσουνε εμένα τον Κύριο το Θεό σου, τον Άγιο Θεό του Ισραήλ. Γιατί εγώ σε δόξασα.

10 »Οι αλλοεθνείς θα ξαναχτίσουνε τα τείχη σου, Ιερουσαλήμ, κι οι βασιλιάδες τους θα σε υπηρετήσουν. Γιατί μες στην οργή μου σε τιμώρησα, αλλά με την αγάπη μου θα σε ελεήσω. 11 Τις πύλες σου θα τις κρατούν πάντα ανοιχτές. Ούτε μέρα θα κλείνουν ούτε νύχτα· για να σου φέρουνε τα πλούτη των εθνών που θα τα οδηγούν οι ίδιοι οι βασιλιάδες τους. 12 Το έθνος και το βασίλειο που δε θα σου δουλέψουν, θα εξολοθρευτούν· αυτά τα έθνη θα καταστραφούν ολότελα.

13 »Τα πεύκα, οι κέδροι και τα κυπαρίσσια, όλη η μεγαλοπρέπεια του όρους του Λιβάνου, σ’ εσένα θα ’ρθουνε, τον τόπο μου τον άγιο να λαμπρύνουν. Τον τόπο θα δοξάσω όπου πατούν τα πόδια μου. 14 Σ’ εσένα θα ’ρθουνε σκυφτά τα παιδιά εκείνων που σε καταπίεζαν· όλοι όσοι σε περιφρονούσαν θα πέσουνε στα πόδια σου και θα σε ονομάζουνε "η Πόλη του Κυρίου, η Σιών του Αγίου Θεού του Ισραήλ".

15 »Εγκαταλείφθηκες, Ιερουσαλήμ, μισήθηκες κι έμεινες έρημη και μόνη. Γι’ αυτό κι εγώ σε κάνω την αιώνια περηφάνια, να ’σαι το καύχημα μέσα σε όλες τις γενιές. 16 Το γάλα θα θηλάσεις των εθνών, τους θησαυρούς θα φας των βασιλιάδων. Θα μάθεις πως σωτήρας σου και λυτρωτής σου εγώ είμαι, ο Κύριος, ο ισχυρός του Ιακώβ.

17 »Χρυσάφι, θα σου φέρω αντί για μπρούτζο, ασήμι αντί για σίδερο, χαλκό αντί για ξύλο κι αντί για πέτρα σίδερο. Και θα εγκαταστήσω διοικητή σου την ειρήνη κι απόλυτο άρχοντα τη δικαιοσύνη. 18 Στη χώρα σου δεν θα ακούει πια κανείς για βία, ούτε μέσα στα όριά σου για ερήμωση και για καταστροφή, αλλά τα τείχη σου θα σε προστατεύουν κι οι πύλες σου θα πληθαίνουν το μεγαλείο σου.

19 »Τον ήλιο πια δε θα τον χρειάζεσαι για φως σου την ημέρα, ούτε τη νύχτα τη σελήνη να σε φωτίζει με τη λάμψη της. Γιατί εγώ ο Κύριος θα ’μαι για σένα φως παντοτινό και θα ’μαι εγώ, ο Θεός σου, το μεγαλείο σου. 20 Ο ήλιος σου δεν θα βασιλέψει πια ούτε θα σβήσει η σελήνη σου, γιατί εγώ ο Κύριος θα ’μαι το φως σου το παντοτινό· οι μέρες του πένθους σου θα τελειώσουν.

21 »Μονάχα δίκαιοι, θ’ αποτελούνε το λαό σου, Ιερουσαλήμ, κι αυτοί για πάντα θα κατέχουνε τη γη· αυτοί, βλαστάρι της φυτείας μου, το δημιούργημά μου, θα φανερώνουνε τη δόξα μου. 22 Η πιο μικρή σου οικογένεια χίλια θα έχει μέλη κι η πιο αδύναμη θα γίνει έθνος ισχυρό. Όταν θα ’ρθεί ο καιρός του, εγώ ο Κύριος θα το κάνω γρήγορα να συμβεί».

1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.*60.1 shine…: or, be enlightened; for thy light cometh 2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. 3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. 4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. 5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.*60.5 abundance…: or, noise of the sea shall be turned toward thee*60.5 forces: or, wealth 6 The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall shew forth the praises of the LORD. 7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory. 8 Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?

9 Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee. 10 And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee. 11 Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.*60.11 forces: or, wealth 12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted. 13 The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary; and I will make the place of my feet glorious. 14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations. 16 Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob. 17 For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness. 18 Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise. 19 The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. 20 Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. 21 Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified. 22 A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time.
