1 «Παρηγορείτε, παρηγορείτε το λαό μου», λέει ο Θεός σας. 2 «Βεβαιώστε την Ιερουσαλήμ και φωνάξτε της ότι τέλειωσε της δουλείας της ο καιρός, ότι η ανομία της συγχωρήθηκε, ότι τιμωρήθηκε από τον Κύριο με το παραπάνω, για όλες τις αμαρτίες της».

3 Ακούστε! Κάποιος φωνάζει: «Ετοιμάστε στην έρημο ένα δρόμο για τον Κύριο, ισιώστε εκεί το δρόμο να περάσει ο Θεός μας. 4 Κάθε φαράγγι ας υψωθεί, κάθε βουνό και κάθε λόφος ας χαμηλώσει· το έδαφος το ανώμαλο ας γίνει πεδιάδα και τα μέρη τ’ απόκρημνα, κοιλάδα. 5 Τότε η δόξα του Κυρίου θα φανερωθεί και θα τη δουν ταυτόχρονα όλοι οι άνθρωποι, γιατί ο Κύριος ο ίδιος μίλησε».

6 Μια φωνή λέει: «Φώναξε!» Κι εγώ ρωτάω: «Τι να φωνάξω;» «Ότι ο κάθε άνθρωπος είναι σαν το χορτάρι», μού απαντά η φωνή, «κι η δόξα του όλη φευγαλέα σαν το αγρολούλουδο. 7 Το χορτάρι ξεραίνεται, μαραίνεται ο ανθός, όταν απάνω του φυσήξει του Κυρίου η πνοή –πραγματικά, χορτάρι είν’ ο λαός. 8 Το χορτάρι ξεραίνεται, μαραίνεται ο ανθός, μα ο λόγος του Θεού μας μένει αιώνια».

9 Ανέβα πάνω σε ψηλό βουνό, Σιών, και διακήρυξε τη χαρμόσυνη αγγελία. Βάλε φωνή με δύναμη, Ιερουσαλήμ, και διακήρυξε τα νέα τα ευχάριστα. Φώναξε, μη φοβάσαι! Στις πόλεις του Ιούδα πες: «Να ο Θεός σας! 10 Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, έρχεται να εξουσιάσει με δύναμη. Φέρνει μαζί του αυτό που κέρδισε.*αυτό που κέρδισε. Ενν. ο λαός του Ισραήλ, τον οποίο λύτρωσε.11 Καθώς βοσκός βοσκάει το κοπάδι του· το συναθροίζει με το χέρι του· βαστάει στο στήθος του τ’ αρνάκια, και τις μανάδες τους προσεκτικά τις οδηγεί».

12 Ποιος τα νερά της θάλασσας μπόρεσε ποτέ με τη χούφτα να μετρήσει, τα ουράνια να υπολογίσει με τη σπιθαμή, να βάλει σε σακί της γης το χώμα, με την πλάστιγγα να ζυγίσει τα βουνά ή με τη ζυγαριά τους λόφους; 13 Ποιος μπορεί να κατανοήσει το Πνεύμα του Κυρίου, και ποιος μπορεί να τον διδάξει ή να του δώσει συμβουλές; 14 Ποιον συμβουλεύτηκε για ν’ αποκτήσει ευθυκρισία; ποιος του ’μαθε ν’ ασκεί τη δικαιοσύνη; ποιος του μετέδωσε τη γνώση και ποιος του δίδαξε να ενεργεί με σύνεση; 15 Τι ’ναι τα έθνη; Σαν μια σταγόνα σ’ έναν κάδο με νερό, σαν κόκκος σκόνης πάνω στην πλάστιγγα. Πόσο ζυγίζουν τα νησιά; Όσο της άμμου ο κόκκος. 16 Όλα τα δέντρα του Λιβάνου δεν αρκούν για τη φωτιά ούτε όλα του τα ζωντανά για τ’ ολοκαύτωμα. 17 Όλα τα έθνη είν’ ένα τίποτα μπροστά του· τα λογαριάζει σαν μηδέν, ωσάν μηδαμινότητα.

18 Με ποιον θέλετε να παρομοιάστε το Θεό; Και ποιο ομοίωμα να πείτε πως του μοιάζει; 19 Το είδωλο το χύνει ο τεχνίτης κι ο χρυσοχόος το επιχρυσώνει και το στολίζει με αλυσίδες αργυρές. 20 Όποιος είναι φτωχός διαλέγει για την προσφορά του ξύλο που δεν το τρώει το σαράκι, κι αναζητάει έναν τεχνίτη ικανόν να του φτιάξει είδωλο που να ’ναι στέρεο.

21 Δεν το μάθατε; Δεν το ακούσατε; Δε σας το είπαν και δεν το καταλάβατε από την αρχή, από τότε που δημιουργήθηκε ο κόσμος; 22 Αυτός είναι που κάθεται ψηλά πάνω απ’ τη γη κι οι κάτοικοί της μοιάζουν σαν ακρίδες· αυτός σαν παραπέτασμα τους ουρανούς τεντώνει και τους ξεδιπλώνει σαν να ’τανε σκηνή για κατοικία. 23 Αυτός τους ηγεμόνες τούς εκμηδενίζει κι εξαφανίζει τους κριτές της γης. 24 Μοιάζουν με νεαρά φυτά που τώρα μόλις σπάρθηκαν, που μόλις ρίζωσαν στη γη. Όταν ο Κύριος πάνω τους φυσήξει θα ξεραθούν, κι ο ανεμοστρόβιλος σαν άχυρο θα τους αρπάξει.

25 «Με ποιον θα με παρομοιάσετε, λοιπόν;» λέει ο Άγιος Θεός, «με ποιον θα ταυτιστώ;» 26 Τα μάτια σας σηκώστε στον ουρανό και δέστε· αυτά τ’ αστέρια ποιος τα δημιούργησε, αν όχι αυτός που σε παράταξη σαν στράτευμα τα βγάζει, κι όλα με τ’ όνομά τους τα καλεί; Η δύναμή του τόσο είναι μεγάλη και τέτοια η ισχύς του, ώστε ποτέ δε λείπει ούτ’ ένα τους.

27 Γιατί, λες Ιακώβ και βεβαιώνεις Ισραήλ, ότι ο Κύριος αγνοεί τις συμφορές σας και πως δε νοιάζεται για να σας αποδώσει το δίκιο σας; 28 Δεν ξέρετε, δε μάθατε; Ο Κύριος είν’ ο αιώνιος Θεός· της γης τα πέρατα δημιούργησε. Ούτε κουράζεται ούτε εξασθενεί, και η σοφία του είναι ανεξερεύνητη. 29 Στους κουρασμένους δίνει δύναμη, στεριώνει τους αδύνατους. 30 Ακόμα και οι νέοι κουράζονται κι εξασθενούν, τα παλικάρια τα γερά σκοντάφτουνε και πέφτουν. 31 Μα εκείνοι που στον Κύριο ελπίζουν, ανανεώνουν τις δυνάμεις τους· φτερά αποκτούνε σαν του αϊτού, τρέχουν χωρίς να εξασθενούν, βαδίζουνε δίχως και ν’ αποσταίνουν.

All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. 8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?

28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.*40.31 renew: Heb. change
