1 Αλίμονο σ’ εσένα πόλη, όπου βρίσκεται το θυσιαστήριο του Θεού,*Αλίμονο... Θεού. Κατά λέξη: «Αλίμονό σου Αριήλ, Αριήλ». Η έννοια του Αριήλ είναι ασαφής. Κατά το Ιεζ 43:15-16 πιθανόν σημαίνει το επάνω μέρος του θυσιαστηρίου όπου έκαιγαν τις θυσίες (τη σχάρα). Εδώ η Ιερουσαλήμ καλείται έτσι ως το κέντρο της λατρείας. πόλη όπου στρατοπέδευσε ο Δαβίδ! Άσε τα χρόνια να κυλούν και γιόρταζε τον κύκλο των εορτών σου. 2 Εγώ θα σου φέρω θλίψη, κι άλλο δε θα ’ναι εκεί παρά θρήνος και στεναγμός. Θα γίνεις πραγματικά εστία φωτιάς του θυσιαστηρίου για μένα. 3 Εγώ ο ίδιος θα στρατοπεδεύσω ολόγυρά σου· θα σε πολιορκήσω με χαρακώματα και θα υψώσω εναντίον σου πύργους πολιορκητικούς. 4 Τότε θα πέσεις τόσο χαμηλά, που η φωνή σου θα μοιάζει να ’ρχεται απ’ τα βάθη της γης, πνιγμένη θα φτάνει μέσα απ’ το χώμα, θ’ ακούγεται σαν τη φωνή φαντάσματος· κι ο λόγος σου σαν ψίθυρος θα βγαίνει μέσα απ’ τη γη.

5 Αλλά σαν σύννεφο σκόνης θα γίνουν τα πλήθη αυτών που σε περικυκλώνουν, σαν άχυρο στον άνεμο οι φοβερές ορδές αυτών που σου επιτίθενται. Κι αυτό θα γίνει ξαφνικά, μέσα σε μια στιγμή. 6 Θα σε επισκεφθώ εγώ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, με βροντή, με σεισμό και ήχο δυνατό, με κυκλώνα, με θύελλα και φλόγα καταστροφικής φωτιάς. 7 Τότε σαν όνειρο, σαν όραμα νυχτερινό, θα διαλυθεί το πλήθος των εθνών που θα βαδίσουν ενάντια στην πόλη όπου βρίσκεται το θυσιαστήριό μου· ναι, το πλήθος όλων εκείνων που θα πολεμήσουν ενάντια σ’ αυτήν και στα οχυρά της, και θα την κυκλώσουν.

8 Ο πεινασμένος ονειρεύεται πως τρώει, αλλά ξυπνάει με άδειο το στομάχι· ο διψασμένος ονειρεύεται πως πίνει, αλλά ξυπνάει εξαντλημένος, με το λαρύγγι του στεγνό. Έτσι θα γίνει με το πλήθος των εθνών που εκστρατεύουν ενάντια στ’ όρος Σιών.

9 Συμπεριφερθείτε σαν ανόητοι και θα γίνετε ανόητοι· συμπεριφερθείτε σαν τυφλοί και θα γίνετε τυφλοί! Είστε μεθυσμένοι, αλλά χωρίς κρασί· τρικλίζετε, αλλά όχι από ποτό μεθυστικό. 10 Γιατί ο Κύριος σας αποκοίμισε· έκλεισε τα μάτια σας, δηλαδή τους Βλέποντες, σκέπασε τα κεφάλια σας, δηλαδή τους Βλέποντες.

11 Όλα τα προφητικά οράματα έγιναν για σας σαν ένα σφραγισμένο βιβλίο, που το δίνουν σ’ έναν που ξέρει ανάγνωση και του λένε: «Διάβασέ το»· κι εκείνος απαντάει: «Δεν μπορώ, γιατί είναι σφραγισμένο». 12 Ή δίνουν το βιβλίο σ’ έναν που δεν ξέρει ανάγνωση και του λένε: «Διάβασέ το»· κι εκείνος απαντάει: «Δεν ξέρω ανάγνωση».

13 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Ο λαός αυτός με το στόμα του με πλησιάζει, και με τα χείλη του με τιμάει, ενώ η καρδιά του βρίσκεται μακριά από μένα· με σέβονται σύμφωνα με ανθρώπινες εντολές που έχουν μάθει. 14 Γι’ αυτό θα συνεχίσω να κάνω στο λαό αυτόν έργα θαυμαστά, ώστε η σοφία των σοφών του να χαθεί και η σύνεση των συνετών του να εξαφανιστεί».

15 Αλίμονο σ’ εκείνους που κρύβουν τα σχέδιά τους από τον Κύριο, που κάνουν τα έργα τους στο σκοτάδι, και λένε: «Ποιος μας βλέπει; ποιος ξέρει τι κάνουμε τώρα;» 16 Τι διαστροφή! Μπορεί να εξισωθεί ο κεραμοποιός με τον πηλό; Μπορεί ένα έργο να πει γι’ αυτόν που το έφτιαξε: «Δεν μ’ έφτιαξε αυτός»; Ή ένα πήλινο δοχείο να πει για τον αγγειοπλάστη του: «Αυτός δεν ξέρει τι κάνει»;

17 Ακόμα λίγο κι ο Λίβανος θα μεταμορφωθεί σε καρποφόρο κήπο, κι ο καρποφόρος κήπος σε δάσος. 18 Τότε θ’ ακούσουν οι κουφοί τα λόγια του βιβλίου, και βγαίνοντας απ’ την ομίχλη και το σκοτάδι τα μάτια των τυφλών θα δουν. 19 Κι όλο και περισσότερο θα χαίρονται οι ταπεινοί κοντά στον Κύριο, οι φτωχοί θα ευφραίνονται για τον Άγιο Θεό του Ισραήλ. 20 Τότε θ’ αφανιστεί ο τύραννος και θα εξολοθρευτεί ο χλευαστής· θα εξοντωθούν όλοι οι κακόβουλοι, 21 αυτοί που με τα λόγια τους φέρνουν την καταδίκη, στην πύλη στήνουνε παγίδα στο δικαστή και με ψευτιές τη δικαίωση του αθώου εμποδίζουν.

22 Για τούτο να τι λέει στους απογόνους του Ιακώβ ο Κύριος, αυτός που λύτρωσε τον Αβραάμ: «Από ’δω κι εμπρός ο λαός του Ιακώβ δεν πρόκειται πια να ντροπιαστεί, ούτε ποτέ να τρομοκρατηθεί· 23 γιατί όταν δουν οι απόγονοι του Ιακώβ τα έργα που εγώ θα κάνω ανάμεσά τους, θα λατρέψουν εμένα. Θα λατρέψουν τον Άγιο Θεό του Ιακώβ, θα φοβηθούν το Θεό του Ισραήλ. 24 Εκείνοι που το πνεύμα τους πλανήθηκε, θα μάθουν σύνεση· κι εκείνοι που αντιλέγουν θα δεχτούν τη διδαχή».

1 Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices.*29.1 Woe…: or, O Ariel, that is, the lion of God*29.1 the city: or, of the city*29.1 kill: Heb. cut off the heads of 2 Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel. 3 And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee. 4 And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.*29.4 whisper: Heb. peep, or, chirp 5 Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly. 6 Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision. 8 It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

9 Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.*29.9 cry ye…: or, take your pleasure, and riot 10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.*29.10 rulers: Heb. heads 11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:*29.11 book: or, letter 12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: 14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.*29.14 proceed: Heb. add 15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? 16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

17 Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?

18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. 19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.*29.19 increase: Heb. add 20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off: 21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. 22 Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale. 23 But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. 24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.*29.24 come…: Heb. know understanding
