Ο Κύριος λέει:

1 «Κατέβα και στο χώμα πέσε,

όμορφη Βαβυλώνα.

Κάτσε στη γη χωρίς θρονί,

όμορφη χώρα των Χαλδαίων·

δε θα σε ονομάζουν πια γλυκιά και τρυφηλή.

2 Πάρε το μύλο κι άλεθε αλεύρι,

βγάλε το πέπλο σου,

τα πόδια γύμνωσε,

σήκωσε το φόρεμά σου,

για να περάσεις τους ποταμούς,

3 και θ’ αποκαλυφθεί η γυμνότητά σου

και θα ταπεινωθείς.

Θα πάρω εγώ εκδίκηση,

κανείς δε θα με σταματήσει».

4 Αυτά λέει ο λυτρωτής μας,

που τ’ όνομά του είναι ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος,

ο Άγιος Θεός του Ισραήλ.

5 «Πέσε στη σιωπή», λέει ο Κύριος,

«κι έμπα μες στο σκοτάδι,

όμορφη χώρα των Χαλδαίων·

δε θα μπορείς πια να ονομάζεσαι

κυρίαρχη των βασιλείων.

6 Οργίστηκα ενάντια στο λαό μου,

ατίμασα τη χώρα μου,

στην εξουσία σου τους παρέδωσα,

μα εσύ έλεος δεν τους έδειξες·

ακόμα και στους γέροντες αβάσταχτον έκανες το ζυγό σου.

7 Είπες: "θα είμαι αιώνια κυρίαρχη".

Δε σκέφτηκες βαθιά το νόημα των γεγονότων,

ούτε στοχάστηκες το τέλος τους.

8 »Τώρα, λοιπόν, άκουσε τούτο, τρυφηλή,

που κάθεσαι με ασφάλεια και σκέφτεσαι

πως μόνο εσύ υπάρχεις κι άλλος κανείς,

πως χήρα εσύ ποτέ σου δε θα μείνεις,

ούτε θα δεις να σου πεθαίνουν τα παιδιά:

9 Μέσα σε μια στιγμή, σε μια μονάχα μέρα,

δύο κακά μαζί θα σου συμβούν:

χηρεία κι ατεκνία θα πέσουν πάνω σου τελειωτικά

και δε θα σ’ ωφελήσουν οι μαγείες σου οι πολλές

και τ’ άφθονά σου ξόρκια.

10 Μα εσύ βασίστηκες στην πονηριά σου και είπες:

"κανένας δεν με βλέπει".

»Η γνώση κι η σοφία σου σε παραπλάνησαν

και σκέφτηκες πως είσ’ εσύ

και δεν υπάρχει άλλος κανείς εκτός από σένα.

11 Θα σου συμβεί κακό,

που δε θα ξέρεις πώς να το ξορκίσεις·

πάνω σου θα ’ρθει συμφορά

που να την αποφύγεις δε θα μπορείς·

καταστροφή θα πέσει ξάφνου πάνω σου,

που δε θα την έχεις προβλέψει.

12 Κάθισε τώρα με τα ξόρκια και τις πολλές μαγείες σου,

που σ’ έχουν απ’ τα νιάτα σου κουράσει.

Ίσως μπορέσεις απ’ αυτά να ωφεληθείς,

τη συμφορά ίσως μπορέσεις να την αποδιώξεις.

13 »Απ’ τους πολλούς σου συμβουλάτορες κουράστηκες.

Ας σηκωθούνε τώρα να σε σώσουν

οι ουρανοσκόποι κι οι αστρολόγοι,

που σου αναγγέλλουν κάθε μήνα

τι πρόκειται να σου συμβεί.

14 Θα γίνουν σαν το άχυρο κι η φωτιά θα τους κάψει·

δε θα μπορέσουν να σωθούν

από της φλόγας την ορμή.

Γιατί δε θα ’ναι ανθρακιά να ζεσταθούν,

δε θα ’ναι αναμμένα κάρβουνα να κάτσουν αντικρύ τους.

15 »Έτσι θα καταντήσουνε οι μάγοι σου

που από τα νιάτα σου σ’ απομυζούνε.

Θα πάρουνε το δρόμο τους και θα περιπλανιούνται,

κι ούτε ένας να σε σώσει δεν θα μπορεί».

1 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. 2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. 3 Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man. 4 As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel. 5 Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

6 I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

7 And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it. 8 Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children: 9 But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.*47.10 perverted…: or, caused thee to turn away

11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.*47.11 from…: Heb. the morning thereof*47.11 put: Heb. expiate 12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. 13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels.
