1 Εκείνη την εποχή ο βασιλιάς Εζεκίας αρρώστησε βαριά, να πεθάνει. Τότε τον επισκέφθηκε ο προφήτης Ησαΐας, γιος του Αμώς, και του είπε: «Άκου τι λέει ο Κύριος: Τακτοποίησε τις υποθέσεις του σπιτιού σου, γιατί δε θα ζήσεις για πολύ ακόμη. Θα πεθάνεις».

2 Ο Εζεκίας γύρισε τότε το πρόσωπο στον τοίχο και προσευχήθηκε στον Κύριο. 3 «Κύριε», είπε, «θυμήσου, σε παρακαλώ, πώς έζησα ενώπιόν σου με πιστότητα και με ευθύτητα καρδιάς, κι έπραξα ό,τι σου ήταν αρεστό!» Κι άρχισε να κλαίει γοερά.

4 Τότε ήρθε στον Ησαΐα λόγος του Κυρίου: 5 «Γύρνα πίσω», του είπε ο Κύριος, «και πες στον Εζεκία: "ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Δαβίδ, του προγόνου σου, λέει: Άκουσα την προσευχή σου και είδα τα δάκρυά σου. Θα προσθέσω, λοιπόν, στη ζωή σου δεκαπέντε χρόνια· 6 θα υπερασπιστώ αυτή την πόλη και θα σας ελευθερώσω εσένα και την πόλη από το βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας. 7 Και για να ’σαι βέβαιος ότι εγώ, ο Κύριος, θα εκπληρώσω την υπόσχεσή μου, θα σου δώσω ένα σημείο: 8 Στη σκάλα του Άχαζ,*Ο Άχαζ ήταν πατέρας του Εζεκία. Για το ηλιακό ρολόι του Άχαζ βλ. υποσ. εις Β΄ Βασ 20:9. όπου η σκιά έχει κατέβει δέκα σκαλοπάτια, θα την κάνω να γυρίσει πίσω"». Και πραγματικά η σκιά οπισθοχώρησε κι ο ήλιος ξαναφώτισε τα δέκα σκαλοπάτια όπου είχε κατεβεί η σκιά.

9 Ποίημα που έγραψε ο Εζεκίας, βασιλιάς του Ιούδα, όταν ανέρρωσε από την αρρώστια του:

10 Σκεφτόμουνα πως στης ζωής μου τα μισά

θα ’φευγα για τις πύλες του άδη·

και θα ’χανα τα χρόνια μου τα υπόλοιπα.

11 Σκεφτόμουνα πως ποτέ πια

δε θα ’βλεπα τον Κύριο στων ζωντανών τη χώρα

ούτε κανέναν άνθρωπο απ’ όσους σ’ αυτό τον κόσμο κατοικούν.

12 Κόπηκε απ’ το στήριγμά της η ζωή μου

μακριά μου έφυγε καθώς σκηνή βοσκού·

ειν’ η ζωή μου σαν το υφαντό

που στου αργαλειού τυλίχτηκε τον κύλινδρο

κι ο υφαντής τού κόβει τα στημόνια.

Απ’ το πρωί ως το δειλινό

θα μ’ έχεις πια αποτελειώσει, Κύριε.

13 Το πρωί ένιωθα πως είχα τσακιστεί.

Σάμπως λιοντάρι ο Κύριος συντρίβει τα οστά μου·

απ’ το πρωί ως το δειλινό

νιώθω το τέλος μου να πλησιάζει.

14 Κραυγές αφήνω πόνου σαν το χελιδόνι,

και σαν το περιστέρι στεναγμούς·

τα μάτια μου κουράστηκαν

στον ουρανό να βλέπω.

Κύριε, βρίσκομαι σε απόγνωση· γίνε μου εσύ βοηθός.

15 Τι να πω εγώ;

Εκείνος το ’πε και το εκτέλεσε·

σ’ όλη μου τη ζωή θα ζω

με πίκρα στην ψυχή μου.

16 Για σένα, Κύριε, θα ζήσει η καρδιά μου

και θα ζωογονηθεί το πνεύμα μου·

θεράπευσέ με,

φέρε με πάλι στη ζωή.

17 Η πίκρα μου θα γίνει ευτυχία.

Εσύ λύτρωσες τη ζωή μου από το λάκκο της καταστροφής,

γιατί έριξες πίσω σου όλες τις αμαρτίες μου.

18 Ο άδης δεν θα σε υμνήσει,

ούτε θα σε δοξολογήσουν οι νεκροί·

εκείνοι που στον τάφο κατεβαίνουν

δεν μπορούν να ελπίζουν στην πιστότητά σου πια.

19 Οι ζωντανοί, μονάχα αυτοί θα σε υμνούν,

όπως σήμερα εγώ·

κι όπως οι πατεράδες που θα λένε στα παιδιά τους

για τη δική σου την πιστότητα.

20 Κύριε, μ’ έσωσες!

Με μουσικά όργανα θα σε υμνούμε

όλες τις μέρες της ζωής μας μέσα στον οίκο σου.

21 Μετά ο Ησαΐας είπε να ετοιμάσουν ένα κατάπλασμα από σύκα και να το βάλουν πάνω στην πληγή για να γιατρευτεί ο βασιλιάς. 22 Ο Εζεκίας ρώτησε τον Ησαΐα: «Ποιο είναι το σημείο ότι θα μπορέσω πάλι ν’ ανέβω στο ναό του Κυρίου;»*Η σωστή θέση των στ. 21-22 είναι μετά το στ. 6 του παρόντος κεφαλαίου (πρβλ. Β΄ Βασ 20:6-11). Ένα αξιόλογο εβρ. χειρ. του Ησαΐα από το Κουμράν παραλείπει τελείως αυτούς τους δύο στίχους.

1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.*38.1 Set…: Heb.
