1 Θαρρείτε πως το χέρι του Κυρίου δεν φτάνει να σας σώσει, και πως το αυτί του δεν μπορεί να σας ακούσει; 2 Λάθος! Οι αμαρτίες σας, όμως, υψώνουν τείχος ανάμεσα σ’ εσάς και στο Θεό σας κι οι ανομίες σας τον έκρυψαν μακριά σας, τόσο που να μη σας ακούει. 3 Τα χέρια σας έχουνε μ’ αίμα λερωθεί και με την ανομία τα δάχτυλά σας· ψέματα λέν’ τα χείλη σας, και αδικίες η γλώσσα σας.

4 Προσφεύγετε στα δικαστήρια χωρίς να ’χετε δίκιο, μ’ άνομα μέσα υποστηρίζετε την υπόθεσή σας. Καθένας σας στηρίζεται σε πράγματα ανυπόστατα, λέει ψέματα, κυριαρχείστε από την κακία και καταλήγετε στην ανομία. 5 Κλωσάτε αυγά οχιάς και νήμα υφαίνετε αράχνης. Όποιος φάει από τ’ αυγά σας θα πεθάνει· σπάει το αυγό και βγαίνει οχιά. 6 Τα νήματά σας δεν είναι κατάλληλα για υφάσματα, ούτε μπορεί κανένας να ντυθεί με τα υφαντά σας. Τα έργα σας είναι παράνομα, σε κάθε βήμα σας μεταχειρίζεστε τη βία. 7 Τρέχουν τα πόδια σας για το κακό, σπεύδετε όταν είναι να σκοτώσετε αθώο. Οι σκέψεις σας είναι αμαρτωλές· συντρίμμια και καταστροφή αφήνετε στο διάβα σας. 8 Δεν ξέρετε ειρήνη τι θα πει, στα έργα σας δικαιοσύνη δεν υπάρχει. Τον τρόπο της ζωής σας εσείς τον διαστρεβλώσατε κι αυτοί που τον ακολουθούν δε βρίσκουν τη γαλήνη.

9 Για τούτο είν’ ο Κύριος μακριά μας, και η εκπλήρωση των υποσχέσεών του αργεί. Προσμένουμε το φως μα να, παντού σκοτάδι· προσμένουμε διαύγεια κι όμως βαδίζουμε στα σκοτεινά. 10 Τον τοίχο ψηλαφούμε σαν τυφλοί, ωσάν αόμματοι. Καταμεσήμερο σκοντάφτουμε όπως τη νύχτα. Μες στα σκοτάδια*σκοτάδια. Η έννοια της αντίστοιχης εβρ. λ. είναι άγνωστη. ζούμε σαν νεκροί. 11 Ουρλιάζουμε όλοι μας σαν τις αρκούδες, βογγούμε σαν τα περιστέρια. Προσμένουμε την κρίση μα δεν έρχεται· τη σωτηρία αλλά αυτή είναι μακριά.

12 Είναι μπροστά σου, Κύριε, οι αμαρτίες μας πολλές! Μάρτυρες κατηγορίας εναντίον μας είναι οι ανομίες μας. Οι παραβάσεις μας πάντοτε μας συντροφεύουν και τις γνωρίζουμε τις ανομίες μας καλά. 13 Σ’ εσένα απιστήσαμε και σ’ αρνηθήκαμε, φύγαμε μακριά από το Θεό μας. Φερθήκαμε άδικα κι επαναστατικά, με υποκρισία στις σκέψεις και στα λόγια μας. 14 Παραμερίστηκε η ορθή η κρίση κι έγινε απρόσιτη η δικαιοσύνη· η τιμιότητα στις αγορές παραβιάζεται κι ευθύτητα δεν υπάρχει πουθενά. 15 Έτσι η αλήθεια χάνεται, κι όποιος παύει να κάνει το κακό ληστεύεται.

Ο Κύριος το είδε και δυσαρεστήθηκε που δεν υπάρχει δίκαιη κρίση πια. 16 Είδε πως δεν ήταν κανείς να βοηθήσει τον κατατρεγμένο κι απόρησε· γι’ αυτό με τη δική του δύναμη τον βοήθησε, κι επέβαλε το δίκαιο θέλημά του. 17 Φόρεσε θώρακα τη δικαιοσύνη, την περικεφαλαία της σωτηρίας στο κεφάλι του, ιμάτιο τα ρούχα της εκδίκησης και για μανδύα την οργή τυλίχτηκε. 18 Σύμφωνα με τα έργα τους, οργή στους αντιπάλους του θα αποδώσει, τιμωρία στους εχθρούς του. Θα τιμωρήσει και τους πιο απομακρυσμένους λαούς. 19 Θα φοβηθούν τον Κύριο και τη δοξασμένη παρουσία του σ’ όλες τις χώρες, απ’ την ανατολή ως τη δύση. Γιατί θα ’ρθεί σαν ποταμός ορμητικός, σπρωγμένος απ’ τη θύελλα. 20 Λυτρωτής θα έρθει στη Σιών, για κείνους απ’ τους απογόνους του Ιακώβ που θα επιστρέψουν απ’ την αμαρτία.

21 «Ως προς εμένα», λέει ο Κύριος, «κάνω μ’ αυτούς διαθήκη: Το Πνεύμα μου θ’ αναπαυθεί απάνω σας. Σας εμπιστεύομαι το μήνυμά μου από τώρα και για πάντα. Και ποτέ δε θ’ αποσύρω την αποστολή αυτή ούτ’ από σας ούτ’ από τα παιδιά σας ούτ’ από τα εγγόνια σας. Εγώ ο Κύριος το λέω».

1 Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.*59.2 have hid: or, have made him hide 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. 4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. 5 They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.*59.5 cockatrice’: or, adder’s*59.5 crushed…: or, sprinkled is as if there brake out a viper 6 Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. 7 Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.*59.7 destruction: Heb. breaking 8 The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.*59.8 judgment: or, right

9 Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness. 10 We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men. 11 We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us. 12 For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them; 13 In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. 14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. 15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.*59.15 maketh…: or, is accounted mad*59.15 it displeased…: Heb. it was evil in his eyes

16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. 17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. 18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.*59.18 deeds: Heb. recompences 19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.*59.19 lift…: or, put him to flight

20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. 21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
