1 Τον καιρό που βασιλιάς του Ιούδα ήταν ο Άχαζ, γιος του Ιωθάμ κι εγγονός του Ουζζία, βγήκαν ο Ρεσίν, βασιλιάς της Συρίας και ο Φεκάχ, γιος του Ρεμαλία και βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ, για να πολεμήσουν κατά της Ιερουσαλήμ, αλλά δεν μπόρεσαν να την κυριέψουν.

2 Όταν έφεραν το μήνυμα στο βασιλιά του Ιούδα ότι οι Σύριοι συμμάχησαν με τη φυλή Εφραΐμ,*Εφραΐμ. Η φυλή αυτή πολύ συχνά στην Π.Δ. αντιπροσωπεύει το βόρειο βασίλειο του Ισραήλ. αυτός και ο λαός του ταράχτηκαν, όπως ταρακουνιούνται τα δέντρα στο δάσος από τον άνεμο. 3 Τότε είπε ο Κύριος στον Ησαΐα: «Σήκω και πήγαινε να βρεις το βασιλιά Άχαζ, εσύ και ο γιος σου ο Σεάρ-Ιασούβ,*Σεάρ-Ιασούβ. Στα εβρ. σημαίνει: «το υπόλοιπο θα επιστρέψει». στην άκρη του υδραγωγού τής πάνω δεξαμενής, στο δρόμο του αγρού του Λευκαντή. 4 Πες του: "πρόσεξε! Μείνε ήσυχος· μη φοβηθείς, μη δειλιάσεις από τους δυο αυτούς δαυλούς που καπνίζουν, δηλαδή από την άγρια οργή του Ρεσίν και την οργή του γιου του Ρεμαλία. 5 Βέβαια, οι Σύριοι σκέφτηκαν μαζί με τους Εφραϊμίτες και το γιο του Ρεμαλία να σου κάνουν κακό. Είπαν: 6 Πάμε να εκστρατεύσουμε εναντίον του Ιούδα και να τον τρομοκρατήσουμε· αυτός θ’ αναγκαστεί να ενωθεί μαζί μας και τότε εμείς θα του επιβάλουμε για βασιλιά το γιο του Ταβεήλ. 7 Άκου όμως τι λέει ο Κύριος ο Θεός: Αυτό δεν θα πετύχει, δε θα συμβεί καν! 8 Πρωτεύουσα της Συρίας είναι η Δαμασκός και ηγέτης της Δαμασκού ο Ρεσίν. Και τι είναι το βασίλειο του Εφραΐμ; Μετά από εξήντα πέντε χρόνια θα έχει συντριβεί και ο λαός του δεν θα υπάρχει πια. 9 Πρωτεύουσα του Εφραΐμ είναι η Σαμάρεια και ηγέτης της Σαμάρειας ο γιος του Ρεμαλία. Αλλά αν εσείς δεν μείνετε στην πίστη σταθεροί, δε θα στεριώσετε ούτε στη ζωή"». *Το κείμενο είναι ασαφές: Πιθανότατα ο προφήτης διακηρύσσει την υπεροχή της Ιερουσαλήμ, που πραγματικός της ηγέτης είναι ο Θεός, απέναντι στους εχθρούς της, οι οποίοι έχουν ως ηγέτες αδύναμους ανθρώπους.

10 Ο Κύριος έστειλε με τον Ησαΐα κι άλλο μήνυμα στον Άχαζ: 11 «Ζήτησε ένα σημείο από τον Κύριο το Θεό σου, είτε από κάτω, από τον κόσμο των νεκρών είτε από πάνω, από τον ουρανό».

12 Ο Άχαζ όμως απάντησε: «Όχι· δε θα ζητήσω τίποτε, για να μην προκαλέσω τον Κύριο».

13 Τότε ο Ησαΐας είπε: «Ακούστε, λοιπόν, εσύ κι η οικογένειά σου, οι απόγονοι του Δαβίδ: Δε σας φτάνει που εξαντλείτε την υπομονή των ανθρώπων, θέλετε ακόμα να εξαντλήσετε και την υπομονή του Θεού μου; 14 Γι’ αυτό ο ίδιος ο Κύριος θα σας δώσει ένα σημείο: η παρθένος*η παρθένος. Έτσι μεταφράζουν οι Ο΄ την εβρ. λ. «αλμά», η οποία στην κυριολεξία σημαίνει «νεαρή κόρη». θα συλλάβει και θα γεννήσει γιο, ο οποίος θα ονομαστεί "Εμμανουήλ" (Ο Θεός μαζί μας). 15 Θα τρώει ανθόγαλο και μέλι ωσότου μάθει να απορρίπτει το κακό και να επιλέγει το αγαθό. 16 Γιατί, πριν μάθει ακόμα το παιδί ν’ απορρίπτει το κακό και να επιλέγει το αγαθό, η χώρα των δυο βασιλιάδων που εσύ τους τρέμεις, θα ερημωθεί. 17 Αλλά ο Κύριος θα φέρει σ’ εσένα και στο λαό σου και στους απογόνους του πατέρα σου, μέρες δυστυχίας τέτοιες, που δε φανήκαν από τότε που αποχωρίστηκε ο Ισραήλ απ’ τον Ιούδα. Αυτό θα γίνει με το βασιλιά των Ασσυρίων».

18 Έρχεται μέρα που ο Κύριος θα σφυρίξει στους εχθρούς· κι αμέσως θα ’ρθουνε από τις εκβολές των ποταμών της Αιγύπτου, σαν σύννεφο από μύγες κι από την Ασσυρία σαν σμήνος από σφήκες. 19 Θα έρθουν όλοι να εγκατασταθούν στ’ απόκρημνα φαράγγια και στις σχισμές των βράχων, σ’ όλους τους βάτους και σ’ όλους τους σταθμούς νερού. 20 Την ημέρα εκείνη ο Κύριος θα πληρώσει το βασιλιά της Ασσυρίας εκεί, πέρα απ’ τον Ευφράτη ποταμό, και θα τον μεταχειριστεί σαν ξυράφι για να ξυρίσει το κεφάλι σας και τις τρίχες απ’ όλο το σώμα σας, δίχως να λησμονήσει τη γενειάδα.*Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 3:17.

21 Τότε καθένας σας θα τρέφει μία δάμαλη και δυο κατσίκες· 22 και τόσο πολύ γάλα θα του δίνουν, που θα μπορεί να τρώει ανθόγαλο. Γιατί όσοι απομείνουνε στη χώρα, με ανθόγαλο και μέλι θα τρέφονται.

23 Τότε ακόμη, κάθε τόπος με χίλιες ρίζες κλήματα, αξίας χίλιων ασημένιων σίκλων, θα γεμίσει αγκάθια και τριβόλια. 24 Μόνο με βέλη και με τόξα θα μπαίνει εκεί ο άνθρωπος, γιατί η χώρα ολόκληρη θα είναι γεμάτη αγκάθια και τριβόλια. 25 Και σ’ όλες τις βουνοπλαγιές που καλλιεργούνται με ξινάρι, κανείς δεν θα πηγαίνει πια, γιατί γεμάτος θα ’ναι ο τόπος με αγκάθια και τριβόλια. Εκεί θα στέλνουν βόδια και πρόβατα να βόσκουν.

1 And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it. 2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.*7.2 is confederate…: Heb. resteth on 3 Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field;*7.3 Shear-jashub: that is, The remnant shall return*7.3 highway: or, causeway 4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.*7.4 neither…: Heb. let not thy heart be tender 5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying, 6 Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:*7.6 vex: or, waken 7 Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. 8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people.*7.8 that…: Heb. from a people 9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.*7.9 If…: or, Do ye not believe? it is because ye are not stable

10 Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying,*7.10 Moreover…: Heb. And the LORD added to speak 11 Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.*7.11 ask it…: or, make thy petition deep 12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. 13 And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.*7.14 shall call: or, thou, O virgin, shalt call 15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. 16 For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.

17 The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria. 18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19 And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.*7.19 bushes: or, commendable trees 20 In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard. 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep; 22 And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.*7.22 the land: Heb. the midst of the land 23 And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns. 24 With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns. 25 And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.
